The Sorting

-Jack Frost POV-

I continued to teach the other guardians more and more about the Wizarding world as the beginning of the term drew near. I also began to be more and more comfortable wearing my school dress around them. I usually would only wear male fit if someone were coming to view the classroom and Wizard robes when I was required. Glad to be back in the pattern.

September first, and I was ready to go all out for them.

I wore the Kimono Madam Malkin made me with my knee high socks and Japanese flats. I also let myself show them me wearing my favorite hair clips. Blue wire with sparkly snowflake decorations.

I always loved the female fit, even if that with my hair clipped back made me look like a girl. I can't describe it, but it feels right somehow.

And just so the badger won't confuse anyone, I'm the head of Hufflepuff. Dumbledore and the other staff wanted me to be a head of house and Hufflepuff was open, so I took the role. It didn't add much difference other than where I sat at the staff table and an occasional run to their common room for emergency announcements. No one knows what house I would be in. I never wore the sorting hat.

Ready for the day, I flew to the Pole to greet everyone. Sandy, North, and Tooth said they liked the outfit, while Bunny just stared with wide eyes. "You okay Cottontail?" I asked and he shook out of whatever trance he was in.

"Ya look great, Mate," He said with a smile. I blushed and we used the globe to get to Hogwarts for a Staff Meeting before the students arrived. I was mainly about introducing new staff, subjects everyone teaches, and where we sit at the Staff table.

The Guardians couldn't sit with me because of my position and the fact they'll be gone most of the time, but they were fine with it after a little reasoning from yours truly.

We sat at our spots as students filed in, second year and up. I caught up with the people next to me and I could tell the other Guardians were only talking to each other. Only time could tell if they would warm up to the people surrounding them.

Deputy Headmistress McGonagall walked the main doors which meant the sorting would start soon. I told the Guardians all I could, but there was still no telling exactly where the sorting would take us.

She came out of the back door with the Sorting hat and placed it on a stool, list containing the names of all the new students in the other hand.

The crowd hushed and the large main double doors opened, a cluster of eleven year olds came in, marvelling at the Great Halls magical beauty.

They stopped at the front and we began to wait. Then the Sorting Hat began to sing.

"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry,
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuffl
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"

The hall erupted with applause as the Sorting hat went still.

Professor McGonagall spoke out, shushing the crowd, "When I say your name, you will come and wear the Sorting Hat. Once sorted, you will sit at your respective table. Abbott, Hannah!"

A pink-faced girl with blonde pigtails stumbled out of the crowd and went up to the stool before putting on the hat. It fell right down over her eyes, and she sat down. A moment's pause ...

"HUFFLEPUFF!" shouted the hat.

A table beside the group on my left cheered and clapped as Hannah went to sit down. I clapped with a smile since someone went into the house I represented.

"Bennett, Jamie!"

I leaned forward slightly as he went up, slightly nervous, but bravely put it on before sitting on the stool. It took a little longer, then shouted, "GRYFFINDOR!"

The table next to the wall on my right began to cheer. He looked at me and smiled. I smiled back, giving him a thumbs up.

"Bones, Susan!"

"HUFFLEPUFF!" The hat shouted again so Susan went to sit next to Hannah.

"Boot, Terry!"

"RAVENCLAW!"

The table on the other side of the group cheered, Terry going to sit with them.

It commenced like a normal sorting. Some more excited than others, some wearing the hat for longer. One boy named, Draco Malfoy, only had the hat touch his head for a meer split second before it shouted, "SLYTHERIN!" It's rare that someone fits so well that the sorting hat needs no time to decide.

More were called till Professor McGonagall said, "Potter Harry!"

Whispers broke out in the room at the name. Harry came up and put the hat on, hesitant. He seemed to decide not to sit down as we waited. Took about a minute, but eventually yelled, "GRYFFINDOR!"

The Gryffindor table exploded with cheers and I even heard the Weasley twins chanting, "We got Potter! We got Potter!" I laughed at their excitement and we continued.

Eventually, the sorting was completed and Minerva put the hat away.

Albus Dumbledore stood to his feet, beaming at the students, his arms open wide.

"Welcome!" he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you!"

As he sat back down, applause filled the room and food appears in the boals along the table. Many people dug in while the first years and Older Guardians looked at it surprised before taking their portions.

I smiled at the sight as I ate and chatted with the people beside me. I hope this will all work out.

Once the feast ended and the students began to go to their dorms, I motioned for the Guardians to meet me in the back room. Once we were all there, I clapped my hands together.

"Okay, here's the plan, I want all of you to watch a bunch of my classes so you can see how I do it before you teach for the first time. I'm not saying that I don't trust you, but lets just say I've seen you around kids."

"Fair," North shrugged, "Get used to the kids before we teach them."

I nodded, "Great. Let me know when you're coming. I want you all to watch at least three separate days before teaching for the first time."

"Why is the one we're doing a once a week after school program?" Bunny asked.

I sighed, "Two reasons, one, so that the younger years will have an opportunity to be there. Second, they need to have all the classes they take be for the benefit of graduating. This doesn't really do that since there's no credit attached."

Bunny chuckled, "And what does yours do?"

I rolled my eyes, "Culture and Magical History. One credit for each. For culture, you can choose Dragon Studies, Muggle Studies, or Gothic literature. Magical History can be done with History of Magic, obviously, Care of Magical Creatures, and Fashion History."

Sandy did a picture of a Capital H, and arrow, and the number one.

"First years take History of Magic. You need to have a class with a history credit in it every year. You can keep going with History of Magic, or transfer to another one." I laughed, "I don't know why anyone would. Profesor Bins makes his class so boring, an hour of reading would be more productive."

We shared a laugh.

"Anyway," I said once we stopped. "You guys better get back to your places. See you in class."

With that, I went up to the teachers dorms.
