Students First Day
-Harry Potter-
It was lunch hour and I was already exhausted. This place is way too hard to figure out how to navigate. Thank goodness Hagrid is willing to help everyone find classes.
I was talking with my new friend Ron and our roommate Jamie when I heard a familiar voice behind me. "Hey Jamie, Harry."
Me and Ron turned while Jamie looked up and smiled, "Hey Professor Frost!"
Professor Frost sent him a smile, "Glad to see someone's enjoying themselves," he said before turning to Ron "Ron Weasley. Right?"
He swallowed his mouthful of food before saying, "That's me."
He gave him a warm smile before saying, "Mind talking with me after the final classes? Just meet me by the main entrance of Hogwarts."
Ron seemed startled, but nodded. Frost patted his back before taking his seat at the Staff table.
Ron shivered, "Bloody Hell. His hands are freezing!"
Jamie laughed, "Well he is Jack Frost after all."
I just shook my head, "He has a chilly last name. So what?"
Jamie just shook his head, "No, really. He's the real Jack Frost." We gave him blank looks. His face fell, "Bringer of Winter?" We stayed silent. "Come on guys."
"I knew he's over 300 years old," I put in, hoping to improve the situation.
Jamie sighed, "Look, that guy is the reason we have winter and snow days. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't be able to make a snowman."
"That's okay, I hate the cold," Ron said before stuffing more food in his mouth.
Jamie groaned, "Why did I even try? Anyway, he's a great guy. I'm sure you'll like him once you meet him."
Ron froze. "Blimey, you're right. I need to meet with the guy!"
"It's okay Ron," I told him holding my last spoon of mixed veggies. "I trust him. If he wants to talk with you, I'm sure there's a good reason."
He shook his head, suddenly scared. He looked at me, "Could you come with me at least watch at a safe distance?"
I sighed, "Sure. At a distance."
The teachers began to return to their classrooms, telling us to finish up. I saw the Hermione girl walk out with them but shook it off. Probably needed to stop at the dorm. There is no way anyone will want to be that early.
It was after the last class so we went to the front of the school where Professor Frost was waiting. He twirled his staff in one hand and heald a book in the other.
I looked at Ron and he took a deep breath before walking over. Once Professor Frost saw him, he smiled and met him halfway, leading him to the wall near them as to not interrupt walking students.
They talked for quite some time and I almost saw genuine concern in Frost's eyes. I was confused. What was happening?
Professor Frost eventually gave Ron the blue book with green stitching and told him more things. Ron tried to give it back, but Frost closed Ron's fingers around the books with a few more words.
With that, Professor Frost tossed his Staff up slightly, caught it, then walked further inside. Towards me.
When he passed, he just made eye contact, said, "Hey Harry," and walked off.
But before he could get too far, he said, "Oh. While I'm thinking about it, come to talk some time. Whenever you feel like it this next week." With that said, he walked off.
Ron came up to me, "What'd he say to you?"
"To go talk to him whenever I feel like it in the next week. What about you? What's the book for?"
He just hugged it tight. "I'd rather not say."
That night, I saw him looking at the book on his night stand, warily. As if it's existence confused him. I put it in the back of my mind, but planned to ask Professor Frost when I could.
When Ron stared at the book for a solid half hour the next night, I decided to talk to Professor Frost the next day. So after school, I asked where his classroom was, and found it with surprising ease.
When I walked in, I found him talking to who looked like a fifth year girl. She was acting all nervous and blushing while Frost seemed to be real respectful and maybe a touch of nervous.
I cleared my throat, catching both their attention. The girl just smiled at Professor Frost before leaving the room. Once the door closed, Professor Frost stood, "How are you, Harry?"
I shrugged, "I'm good. Why did you want to talk with me?"
"Just wanted to chat. I do need to watch after children as a guardian. Are the stares calming down?”
I shook my head, "Some are doubling around just to pass me again while staring. And I'm still getting lost between every class."
Jack chuckled, "It's the third day. It took me a few months to make a mental map of Hogwarts when I started teaching. Just worry about the path between classes for now and don't rely on the people or objects in paintings nor suits of armor. They move around all the time." The door opened, but Professor Frost ignored it. "One thing you can use is the shape of the picture frames. Those tend to stay consistent unless one is moved over the Summer, and you should have everything mostly down by then."
"Professor," we turned and saw Percy walking over to us. "I felt inclined to ask, why did you give a blank book to Ron?"
Professor Frost smirked, "Inclined? Did you read a dictionary over the summer since receiving news about becoming a Prefect?"
Percy blushed, "I hardly find that relevant to my question," he said with gritted teeth.
Frost rolled his eyes, "That's between me and him isn't it? If you want to know, you'll either need to ask him or Charlie."
"I'm a prefect, and he's my brother," Percy said back.
"And as a prefect, you can exercise the responsibility to ask him. As his brother, I would hope you'd respect his choice if he decides to not tell," Frost told him without missing a beat. He walked closer so that they were less than a meter apart. "You know, just because you're physically older and a couple inches taller, I'm still your professor. Plus, I can make it so you will need to cuddle closer to those blankets every night."
Is it just me, or did it get colder as he spoke? Percy shivered and gis ears turned pink, "You aren't a Hufflepuff, are you?"
Frost just shrugged, "Never wore the hat."
He turned around and the temperature went back to normal.
"Now, I'll assume that you're going to have a heart to heart with your brother?"
Percy said nothing, but left the room.
I turned to Professor Frost, "What was that about?"
He simply shrugged, "That boy needed an ego check since he received his badge. Anyhow, I trust that your current treatment is better than before? With all the positive attention that is."
I just shrugged, "Sure. I mean, I'm not being used as a punching bag and my glasses aren't constantly broken so, yeah. Definite improvement."
Professor Frost looked at me concerned, "Who?"
"Dudley. My cousin," I told them, hoping I made it sound like no big deal.
He took a deep breath and came closer, "Did you feel lonely a lot growing up?"
I shrugged, "I guess, but it's okay. I like being alone. Plus, at least they didn't dump me on the streets."
He shook his head, "People who like to be alone don't know what it means to be truly alone."
I grew concerned, "Are you okay Professor Frost?"
He sighed, "Remember when I told you that Muggles can't see people like me unless they believe?" I nodded, "Well, for 290 years since I became Jack Frost, I didn't know about the Wizarding world. All I knew, was no one could see me. No matter what I tried, I was never noticed. It was enough for me to reach my breaking point. So I broke." I gasped and he paused, a single tear being seen in his eye. "If it weren't for Headmaster Dumbledore, I would probably be Hiding out in the South Pole every warm season."
I let it all sink in and he smiled.
"I can imagine my schedule will look something along the lines of 1 o'clock, wallow in self pity. 5 o'clock, solve world hunger. Tell no one." I chuckled. "5:30, snowball fight. 6:30, dinner with me. I can't cancel that again." I let out a short laugh before he continued. "7 o'clock, wrestle with my self loathing. I booked!"
I laughed at his humor and he smiled. "You're funny,"
"Why thank you," he said with a mock bow. "Anyway, I need to move the desks to the walls for my next day of lessons. Want to help?"
I nodded. Things are definitely looking up.
