Halloween Panic
-Jack Frost POV-
I decided to wear a more modern Japanese outfit. Yes, my closet was full of Kimonos, but I still have a dresser with less used clothing that has a more modern twist.
The one I selected for today was a simple yet elegant female fit dress. It had a more open neckline, angel wing sleeves and went down to just over my knees. Waves in the skirt section added more legg mobility and caused the skirt to rise when I spun. The base of the dress was orange while all the edges and folds of the fabric was laced with an inch wide black ribbon.
I decided to attempt to flatten my naturally unruly hair and brushed it to the side, fastening it with frost covered bobby pins.
I looked in the mirror and sighed. Fuan popped up. "Are you sure you want to wear that?"
I took a deep breath and Fuan's face softened. "I'm trying to open up to them more. Plus, it's festive."
I left the room, but Fuan followed me. Not saying anything. I knew he was there because of that uneasy feeling in my stomach even though I couldn't see him most of the time. The feeling continued to get worse as the Halloween feast approached, but the others continued to remind me that there was nothing to worry about. Fuan remained silent, yet his presence was strong.
The surrounding teachers noticed something was wrong, but I told them not to worry, assuring them I was only having an off day. My nervous glances at the Guardians talking among themselves said something entirely different.
Less than 10 minutes into the feast and Professor Quirl burst into the Hall shouting, "Troll! Troll in the dungeon!" Everything paused as we looked at him. "Thought you ought to know," he said before fainting.
There was an uproar as Fuan clung to Dõtoku in my mind palace. My heart beat almost tripled as I froze. The only movement was my trembling hands.
"Jack," Ronri said to me. "Your powers took down much greater than 20 of the most powerful trolls known to the wizarding world. You can outsmart and handle one easily. Plus, Dumbledore will never let anyone face it alone even if you're more than capable."
I took a shaky breath and felt a comforting hand on my back. I looked back and saw Tooth with a worried smile. I took one more breath to bring my nerves back under control.
Dumbledore fired purple explosions from his wand, successfully silencing everyone. "Now. Prefects will lead everyone to their dormitories. Professors will search the Dungeons."
I forced myself to stay calm as everyone began filing out of the Hall in a hurry. Dumbledore went to Snape, "Please go to the 3erd floor and guard it. We don't know if this is a diversion."
Snape said nothing, but went out of the room like asked.
We divided into groups. Me, Sandy, and McGonagall were to search the upper west part of the Dungeons and we were quick to go.
We searched diligently but found nothing. Not even the stench. We were about to regroup with the others, but that's when we heard roars and thuds from above us.
Wasting no time, we rushed up and located the source of the sound to be in the girls bathroom that went quiet soon before we reached it. Fuan up to the max, I threw the doors open and was shocked to see a full grown mountain troll unconscious on the floor. Harry, Ron, and Hermione surrounded it. Ron appeared to be frozen, his wand raised.
"What on earth were you thinking of?" said McGonagall, cold fury in her voice. Sandy made a ball of sand and looked at me, questioning. I nodded and he threw it at the Troll to keep it asleep. No pictures appeared as they lacked the intelligence to dream anything. "You're lucky you weren't killed. Why aren't you in your dormitory?"
We all waited for an explanation until a small voice came from the shadows.
"Please, Professor McGonagall. They were looking for me."
"Miss Granger!"
We looked at the trembling girl.
She continued, "I went looking for the troll because I… I thought I could deal with it on my own. I read all about them."
I raised an eyebrow as Ron lowered his wand. Why was she lying?
"If they hadn't found me, I'd be dead now. Harry stuck his wand up it's nose and Ron knocked it out with it's own club. They didn't have time to come fetch anyone. It was about to finish me off when they arrived."
The last part was true at least.
Professor McGonagall continued, "Well. In that case, Miss Granger, you foolish girl, how could you think of tackling a mountain troll on your own?"
I let out a chuckle drawing everyone's attention. "Come on Minerva. You're forgetting these two. After all, not many first years can come face to face with a full grown mountain troll and live tell the tail. You should give them a little credit. As for Granger, that was very brave. Stupid and unlikely that she would do a thing, but brave." I made eye contact with her to send a message that I scoped out her lie.
McGonagall took a deep breath, "Very well. Five points will be taken from Granger. I will give five points to Potter and Weasley. For dumb luck. Now, the feast is continued in the dorms."
Before anyone could move, Nearly Headless Nick came floating in. "There you are Jack. The Bennett first year is having a panic attack in the Common room and keeps saying your name."
"Jamie?" He confirmed my suspicions. I took a deep breath, "I'll escort these three to the dorm." Turning back to Nic I said, "Tell him I'll be right there."
He nodded and flew in a straight line to the Gryffindor common room in a way only ghosts could.
"Sandy, can you come too?" He gave a thumbs up in response.
Our group of five hurried up to the Common room with me pushing them along with my words.
Once we got there, I told the lady, "Pig Snout," and had the three students go in before me and Sandy went in.
Jamie was clutching Percy and had a look of relief when he saw Harry, Ron, and Hermione. When he saw me, he jumped up and dashed to me, putting me in a hug that almost knocked me over.
"Jack!" He exclaimed, crying tears of relief. "I was scared the troll would get you or the others!"
I let out a chuckle, "Can't get rid of me that easy."
He clutched me tighter so I led him to a couch where he continued to hug me from the side he was sitting. "Why does the Wizarding world even have Trolls?"
That took me off guard, but a certain tale came to mind. "Only Ahtohallan knows."
If I have one go too, other than fun, to distract from fear, it's confusion. "Who's Ahtohallan?"
I smiled, "An ancient Chinese tale states that high up north, there's a river full of all the answers of the past. It was even considered ancient before I became Jack Frost. They had a song to share the story."
"Can you sing it?" A voice I recognized as Alex White asked in the crowd.
I shrugged, "Might as well." Jamie smiled and scooted closer.
I smiled and wrapped my arms around him, glad he was now calm.
"Where the north wind, meets the sea
There's a river full of memory
Sleep my darling safe and sound
For in this river all is found"
Jamie began to fall asleep and I let him since I knew how exhausting a panic attack could be. As I sang the next verse, Sandy used his dream sand on him.
"In her waters deep and true
Lie the answers and a path for you
Dive down deep into her sound
But not to far or you'll be drowned
Yes she will sing to those who hear
And in her song all magic flows
But can you brave what you most fear?
Can you face what the river knows?"
I left his grasp and took a nearby blanket to cover him.
"Where the north wind meets the sea
There’s a mother full of memory
Come my darling homeward bound
When all is lost"
I smiled and moved his hair from his face.
"Then all is found"
I talked to the students more and we left the Common room and went to the Great Hall where all of the Professors were to meet after the troll was taken care of.
Instructions were given to proceed as normal tomorrow while certain teachers were told to carry the troll to the Ministry representatives.
North spoke to me, the other Guardians behind him. "You wished to talk with us, Jack?"
I froze, having forgotten all about it. I took a deep breath, "Well, I wanted some of the kids to be there. Are you all available tomorrow after school?"
It took some figuring out, but we decided to meet after school in two days on Friday. That said, they left and I went to my room.
Staff in hand, I opened the window and felt the brisk breeze hit my face. Autumn was sending a message. It's time to start frosting things.
I was tired, and Ronri was telling me it would be best to sleep tonight and frost tomorrow during my free time. Fuan was agreeing but was also stressing that the frost needed to be done as soon as I could. And I could now.
I took a deep breath and flew to the highest point of the roof. I raised my staff and slammed it on the roof. Frost began to form and I continued to put energy in it to spread a thin layer as far as I could.
Once most of Europe was frosted thin, I released my hold and fell to the roof. What little energy I had before was cut in half. My eyes drooped and I had to summon all my will power to go to my bed. Mainly because I knew I would sleep better if I was there.
I didn’t bother to change and fell asleep before I even got under the covers. I would only get four hours, but that should be enough for now.
Not gonna lie, I forgot this fic existed. I got some notifications from and was like, "Well... I should probably update this."
I do have a few chapter to upload, but I'm hesitant to do so because I have writers block on a chapter a few after this one. If I can't figure out how to continue it when I upload the chapter before it, I'll let you all know and ask for help.
Stay warm, Stay Awesome, happy late spooky season, and Merry Christmas.
