1. Coming Together
Audrey stared at the sheets of paper in front of her as if challenging them. Her fierce gaze fixated only on the black and white object in front of her, her arm muscles tensed greatly. Her forehead was wrinkled with great effort as her thoughts ran wildly.
"This makes no sense!" She finally exclaimed in her innocent voice, collapsing in her seat with a hunched back, although she quickly straightened herself, shaking her head. The sound she just heard made no sense, even if though the notes looked like a great piece of art painted by a god.
"Chopin composed this piece wrong," she declared, nodding her head with satisfaction.
"Chopin composed this piece wrong?" Audrey nodded once again as a deep voice said the statement with humorous confusion. Her senses shot up and her eyes widened as she realised someone came in.
"Oh, nothing! It's a great piece! A master's creation!"
Jay laughed softly as Audrey denied her earlier statement, shaking her hands and head frantically with a nervous look on her face. His smile only deepened as he approached her slowly, patting her head affectionately.
Audrey was quite mature, even though she was only ten. This was equal to the age of fourteen for humans, but sometimes, Jay though that Audrey might as well be thirty in human mentality. Something always kept her humble and soft, accommodating with everything, although she had her own childish moments, something he treasured dearly.
What was better, of course, was the laughing syndrome she was attacked by at the thought of her behaviour after she returned to her senses.
"What's the matter, Audrey?" Jay's face melted into a small smile as he walked to Audrey's side, crouching on his knees to reach her height.
"N-nothing, really. Just pianist problems," Audrey laughed nervously, rubbing her neck.
"Maybe I can help."
Audrey looked at him in thought, silence spreading in the room for a minute. She looked towards the sheet, then back towards Jay.
"The piece is quite tough, although I'm getting it." Audrey rubbed her head nervously, laughing again.
"There's this part I'm not able to play at all, though. It's been a week, and it sounds like something from another piece. Doesn't flow."
Audrey pursed her lips, looking at Jay eagerly. Jay looked towards the sheet, moving closer towards it.
"Can you play the part for me?"
Audrey widened her eyes slightly, taken aback by the request, but nodded, setting her hands on the keys.
Her fingers moved in an unsure, but enjoyable movement. Her face held the same expression as before, but Jay could sense her confused thrill.
Audrey rested her fingers on the keys, looking at Jay expectantly.
"The tre- I mean, the right hand notes don't go well with the left," Audrey said softly, looking at her small hands.
"Are you sure?" Jay asked thoughtfully. "Perhaps it's because you aren't playing it in the original pace, and you're used to hearing the perfect notes.
"A little girl once told me that there's no negativity, no frustration while learning a piece, for the mistakes, the experiments, and the entire practice is fun. I wonder who that was?"
Audrey giggled lightly, bowing her head towards the floor to hide it. Jay reached forward and began to tickle the little girl, her uncontrollable laughter a precious sound to his ears.
"Never forget your own words, Audrey. They'll help you some day."
Audrey took a deep breath as Jay inched away from her, controlling herself to not laugh again. She gave him a firm nod, a happy expression on her face.
"Now, do you want to meet your team, or would you rather wait another ten years?"
Audrey suddenly straightened herself, a shocked expression on her face. She got up hastily and began to run around the room, unsure of what to do.
"Aaaaah! I almost forgot about it! My team! I'm so nervous. And excited!"
Jay chuckled at her high emotions, walking towards her to hold her hand gently.
"Calm down. If you go now, you'll be just in time, so don't worry. Come, I'll take you."
Audrey smiled sweetly towards Jay, nodding her head in enthusiasm. Jay gently rubbed her head affectionately, messing her hair in the process.
The two walked towards the door, as the little girl skipped in excitement, showing no signs of letting go of her childish nature any soon.
"I have one question," Audrey said, not stopping her movement. "why does everyone like to mess my hair?"
Jay paused for a moment, shaking his head to restrain his laughter. He continued to take her to the door, bending down to pat her on the head.
"You're one of the only ones who doesn't mind people doing that."
-----
Audrey's eyes widened in wonder as she entered the hall with hastened steps, one hand in Jay's hands, and the other hiding shyly behind her back.
The white lights shone brightly in her grey eyes, illuminating what was in front of her. Aimlessly, she blew her hair so that it would stop troubling her eye, her expression remaining the same.
A childish flutter of joy erupted in her as she pointed towards the group of smiling kids in front of her, the same age as she was. It was a simple setup, with the lights shining on the polished floor, the walls painted a light grey, but there was something of high value that she sensed in here.
"How do you even do this?" Audrey looked up at Jay in awe.
"It's an ordinary setup," Jay said, a small laugh escaping him.
"No no," Audrey insisted, shaking her head slightly. "There's something here. I don't know what, but it makes me feel as if I'm flying."
Jay's eyes slightly widened at that, but soon melted into a soft smile. He crouched onto his knees, hunching his back to meet the little girl's height. In a compassionate movement, he reached for her head, patting it gently.
"You, my dear, will certainly fly at great heights in the future."
Audrey's smile deepened, and Jay tried to control his emotions, keeping his joy in check.
"Honest?"
"Honest."
With that, Audrey gave him the brightest smile ever, and the two parted their ways.
Audrey walked into the centre of the room, being confidently shy. She shook her head, returning to her serious mood, smiling at everyone who made contact with her. She couldn't push away the feeling of excitement, though, but she knew that she didn't want to do so.
"Hey kiddos," Jay said in a loud, but soft voice, spreading an aura of joy throughout the room.
"It's finally time for your Choosing Day! Today, you'll be divided into groups; groups that have already been decided, leaving no thought.
"I'm sure you'll all get along very well, and over the course of your five years of training together, strengthen bond. Teamwork is absolutely essential, and you must complement each other.
"Now, without further ado, please stand in five rows as I call out your names."
Audrey took a sharp, deep breath, as her heart began to beat fast. She walked into the neat line assembled in front of her, closing her eyes momentarily. She felt a gentle hand on her shoulder, immediately knowing who it was.
"Hello, Mr. Trying To Be Sneaky."
Audrey didn't turn around as she knew Galen would try to somehow trick her. She closed her eyes, leaning her head towards the left, then suddenly turned towards her right.
She grasped Galen's hand in the last second, but was surprised to find no one behind her. Somehow, she had grabbed her own hand. She quickly left it, embarrassed. Her eyes narrowed in exhaustion as she gently elbowed the air towards her right.
"I don't know if you're smart or dumb," Galen said in a slightly mischievous tone, controlling his laughter at Audrey's unimpressed look.
She suddenly put her finger to her lips, shushing him as the lights around her dimmed slightly, indicating the start of the grouping.
A wave of adrenaline rushes through her as her heart began to pound briefly, sending thrills along her skin. A perfectly mixed feeling of nervousness and excitement filled her, but she took a deep breath, keeping a sound mind and a composed posture. Galen's stoic stance was something she both admired and had difficulty in understanding. How he could keep himself calm was something she was curious to know about, but it made her realise exactly how much she didn't know about her closest friend.
"Maria," Jay called out on a deep, loud, but calm voice, indicating the start of the grouping. Audrey's focus shot towards his face as she took a deep breath, closing her eyes momentarily. She stood still for a while, focusing on the air running around her, before letting a fierce smile come on her face.
Jay continued to group the children, and although Audrey's heart beat fast, she felt confident, looking forward to meet her team mates.
"Audrey."
Audrey took a sharp breath at the mention of her name, letting it pass out slowly. Her eyes scanned the room to see that only twelve students were left.
Straightening herself, she stepped into the circle that Jay was pointing at. Jay gave her a sweet smile, and she returned the gesture.
"Elek."
A hyperactive boy skipped towards Audrey, a huge grin on his face. He raised his hand casually, waving it only once towards the right. Audrey frowned slightly, but her serious expression soon broke into a smile as the boy stood beside her. She studied his messy hair and the casual attire, noticing his obvious carelessness towards his untied shoelaces.
"Trina."
A rather serious-looking girl walked confidently with an unimpressed expression, looking at her teammates with a disinteresting curiosity. She wore a black shirt and a white skirt, walking boldly and with care, as if she would offend someone with a casual stance. Audrey smiled towards her, but she returned a confused smile. returning towards her unimpressed look.
"Galen."
Audrey felt her heart jump at the mention of his name. She went hyper internally, controlling herself from jumping around. Galen walked with a confident smile, greeting his teammates with a short nod of his head, which Trina seemed to appreciate. Audrey gave him a high-five as he walked towards her side, visibly over-joyed.
"Evelyn."
Audrey looked around in confusion as a moment of silence passed without any movement. She suddenly felt a gush of wind behind her. Instinctively, she crouched slightly and turned towards the source of the wind. She frowned when she saw a thin but strong girl stand behind them with a sly smile, her auburn hair tied in a bushy pony.
"Yo. You guys got good reaction time."
Evelyn nodded towards us, observing us as we did the same. Galen was the only one who didn't move other than a slight movement of his head, his hair covering the sides of his face to give off a mysterious effect.
Elek, without warning, moved his finger to untie Evelyn's hair, grinning at his success. Evelyn scowled, but suddenly raised her right arm up as if aiming at Elek's stomach. Elek saw this coming, successfully blocking her, but in the last moment, brought her left hand towards Elek's neck, tickling him.
"No!" Elek protested, laughing uncontrollably. Evelyn withdrew her hand, putting great effort to not laugh.
"Don't train just yet, Evelyn and Elek," Jay said with a slight shake of his head. A few of the other students looked at the two with a confused look, although the others were quite clearly enjoying the show.
"Lastly, Conrad."
Audrey immediately noticed Evelyn's wide grin. A slightly muscular boy walked in an awkward manner, a shy yet bold smile on his face, showing his nervousness and excitement clearly.
Evelyn put a hand around his neck, but Conrad ignored her, greeting the other four. Evelyn tugged her hand harder, but Conrad merely gave her an unimpressed look, swiftly lifting her hand from his neck.
A bright smile came on Audrey's face as the last group was called out, and the session of Coming Together was finally over. Audrey felt something new fill her, and she took a deep breath, only increasing the weird sensation within her.
She looked at her teammates with great joy and confidence as they all made their way towards the defence rooms, heading towards the training rooms.
She was sure that her time with them would be beyond interesting.
----- -------
Audrey opened her eyes slowly, letting the calm breeze fill her ears. The fresh smell of the flowers filled her nostrils, accompanying the warm rays of the sun falling on her slightly tanned skin. The tranquil, white space around her never ceased to amaze her, always keeping her mind at peace.
She sighed, looking towards the palms laying on her lap, facing the ceiling.
"This brings great memories. It's only fitting to start with the day we came together."
Audrey turned her head up, looking both nowhere, and beyond the illusionary white blanket. A gentle breeze passed again, playing with her hair.
She brought her head in the middle to face the powerful sensation of great energy in front of her, a confident smile on her face.
"I'm ready."
