Chapter 1. The First Letter

Audra's P.O.V.

"Audra! AUDRA!" my mom yelled. I opened my eyes and smiled. Today was my 13th birthday!

I hopped out of my bed and looked in the mirror. My blond-brown hair would need some work. Sighing, I snatched my fluffy lavender robe and quickly took off my p.j.'s. I got into the shower. Once done, I blow-dried my hair. I scrunched my thick, long curls joyfully. "Now, what to wear?" I muttered.

I grabbed a light blue Downeast Wonder Tee and a dark purple Lace Tee. I put them on. Next, I got my dark blue Levi's on. I picked out some black socks and blue Converse. I needed some jewelry. I opened my sea blue jewelry box and looked at my multiple choices.

I decided on a gold ring with a blue diamond, my matching dangly earrings, a gold chain charm necklace with too many charms to count, and a silver mermaid tail wrap around bracelet. I walked downstairs and into the kitchen. My mom was making French Toast with thick bacon. Yum!

"Hi, Audra!" my little sister, Kamillia, exclaimed happily. She was 3 years younger than me exactly, meaning that she was turning 10 today. I smiled and ruffled her hair. It was similar to my hair, except it was shorter.

"Happy Birthday, girls!" my mom said. She took the French Toast and bacon to the table. We both sat down and started eating. That was when I heard a knock at the door. I darted over to it. I opened the door and saw mail sitting on the doormat.

I picked up the mail and shifted through it. Bills, advertisements, school stuff for Kamillia and I...

I stopped short.

One of the letters was addressed to me. The envelope was plain and white. It was to me and was from...

"The Talent Academy?" I asked to no one in particular. My mom frantically rushed in.

"Audrey?" she said.

I gulped. Whenever she said my full name, something was up.

"Yeah, Mom?"

"We need to talk."

Tris' P.O.V.

I darted after my twin brother. He had taken Divergent, the book that had given me my nickname. Yeah, my full name is Beatrice. I used to go by Bea, but after reading that book, my nickname instantly changed. It changed to Tris.

"Give it back, Jake!" I screamed. My brother smiled and slowly began to tear out a page. That was the last straw. I tackled Jake. I pinned him down and snagged the book.

"Dude, Tris, calm down," Jake said. I got off of him and he stood up. I pulled out my iPhone 5C and checked my hair in the front camera. I sighed and adjusted my high ponytail. Smoothing out my light brown hair, I set the book down. My dark brown eyes stared at me. I put my phone next to Divergent.

I turned to Jake. "I can't believe that we turned 13 a week ago."

"I know, right?"

"What should we do right now?" I asked.

"Can we play the XBOX?" he replied.

"Sure. LEGO Marvel?"

"LEGO Marvel." We grabbed controllers and started playing.

---

"Jake! Tris! Come downstairs, please!" my mom hollered.

"Okay!" we both yelled. We walked downstairs and saw her. She had something behind her back. She took them out. They were white envelopes addressed to us. We took them. They were from The Talent Academy.

"Mom? Don't you work here as the Dancing teacher?" Jake asked.

"Yeah. You guys get to come!" my mom squealed with joy.

"WHAT?!" Jake and I exclaimed.

"You went there?" I asked in shock.

"Yes. There were different teachers, and most of the teachers there today went there with me," my mom answered.

"Okay... can I open this, now?" I sighed.

"Yeah, go ahead."

I turned the letter over. A gold wax seal kept it closed. It said TTA on it. I opened the envelope. A piece of folded paper sat inside. I took out the paper and unfolded it. It read:

Dear Audrey Marie Lake,

You have been chosen to join our school. There are a few reasons as to why you may have been chosen.

One reason is your parents or relatives went there once. Another reason is you are very talented. Also, you may live close to the academy and have been expecting this letter. Whatever the reason, you have been chosen.

If you are 13, you are a first year. You should get this letter near the end of summer.

If not, you have received the wrong letter. Sorry!

First years at The Talent Academy get two letters after this one. This letter has basic information. The second letter has your packing list and class choices, along with many other forms. The third letter has some academy supplies.

Thanks for joining The Talent Academy! Your next letter should come tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Brittany Huff, Principal

I finished reading the letter and sighed. I hugged my mom and we walked back into the kitchen.

Jake and I read our letters. When we finished, we simply stared at my mom. Then, we ran back upstairs and continued playing.

"Tris?"

"Yeah, Jake?"

"Are we leaving our old school for this?"

"It seems like we are."

"Okay. Honestly, that letter seemed a little suspicious."

"It did!"

"Well, I am starving. Want to go eat some lunch?"

"Yeah. Let's make some Ramen."

"Fine by me."
