Chapter Twenty-Nine

For the beginning so there's no confusion, y/n is dreaming. But the beginning of the dream is basically a memory, then in the middle it shifts into a nightmare meaning the ending of it isn't something that happened. I hope this makes sense 😅

Just for Tonight

(Y/n)'s POV
After Master Ti had died in my arms, I remained in the cave for days; dehydrated, starving, and craving the warmth of the sun rather than the coldness of stone. I cried, I whaled, and I screamed for someone to help me, to somehow hear me. But no one ever came for me, and by day three my hope had nearly deteriorated.

I was stuck down here with creatures that have been lurking in the shadows, watching me and waiting for the light around me to go out. That was the only reason I wasn't dead, these things, they're weakened by light and many die moments after exposure. They're creatures of the darkness, ones that have never known the touch of a light, so when it occurs, they aren't adapted enough to handle it.

What I had was my lightsaber. It gave off what I needed, but I wasn't sure how long it would work. It's unknown how long a lightsaber can withstand being on, but I feel like three days is pushing the limit.

I looked across from me at Master Ti's lifeless body, and just as my eyes met her cold ones. She was slowly dragged backwards into the darkness, her hand being the last thing I saw before she completely disappeared.

My eyes widened in surprise and fear stabbed at my heart. I gazed up at the darkness; breath shaking, body trembling, and tears falling. I was terrified, and the part that scared me the most is that in front of me used to be a wall.

To my left led down to where Master Ti and I were attacked, and the right led to the entrance that had been utterly destroyed, trapping us in here. So in front of me was the cave wall, but now it was a pit of darkness and I couldn't see a single thing ahead.

But I did begin to hear something.

I clutched my lightsaber tight in my hand as I listened to it, breathing. It didn't sound like a normal human breathing either, it was inhuman, almost robotic.

It but sounded far away, like the darkness went on endlessly. Moments later my lightsaber flew from my grasp and into the hole ahead. I watched the purple light fade away until it was completely gone, plunging me into an eerie darkness that shook me to the core.

I began to tremble more and sob as I waited for the monsters to come for me, I couldn't save myself anymore, not even the force would be of any use. I was unarmed and weak.

I waited as the breathing got louder and louder, and following it was the sound of heavy footsteps that echoed more the closer the breathing got. But I still couldn't see anyone or anything, and that is what scared me the most — nothing is more terrifying than the unknown and no one can change my mind.

"Go away!" I screamed and every noise around me suddenly died. There was no breathing, no footsteps, nothing.

Slowly I stood up from the ground and eyed the darkness, "I'm so sorry, please forgive me," Anakin's voice is what I finally heard echoing and  exiting from the opening. His voice was distraught and heavy with sorrow, "I didn't mean to hurt you, I was only trying to save you." He whimpered, followed by a broken sob.

"Anakin," I called for him nervously.

"Please come back." He sobbed.

"Anakin!" I yelled again, louder this time as I took one step closer to the darkness. He sounded like he was in deep pain, like he needed me. And I had a strong urge to find him and help him, but my fear kept me in place like a statue.

Then I heard it again, that breathing. And before I knew it, a red light appeared before me, a lightsaber, it was pointing down to the side, illuminating a set of boots at the entrance of the black hole.

My eyes traveled upwards, then, I screamed.

And that's how I woke up — screaming.

I shot up in the bed with tears in my eyes, a scream parting from my throat. Immediately I felt someone grab ahold of me, "Hey hey, clam down, you're okay," Anakin's smooth voice was the first thing I heard as he pulled me close to his chest and wrapped his arms around me—doing his best to comfort me, "I'm right here, nothing is happening to you."

It was like he knew everything that needed to be said and done in order to calm me down, because it took less than a couple seconds for that to happen. Now I wasn't fully calm, I was still in a state of distraught, but I was able to stop shaking enough to look him in the eyes and take a deep breath that he guided me through with his hands on my shoulders.

He then removed his hands from me once my mind comprehended I was in reality, and I was able to finally breathe without a coach.

I looked around the room, realizing I was still in his, "I-I'm sorry I fell asleep, I didn't-"

He waved his hand in dismissal, "Don't worry about it. Do you want to talk to me about what it was that made you scream like that?"

I sighed as I looked away and rubbed my eyes, my heart beat finally calming down to a normal rhythm, "I'm not sure what it was," I dropped my hands down on the blanket that covered my thighs, "One moment it was a memory of me in that cave with Master Ti and then," I glanced up, meeting his curious blue eyes, "It became a nightmare. There was this shadow that appeared and it," I looked down at my stomach where I remember feeling a sting from a blade. I sighed, "—it scared me and the next thing I knew I was awake." I don't know why I hid the fact that the shadow had actually killed me, I guess I was nervous he was going to make it more than it was — a nightmare. One symbolizing my own guilt.

I've had way too many dreams these past few months to not know how to interpret them. I'm an expert at this point.

That's why I heard Anakin's voice calling out to me, I'm terrified of failing him just as I failed her. And since I didn't move to help him, and instead stayed frozen in fear once again, the shadow killed me as a punishment. Or at least, that's my theory.

"But it's nothing, I get nightmares like that all the time," I grabbed his blanket and tossed it off of me, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have fallen asleep in here and woke you up-"

"You didn't wake me up," He cut me off as he grabbed my arm to stop me from leaving. Then he let go once I had fully sat back down, "I was working on Artoo."

"Oh," I said as he stood up and walked back to his droid. He sat on the floor and picked up a tool before his eyes shifted to me as I spoke, "I should go-"

"You don't have to leave," He said bluntly, his eyes turned back to Artoo, "I know you feel safer when you're not alone." He spoke low as he switched tools and momentarily glanced at the floor when he did, "Are you okay though? I'm no stranger to nightmares so I know they can be difficult to handle." He sighed while continuing to fix his droid and I noticed mine not far away from him — off and plugged into something.

He wasn't wrong about feeling safer in his presence, so I slowly brought my legs back onto the bed. I glanced at the clock, it was nearly two in the morning, meaning I slept the entire day, "I'm okay, but I don't really want to talk about it anymore." I covered my legs back up with the blanket, noticing my shoes were no longer on my feet.

Did he take them off for me?

Anakin nodded in understanding as he placed a screwdriver in one of the bolts and tightened it, "I get that. Well if you can, you can go back to sleep, I promise I won't be going anywhere."

"Okay," I took off my tunic and left myself in just my undershirt before laying my head down on one of his soft pillows. My eyes were on him and I watched him work, admiring the skills I've only heard rumors about, "How did you get so good at fixing things?" I realize that I hardly know much about him except the gossip I heard from other Jedi and the personal things Padme told me on Naboo.

Which he still doesn't know I know.

He paused for a moment before resuming, his eyes never meeting mine, "I've been fixing and building things since I was a kid, so it's just a skill I've adapted over the years."

"Mm," I hummed with a nod as I covered myself with the blanket until it reached my neck, "Do you have a favorite thing you've ever built?"

I saw the corner of his mouth twitch like he was suppressing a smile, "Yes actually, a protocol droid that I named C-3PO, I made him for my mother."

"Your mother?" I asked like I was clueless.

Of course I already knew he had a mother that passed, but that's the limit of my knowledge. Padme didn't go into detail about how she died, just that she did and Anakin was devastated. I'm also curious to see if he would even tell me anything about his past willingly.

"Yes," He nodded, "Unlike many of you, I had the luxury of getting to know my mother before the Jedi came for me. She was the kindest woman you would ever know."

"Wow, what happened to you then?"

He snapped his head in my direction and started to laugh, a genuine one that I felt in the pit of my stomach, like butterflies, "She used to say something similar whenever I was having one of my infamous childhood tantrums." He explained his amusement.

I smiled, "She sounds like a lovely woman then."

"She really was," He looked away and to the tools in his hand as his smile slowly died.

"You're lucky you got to know her," I broke the lingering silence, "I sometimes wonder what mine was like or what she looks like. I always pictured her with the same eyes as me, and I imagine she's beautiful-"

"She has to be." Anakin stated before I could finish. The widening of his eyes has me wondering if he meant to say that or not.

"What do you mean by that?"

"Uh," He awkwardly began lifting and putting tools down, clearly pretending like he was searching for something specific, "Nothing."

I knitted my brows, "Are you calling me beautiful again?"

He stopped moving and met my eyes, "Again?"

I nodded as a smirk slowly spread across my lips, "Yes that night you were drunk you told me I would be beautiful if I wasn't so annoying, or something along those lines." I shrugged, "And I told you the same thing."

He tilted his head and set the wrench in his hand down on the carpet, "So you think I'm beautiful too?"

"Too?"

He pushed his tongue to the inside of his cheek, knowing he was caught a second time slipping up, "Fine, you're not bad to look at. But that doesn't mean anything." He rolled his eyes

"I never said it did, Master." I kept my eyes locked with his, feeling a twist in my stomach that was oddly pleasurable and painful at the same time.

He quickly looked away after a few seconds and sighed, "Go back to sleep, I haven't decided if we're doing anything tomorrow yet but I want you well rested just in case."

"I slept all day though," I sighed as well, not knowing if I'll be able to fall asleep again.

"And now you'll sleep all night, you almost lost your life so you need more than the average right now," He snapped his finger and the light next to the bed shut off, but the working lamp above him remained on and I took comfort in that.

I sighed and snuggled myself in the blanket and pillows that smelled like him, and it was surprisingly relaxing, "Alright, but wake me when you want to go to bed so I can go to mine." I said with a yawn before closing my eyes.

So I guess I was wrong, I could sleep again.

What may have been hours later, I felt a weight on the bed shift next to me. I opened my eyes, "Sorry," Anakin whispered quietly, "I wasn't trying to wake you."

After my blurry vision cleared up, I realized he was already laying down, his eyes on mine as his head rested on the pillow, "I thought I told you to so I could-"

"You're not the only one who finds comfort in not being alone."

I blinked in surprise, "Oh-uh just for tonight then."

He nodded in agreement before slowly closing his eyes and moving a little closer to me, but not close enough for us to touch, "Just for tonight."

Hope you liked it ❤️
