Chapter five

Briiiiiing!

The bell rang, releasing us from our fourth period classes to lunch. I walked to the toward the cafeteria feeling the money in my pocket. Two dollars for one entree, what a rip off. But I had to eat.

There were no kids in the halls because I left class late. You think it would be easy to put away a trumpet when you're alone. But my mouthpiece was stuck so Ms, Denton had to help me.

Either way, I was alone in the halls. At least I thought I was.

In a moment I was pulled and shoved back against the wall. Martin, the school bully, smiled at me as he held  down. "Hey Jakey, I'm hungry."

"That's your problem." I replied trying to get out of his grip, which tightened.

"No. It's yours." He started, "Give me your money."

"No. I need to eat too." That was a mistake. Martin raised his fist.

"Hey what do you think you're doing!?"I heard a girl say, making us both look. She walked over and shoved Martin away, "Back off, man child!"

Martin stumbled backwards. He looked like he was going to says something but stomped off instead.

I looked at her, not recognizing her.

But she smiled at me and held her hand out, "Hi. I'm Deveidra."

"Are you new or something?......" I asked, taking her hand and shaking it.

"Yep." She replied, dropping her hand. "And you are?....."

"Oh, I'm Jacob...." I said.

She smiled, "Or Jakey to man child over there."

I scratched the back of my head, "You heard that?"

"Yep." She replied and laughed a bit.

We started walking, "So where are you from?" I asked.

"A place." She said.

"What's this place called?"

"Something,"

"It's called Something?"

"No. But it does have a name"

"What is that name?"

She stopped and turned to me, "Meet me after school and I might tell you." Then she walked away. Just like that she was gone.

The bell rang as everyone went back to class, but I didn't move. I stood there, trying to make sense of what just happened. "Deveidra......" I whispered.
