Chapter Twenty-Two: Blue

Blue

Izabelle's POV

I'm staring at the courtyard through my window, tracing the the ring on thread around my neck through my fingers. I'm staring at the two people sitting on the fountain. I had completely interrupted them but what does it matter. The blond kid kisses the girl on the head and they sit like that for a few minutes before she gets up to go inside. I sigh at the looks on their faces. If only they knew what they meant to eachother. There's a knock on my door and I spin around. The girl from the fountain is standing in my doorway. "Hi..." She says meekly.

"Hey." She looks around my room and steps in. Her brown hair falls in front of her face and she wipes it to the side, giving me a better view of her face. She has a straight nose, a sharp feature. It matches her lips and eyes.

"Um... I just thought I'd introduce myself and say hi..." She steps closer to me and I'm getting uncomfortable. "I'm Jade." She sticks out her hand but I neglect to shake it. "And um... Hi." I nod hi again and turn around. "I like your hair." She says. My hair was falling out of its pinned form. Twigs still infested it. Then I realize she probably means the color and not the state.

"Thanks..." I try to pull the twigs out but fail miserably, making a bigger mess of things.

"I can help if you want-"

"No." I can hear a change in her stance, in her voice.

"You know I could be so much more mean to you." I turn around to see her with her arms crossed. Her face no longer looks shy and kind.

"Really? I dare you." She smirks.

"I came here to get better so I'm gonna refrain from hurting you."

"Oh thank you." I say in a mimicking tone. She turns and walks to the door.

"Who hurt you?" I glare at her. "Was it the person who gave you that ring?" She gestures to the ring around my neck. I grasp it in my hand and tell her to get out. She shrugs and leaves. Holding in my anger, I teleport to a random canyon. Standing on the edge I yell out into the open area. "FUCK YOU!" It echoes back, repeating what I said a series of times. I don't care what anybody thinks anymore.

I fall from the same tree in the courtyard. "Fuck... Why does this keep happening..." I stand up and brush the leaves off my shirt. I hear laughing and I look over to see Jade standing on the fountain with Daniel and the blond boy standing around her. Dan is talking and both Jade and the boy are cracking up. Why are they talking to Daniel. They don't seem like the type to like tattoos and gages. The boy glances at me. Jade places her hand on Daniel's shoulder and something comes over me. I'm about to transport right over her head and beat her face in but someone grabs me by the collar of my shirt.

"Nuh uh uh..." I choke a little bit and am lifted to my feet by the blond kid. "I wouldn't do that if I were you sweetheart." He brushes a leaf off my shoulder. "You see, Jade's reflexes are a bit... Extreme." I laugh.

"What did she do, kill someone?" I mock him. The look on his face tells me otherwise. "Look kid-"

"Aaron."

"Okay... I don't care... Go tell your girlfriend to get away from Dan." He laughs.

"She's not my girlfriend." He leans closer and whispers. "And the last time I checked, he isn't your boyfriend." I grunt in disgust and walk over to the fountain. When Dan sees me his face lights up but he tries to hide it.

"Izz-... I mean hey Belle..." I actually smile at him and walk to stand at his side. "You meet Jade yet?" I glare at her and he gets my answer. We stare at eachother when all of a sudden I fall to the ground.

"Daniel!" He's standing where he was. Usually he's the one to wipe me off y feet, but not this time.

"Wasn't me Izzy..." I don't even have time to correct him bacause a poof of red smoke appears and two of my least favorite people show up.

"Azazel. Get the girl." The red devil looking guy in a black suit steps towards Jade. I stand up and back towards Dan. Magneto is hovering over the top of the fountain. His red cape is floating around him.

"Belle..." Dan whispers to me. "Get Logan." I don't even nod. Next thing I know I'm standing in the Professor's room. Logan is sitting in a chair when I grab him by the ear.

"Come on wolf boy."

Jade's POV

Belle disappears one minute and the next thing I know Logan is standing next to her. He snarls as soon as he sees Magneto. "Well hello Logan, nice to see you after our last... Mishap...." He pulls me behind him.

"Blue..." Belle rolls her eyes. "Get her out of here." She is hesitant. Aaron steps forward, volunteering to protect me. "Kid you stay. Belle. Now." He says sternly. Azazel runs at me but Belle grabs my arm and we disappear into a puff of blue smoke. When it clears I see that we are no longer at the school.

We are standing under a tree next to some cliff. Below it lies an open body of water and beyond lay some mountains. I see Dan standing on the other side of Belle. She's about to walk away from us but I grab her arm. "What the heck-" I hush her.

"He's here..." She's about to ask who when Azazel drops from the tree and onto her. Dan gets pushed back and I fall to the ground. Azazel holds a blade to her throat and I draw my swords. Dan is about to do something stupid but I give him a look telling him to back off. Azazel whips his tail at me, which has a sharp arrow tip that slices the left strap of my tank top. I start dueling with this dude's tail, trying to find time to free Belle. "Wait." Everyone stops. "What the heck are you doing?" Azazel turns to look at Dan but I was talking to Belle. Why didnt she just teleport out?

Izabelle's POV

I finally understand what Jade means. I had just been a little preoccupied with a sharp pointy thing being held to my throat. Dan sprints straight into Azazel and I take this as my moment to move. At the last minute Azazel grabs me and we end up in the sky twenty feet over the edge of the cliff. We have to keep teleporting higher to stay up and he swipes at me with his tail. I move just in time but the string holding my ring gets sliced in half. I watch as my prized possession falls a hundred feet down. "NO!"

Aaron's POV

The blue haired girl took Jade and Dan somewhere. "Logan!" He's in the middle of a stare down with Magneto.

"I mean it Magneto, stay away from her." Magneto chuckles and I step in front of Logan, my jaw clenched.

"If you fucking touch her-"

"Aaron..." Logan tries to stop me.

"No Logan, let the boy explain this to me." He lowers himself to the ground. "What will you do if I touch her?" My hand folds into a fist.

"AARON!" Logan is thrown at me, claws stretches out. I instantly cover myself in a shield.

"Very nice." Magneto nods in approval. Logan stands up and pushes me aside.

"Leave now." He starts to choke as the metal chain attached to his dog tag tightens around his neck.

He looks at me, trying to tell me something. I glance at Magneto and see his shadow just within reach. I hesitate, considering how Jade made me promise to never control a person's shadow again. But she likes Logan, so I don't think she'll mind me saving his life.

Izabelle's POV

I'm so fixated on my ring that I don't notice I'm falling through the air. I'm about to hit the ground when Dan catches me in his arms. I look at him in awe but he doesn't look back, he's keeping an eye out for Azazel. His jaw is clenched as he holds me tightly. He runs over to the tree and sets me down. "Stay here."

"But-" He looks at me worriedly.

"Stay." Azazel grabs Jade and I see them struggling 50 feet in the air. He teleports back to the ground as Jade starts to fall.

"Shit..." Dan yells for her and looks at me. I appear next to her and I can see that she is extremely terrified. She grabs ahold of me and I sigh but bring us safely back to the ground. Immediately I am thrown to the side by Azazel as he and Jade begin to duel. Again.

Jade is still fighting with Azazel, and neither is about to give up. I have to hand it to her, she has skill. He'll teleport to all different sides and she still manages not to get skewered. Within a matter of seconds I'm being held by the throat again, and this time it's Azazel's tail that is cutting off my oxygen. He stabs at Jade, making her back up to the edge of the cliff. He slices at her shoulder, cutting what seems to be an old wound. She swears and tries to lift her weakened arm. Azazel teleports to right above the ocean and drops me but Jade is able to spin around just in time to grab ahold of my wrist. Unfortunately this is with her injured arm and she yells in pain. Just as she grabs me she turns and throws a knife into the shoulder of a reappeared Azazel. Stunned with the fact that in less than a second she was able to catch me and get him, he whimpers and teleports, disappearing into the familiar red smoke. "You okay?" Jade struggles with pulling me up.

"I didn't need you to catch me."

"You seemed a little dazed." Jade almost drops me but hurls me over her head at the last minute. "Mother fucker!" She holds her bleeding arm. Dan runs over to me and lifts me up.

"You two okay?" I nod, realizing that I am a little too dazed to function. "Okay, stay here, I'm going to get a general idea of where we are." He rushes off and I plop down next to Jade.

"Why do you hate me." Jade questions me, her forehead creased.

"I don't..." She looks at me, knowing that I'm not telling the truth. "I don't hate YOU... I just hate what you have..." She scoots closer to me. "And don't expect me to explain my reasoning, I don't talk abo-"

"Trust issues." She cuts in, but perfectly. I nod and realize it's probably the same for her. My fingers dart to my neck to feel my ring but I remember that it isn't there. Jade pulls somethingout of her pocket and my heart jumps. "Here." She hands me the chain, with my ring tied to the end of it. "I'm sure that whoever hurt you had a good enough reason... Because they loved you too..." I bite my lip and trace over the engraved letters on the inside band 'As You Wish'. It was our little inside joke, based off of my favorite movie. I look at Jade to see her fighting the pain, her arm looks horrible and her nose is bleeding. I smile at her.

"Thanks." Maybe she isn't what I thought she'd be like.

"No problem, just-" She tries to get up but falls so I grab her hand and pull her up, "Please don't tell anyone about my... little fear..." She glances up at the sky and laughs.

"Little? Honey you were screaming like a little bitch." She laughs and punches me in the arm playfully.

"Shut up." Just then Dan runs up and sees us both laughing.

"Ahh you made friends, good. Now Izabelle take me home, I'm hungry."

Jade's POV

We fall from a tree. "Belle you really need to work on that..." I look over to see that she has landed in Daniel's lap. She has her arms wrapped around his neck and he's holding her bridal style. She's trying not to smile. He looks at her so lovingly that it hurts my heart. I don't want to ruin the moment so I start to walk away. Logan comes running towards me.

"Jade!" He's out of breath. "You have to stop him! He's been holding him like that for an hour!"

"Who?" I look behind Logan to see Aaron holding Magneto by his shadow. Magneto's arm is bent behind his back and his face is a light shade of blue. "AARON NO!" I sprint over but I am shut out. He made sure that no one would be able to get to him. "Aaron!" I bang on the force field. He turns his head and I am shocked at what I see. His eyes are black. His hair is dark brown and veins are popping out of his skin. I bang on the field harder until he finally shuts it down. I run to his side and place one hand on his shoulder. "Aaron..." I whisper. I reach out and stroke his cheek. He is cold to the touch. I lean in and whisper into his ear. "Aaron you are better than this." He speaks but the voice isn't his.

"No I'm not." I tug at the cloth around his wrist. It's the same cloth from my shirt, the one I gave him back at the Camp. I start to smile at the fact that he's still wearing it but I stop, remembering where I am.

"Look at this! What you are doing is a choice. You saved Logan now stop!" A smile spreads across his face, an evil smile. "Aaron Shields you are my best friend." I lean forward and kiss him right by the ear. The moment my lips come in contact with his skin, I can feel him begin to warm. His eyes brighten up and his hair returns blond. He sees what he is doing and freaks out, dropping Magneto. He takes a few steps back and passes out. Luckily I can catch him before he hits the ground. "Get Storm!" Belle gets on it. Magneto stands up and stares at Aaron. I don't like how he is looking at him like he is a new scrap of meat. "Don't look at him like that!" I rest his head in my lap and protectively cover him with my arms. "If you fucking touch him..." Magneto laughs.

"That's funny my dear, he said the exact same words about you." With that he disappears in a poof of red smoke.

"Azazel is pissing me off..." I mutter. I gaze down at Aaron's perfect face. I place my lips on his forehead and hold them there for a moment. His eyes flutter open and he smiles when he sees me.

"And what Jade? I'm you're best friend and what?" I sigh with relief.

"And if you ever scare me again like that I'll kick your ass." He laughs and closes his eyes. "Aaron..." He places a finger to my lips.

"Shhh... Sleepy time..." I giggle at his response. I actually need to talk to him about what had happened but I guess hosting a demon takes a lot out of you.

"What am I going to do with you."

"Anything you want sweetheart." He opens his eyes and winks at me. I laugh with disgust and push his head off of my lap. I wince when I move my arm. "Jade... you're hurt again." He pulls me up and walks me inside. "You have got to stay out of trouble."

"You're joking right?" He laughs and shakes his head. He wraps one arm around my waist and the other holds my arm as he walks me to see Storm.

Logan's POV

I walk over to Izabelle and ruffle her hair. She looks at me with a small grin, hoping that I'll say it. "Good job Blue..." She smiles and leans against me. She and I have not always gotten along. When I first met her, she was stealing from banks and other stores, and always getting into trouble. I think she blamed me for some things, but I've never cleared that up. I put my arm around her and giver her shoulders a slight squeeze. "I mean it... you did good..." She glances up at me and smiles again, but bigger this time.

"Thanks Logan..."

Aaron's POV

I spent a good portion of the day trying to remember other parts of the day, and quite honestly, it's exhausting. When I walk into the study, I head straight to the bookcase, realizing it's been forever since I've read a book. My eyes scan the spines of each book, looking for something that sounds good. "Oh God..." I stop and pull out a small book I haven't read since eighth grade. "The Iliad..." I sigh. shaking my head. No one in my class loved this book like I did. I find the story, Greek mythology in general, so interesting. Taking a seat on the couch, I stretch my legs out and lay down, opening the book.

"Aaron?" I hold my thumb on the page, saving my spot, and look over to the stairs. Jade stands there with her blanket wrapped around her arms, staring at me. I smile and wave her over to the couch, where she plops down right in front of me, her back facing the fire. She stares curiously at the book in my hands. "What are you reading?" I show her the cover and she reads it. "The I-Ilia-d? What's that?" I'm surprised. Everyone was tortured in eighth grade and had to read this, even though I didn't mind the least bit.

"Seriously? You never read this in-" I stop realizing my words. Jade avoids my gaze and adjusts the blanket around her shoulders. She spent five years in the Camp, and all the years before that on the streets. Jade never went to school, she never had the chance. Her eyes scatter around the page, trying to decipher words, then a thought comes to me. "Jade... Do you know how to read?" She scrunches her eyebrows and nods her head quickly.

"Of course, I'm not stupid Aaron." She sounds hurt, which is understandable. Jade knows a lot about a lot of things, everything but the normal kind. "I spent loads of time in libraries growing up... Especially during the winter!" I raise an eyesbrow.

"Oh really? Why?" She eyes gaze down as she plays with the strings on the blanket. "Why Jade?"

"Because it was warm..." She says shyly. I instantly mentally slap myself in the face. I'm sounding like such a prick and completely forgetting how Jade spent her childhood. I put the book down on the table next to the couch and lean down, picking Jade up in my arms.

"Come here..." I lay her next to me, and she instantly curls into my side, laying her head on my chest. I reach behind, grabbing the book and opening to the first page again. I prop my head up on a pillow, making sure not to move Jade from her comfortable position. Once I'm all set, I begin to read. "Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus' son Achilles..." Jade stops me now and then with questions on the characters and such.

"So the war started because of a girl?" She asks. I chuckle and correct her.

"Not just any girl Jade. Helen of Troy. The most beautiful woman in the world, the face that-"

"Launched a thousand ships, yeah yeah I get it." She pauses and I start to read again, but she interupts me. "It's just... Why would Menelaus do something so stupid?" Her green eyes gaze up at me with complete ignorance.

"He loved her Jade." I say calmly, amused by her lack of understanding.

"Yeah well she didn't love him, otherwise she wouldn't have run off with Paris." She huffs under her breath. I let her win this round. As soon as I get to the battle scenes, Jade instantly becomes intruigued. She comments on their skills and loves their stradegies. the one thing she didn't understand was Achilles and why he was unstoppable. "Wait... so he can't die?"

"No, you see, when he was little, his mom, Thetis, dipped him in the River Styx, making him invincible."

"Except his heal?"

"Yep. That's where the saying 'Achilles' Heal' comes from. It was his only weakness." She doesn't question anything else the entire time. When I finally finish, I rest the book down on my chest next to Jade's face. She's gazing at the fire. I place the book on the table and start to close my eyes.

"Aaron?" Jade is resting her chin on my chest, staring at me with droopy eyes.

"Yeah Jade."

"What's your Achilles' Heal?" This question echoes in my head.

"Gosh Jade, I don't know." She closes her eyes and rests her head down again. I've thought about it, and my family had been the answer for a long time, but now they are gone. Jade nuzzles into my neck and I smile, rethinking the question. Jade is here, she's been here for me for awhile now. I watch her as she falls asleep. Her eyelashes cast small shadows onto her soft cheeks, her lips frozen into a tiny grin. She looks vulnerable and beautiful, not like the girl who could kill an entire city.

What is my Achilles' Heal? I ask myself again. I realize it isn't a what, but a who. Strands of green hair fall in front of her face, and her nose twitches. I smile and brush her hair back behind her ear and lean down, gently pressing my lips to her forehead. A subconscious smile forms on her lips as I run my thumb over her cheeks. She's my best friend. I'm not sure how I love her yet, but I know for sure that I do. When I know my answer, I start to chew on the inside of my cheek, nervous that I'm wrong or that it's wrong. Either way, I give her my answer, hoping that she is asleep and won't remember it in the morning, even though it is the absolute truth. "You."
