Chapter Nine: Revealed
Revealed
Aaron's POV
I wake up feeling great. Jade isn't next to me, then I realize that I'm late to talk to the man in the wheelchair, Professor Xavier I think. It doesn't phase me though, this is the first time I havn't had nightmares since the incident. Maybe it has something to do with Jade sleeping right next to me. I leave the warm covers of my bed and stretch my arms behind me. Wearily, I walk to the dresser to find drawers full of T-shirts, jeans, and sweatpants. Throwing on a somewhat old looking black shirt and a dark blue pair of jeans, I open my door and peer into the hallway. There are doors on the left and right side, stretching down for what seems to be a mile. Amazing.
I'm downstairs before Jade is, and I cannot explain the awkwardness. The guy named Logan glares at me and I feel a little uncomfortable with his death glare. Still not worse than Jade's, I remind myself. She finally bursts through the door, her hair neatly pulled back into a pontytail that leads into a long braid that dropped to her mid-back. She's wearing black yoga pants and a black tank top. She's much more sporty than I am I guess... me just wearing a black T-shirt and jeans.
"Sorry I'm late." She breathed heavily. I raise an eyebrow at her, wondering where she couldve been.
"Very punctual I see," The Professor jokes as Jade sits down on the leather couch, "Ahh well, let's begin." I stop them there.
"Wait. What?" Storm places her hand on my shoulder reassuringly, which isn't as weird as it should be.
"Do not worry Aaron, we are just going to profile you."
"Meaning..."
"You will tell us your abilities and we will observe and learn how exactly we can help you." Storm gives me a small smile. Jade wasn't so sure about this.
"I don't see the point... how will this help us?" She's out of her seat now, using her hands to talk, which she does all the time. If you ask me, she's always been a bit over dramatic.
"Hold on," I say, "just give me a second with her." I pull Jade by the arm into the hall. "Please... just go along with this." She gives me a look and crosses her arms.
"But... they... can't help me."
"Yes they can! Look around you Jade, there are so many mutants here and it's all under control!" I can tell she's still unsure, mostly because of her expression. I'm going to name that look just because I see it so often. "Listen Jade, how about I make you a deal." She becomes interested and raises one eyebrow. No matter what, Jade cannot resist a deal.
"I'm listening."
"We will go along with this for a week, and if you still don't feel like this does anything for you then you can leave." She starts to nod then stops, just then realizing my words.
"You mean we leave right?" Her voice almost cracks as I shake my head.
"No. I'm not like you Jade, I can't roam around, I need someplace to call home... I'm sorry but if this doesn't work out then it's goodbye." She looks at me with her big green eyes and it makes me feel guilty, but hey, I'm trying the whole tough love thing. "So if you're unwilling to try then go ahead." And with that I walk into the room. Would I really let her leave without me? Probably not, but she doesn't know that.
Storm's POV
Aaron walks back into the room without Jade. "Where is Ja-"
"Not coming." He states quickly. He sits down and hangs his head, looking down at his hands, running his thumb from his palm to his wrist repeatedly.
"Huh hmm." A small cough like sound comes from the doorway. Aaron looks back as Jade knocks on the door and gives a light smile. He's smiling and I swear there's something there.
"So if you two are ready we would like to begin." I pull out a pad of paper and pen. When neither of the two answer I decide to take them into one of our training rooms. The Professor watched from a room above. "Okay I have a feeling it will be easier for you two to show me so Jade you shall start."
The girl bravely walks over to the weights. "I'm kinda strong."
"Okay honey. Logan, give her some weights." I'm guessing he is still holding a grudge from last night, because a 100 Ib. weight comes flying at her head. Jade's left hand shoots up in a firm motion, and the weight stops in her hand like it hit a wall.
"Toss me another one will ya." She says rather sassily, and arrogantly, but Logan deserves that. I can't help but crack a smile as Logan stops in his tracks, completely caught off guard. "That is, if they aren't too heavy for you." Aaron snickers and Logan turns a light shade of red, picking up two more 50 Ib. weights and tossing them towards her a little harder this time. She catches them easily and shuffles them around in her hands.
"What a stud." Aaron says jokingly. The girl doesn't blush, but she does give off a sense of embarassment.
"I can lift more... But you get the idea."
"Actually we need to know the maximum but we can always find that out later in training." I look to the boy and he steps forward. He takes a deep breath and cracks his knuckles, making the girl roll her eyes. Before I know it he's disappeared and I can see straight through to the wall. "Ahh I see. Invisibility."
We continue back and forth. Jade has very good aim in which she uses to throw knives and other objects. She uses her abnormal strength to back up these throws, breaking a few target boards. She is also very agile, flexible, and fast. And to tip it all off, she is a very good fighter. She has many skills and tactics that not many people can preform. Aaron can produce force fields. He also has the ability to heal himself at a much quicker rate that the normal human. Not as fast as Logan's ability, but pretty quick. It seems that under his skin is a layer of his shield causing him to be less prone to injuries. The Professor and I are both impressed. The girl worries us though.
Jade's POV
Just as we are leaving and about to turn in for the night, I hear a buzzing noise. I close my eyes and remove a bobby pin from my hair. I throw it in the direction of the buzzing and pin a fly to the wall by its wings. Storm and the Professor give eachother a look that tells me they are talking by mind again. That really bugs me actually. Why can't they just talk about how weird I am to my face? I am lead over to a wooden chair in a round room.
"Please take a seat Jade." The dude in the wheelchair says promptly. I reluctantly do as he says. The woman with white hair walks over to me with a black bandana an I immediately know what they plan to do. She gives me directions as I take it from her hands and tie it around my eyes.
"Logan, Aaron, and I are going to stand in different corners of the room-"
"It's a circle. There are no corners." I say under my breath. Storm lets out a small sigh and I laugh to myself. I'm going to be the biggest pain in the ass for them. Aaron's eyes gaze at me with a sad look and I feel a little guilty.
"We will stand at the edges of the room," She pauses for me to correct her but I let her continue. "And you are going to tell us what you sense." I nod. Seems simple enough. Small footsteps echo in my ears off the the right. They seem light and focused. I point in the direction of the sound.
"Storm." The movement stops and I listen for more. A peculiar stench hits me first. The smell of oil, gasoline, and pine trees is coming from my back left. I turn abruptly and hear a pause in someone's breath. "Logan." Only Aaron now. "Alright kid, where are ya." I don't hear him, and I don't smell him. Well you most certainly aren't going to taste him Jade. I move my foot out in front of me, trying to find the chair. I stand up on it, searching for the air condition currents. They are coming from in front of me and I drop to the floor, searching for that same feeling. When I take a small step to the left, it stops as if something is blocking it from me. "Found you." I rip off the bandana to see Aaron standing there with his hands in his back pockets with a smug look on his face. I did all of that without sight, which I tend to do sometimes. It's almost a game for me.
Storm turns to me, "It seems that you have extraordinary senses Jade." Well no dip Sherlock. "How long have you known this? Have you always been aware?" She sounds as if she's hit the jackpot, and the jackpot is me. I don't like being talked about like a show dog or some great new find.
"Of course I have, duh. I've known about all these things. I've known that I'm screwed up for awhile now!" And I just snap, letting all my anger go. I feel my eyes starting to burn as the familiar glow is about to return when Aaron puts his arm around me. I look at him. I don't want to lose my only friend, plus I promised I'd try at this. I sigh, "I'm sorry... I have a bit if a nasty temper sometimes. I can't control it."
Aaron laughs. He actually laughs. I look at him surprisingly as do Storm and the Professor. He just laughs and ruffles my hair. "Oh we know you have a bad temper Jade. Trust me, we know, I just can't believe you admitted actually it." With that, he walks up the metal steps and disappears down the hallway, heading up to his room to go to bed. I don't like the feeling of being alone with these people so I follow him, but the door to his room is closed. My shoulders drop and I turn around, going to my own room. I guess I'm sleeping alone tonight. I slap myself in the face, realizing how pathetic I'm sounding. Come on Jade, you slept alone for nine years, why is it all of a sudden becoming an issue. I lay on my bed, not even bothering to get underneath the covers. It's going to be a long day tomorrow. They are going to put us through some tests. Good luck to them. They're going to need it.
