24. The Final Round

It's a new day, Levi realized as he gazed over the fresh snow from his bedroom window. Last night, after his talk with Matteo, Levi found it extremely difficult to fall asleep. Too many questions ran through his mind, each fighting to dominate his thoughts.

After a couple of hours of tossing around restlessly in the bed, Levi had given up and settled on the 2-seater sofa by the window and propped his feet up on the small table in front of it.

He was so lost in his thoughts, that he hadn't even noticed how the hours went by as night bled into another day. It wasn't until he saw the sky turn a beautiful, deep Blue shade that he realized this.

It will all be over today...

Levi would never admit it, but he was extremely anxious about today's meeting. The killer, the motives, the incidents leading up to the murders, everything would be revealed today. All he needed was the final piece of information from his colleagues back in the US. That would be the final nail in the coffin.

Levi stretched on the sofa and closed his eyes for a few minutes. However, he slowly felt himself slipping into a deep sleep as he felt the sunshine upon his face.

Robert briskly walked towards Levi's room with an envelope clutched tightly in his hand. Reaching in front of his destination, he took a deep breath to calm his nerves.

He felt as if he was in school again and the results day was upon him. Robert clearly remembered how nervous he always was to receive his result. The cold sweating, tension knotting in his stomach...

The detectives had told him that today will be the day when it all goes down. A few hours later, police would be on standby to make the arrests as the detectives slowly unravel the mystery, layer by layer.

Just thinking about the fact that he was under the same roof as a murderer chilled him.

Robert felt the weight of the envelope in his hands as he recalled the reason he was standing before Levi's room. Sighing, he composed himself and knocked on the door sharply.

After a few moments passed by without any sound coming from the opposite side of the door, he knocked again, louder this time. Satisfied when he heard shuffling sounds from inside the room, he braced himself for his interaction with Levi.

Clever and brilliant as Levi was, he always made Robert nervous as he never knew what to expect.

On the other side of the door, Levi slowly opened his eyes, coming back to his senses. He blinked slowly as his vision adjusted to the darkness inside the room. Darkness?

Levi knew he had fallen asleep but was it already night?

He turned his head and spotted a sliver of light peeking through the heavy curtains. Seeing this, Levi felt a smile tug at his lips as he realized that Charlotte had shut the curtains.

He had a soft pillow tucked under his head and a fuzzy blanket draped over the length of his body. He was still half lying on the sofa, only this time, it was much comfier, all thanks to his wife. Speaking of whom, he couldn't find her in the room.

A knock sounded at the door as Levi groaned and reluctantly dragged himself out of the warmth of the blanket and made his way to the door before wrenching it open.

Levi found himself squinting at Robert as his eyes adjusted to the bright light in the hallway. He looked at the hotel manager for two seconds, before concluding that he was nervous.

Robert shuffled on his feet and gave Levi a strained smile. He felt the detective assessing him as his critical eye did a quick sweep of his profile.

"Good afternoon, Sir. This just got delivered," Robert said as he handed him the envelope.

Levi frowned slightly as he accepted the envelope. Afternoon?

"What time is it?" Levi asked, his voice thick from his sleep.

"Ten minutes to 12, Sir," Robert replied after glancing at his watch quickly.

Levi nodded slowly as he tore open the envelope and scanned the contents. It was Carter's autopsy results. "And where's my wife?" He asked distractedly.

"In the library. She told me not to disturb you unless it was very important. And, well, this report just got delivered so I brought it straight to you."

"What do you mean it got delivered? Matteo isn't here?" Levi frowned.

"No, Sir. He called to say he'll be here at 6 pm sharp but sent the report over."

"Hmm, alright," Levi replied, thinking he had more time to recollect his thoughts and wait for the intel from the US. "Did my wife eat?"

"Yes, everyone did," Robert said as he recalled how awkward the breakfast had been.

"Alright, thank you for this," Levi said, pointing to the autopsy report. "Can you please inform everyone to be seated in the common room by six?"

Levi didn't miss how the hotel manager nervously gulped before acknowledging him and leaving him alone.

Levi shut the door before going to the sofa again and pulling the curtains open, letting the light flood the room. Settling back in the blanket, he studied the contents of the report carefully this time, going over each and every detail.

As he got to the end of the report, Levi had clutched the paper too hard, almost tearing it. A mixture of a scowl and frown marred his face, confusion swimming in his eyes.

Carter was choked... but how? Levi was sure there hadn't been any bruises on Carter's neck, except for the old ones Eric had given.

He sat there, glaring at the report before an idea struck him that took his breath away. Of course, how could I be so dumb?

As soon as he realized the cause of death, a wave of sadness hit Levi as he realized what Carter went through. Shaking the feeling away, he took out his phone and sent a message to his colleagues, highlighting that he needed the desired information on an urgent basis.

There was no use in mourning over Carter's murder. But what Levi could do, was reveal the murderer and put an end to all of this. Now determined than ever to see the killer behind bars.

It was a few hours later, when Charlotte and Levi were in their room, having lunch, when Levi's felt his phone buzz in his pocket, signaling an email.

Charlotte opened her mouth to protest when Levi left the lunch for his phone but decided against it. He wouldn't listen to her anyway, specially at a time when they were at the brink of a huge revelation and things were the most critical.

Levi's eyes scanned the document attached in the email as his heart-rate started to pick up, all his theories and suspicions confirming. I knew it!

"What does it say?" Charlotte asked after a few minutes of silence.

Levi shifted his shocked eyes towards her before putting away the phone and telling her everything. When he was done, Charlotte's eyes had grown double in size as she shook her head, trying to wrap her mind around it.

"Hey," Scarlett said as she entered Anthony's room with Emma in tow. Anthony was sitting on his bed, spending the last moments of peace.

"Hi," Anthony replied somberly, not looking at them.

"It's almost 6..." Scarlett sighed deeply. "I don't know what's going to happen when we go down. Aren't you nervous?" she asked Anthony as she took in his stoic features.

"Look how White his face is, Scar," Emma said as she chewed on her bottom lip. She made her way over to Anthony and sat down beside him.

"In just a couple of hours, we're going to know who killed Eric and Carter," Anthony said softly. He looked up and studied Emma and Scarlett.

Scarlett's dark circles were prominent, her eyes hollow and scared. Whereas Emma's hair was messily braided, her face pale and void of any makeup.

Struggling and failing to come up to say something, they all instead stared at each other quietly, the tension growing thick with each passing second. Just the thought that was in the company of a murderer made their blood run cold as a heavy, dangerous feeling settled deep in their stomachs.

Soon, the aura of the room had turned from awkward to cold and dark as everyone shifted uneasily on their feet. Scarlett was the first one to break the silence.

"I think we should go to the common room," Scarlett cleared her throat before saying. "Detective Matteo is going to be here soon."

Emma numbly nodded, "Okay," she whispered, agreeing only because she couldn't stand to be in the room any longer.

Together, they made their way down the stairs and found themselves in front of the common room door. Their hearts were already rapidly beating in their chests.

Emma was standing between Scarlett and Anthony, and couldn't help but extend her hands to clasp her friend's in each one. She gave them both a squeeze, releasing a heavy sigh.

Scarlett squeezed back while Anthony's hand just felt limp and cold.

"Let's go," Scarlett said softly, looking at Emma, eyes already brimming with tears.

"Wait! I-I just want to say something," Anthony began hesitatingly, looking directly into both their eyes, "I don't know what's going to happen in there... my heart refuses to accept the fact that one of us did it, it's just so... unbelievable." He released a heavy sigh.

His feelings were scattered all over the place. Anthony was torn between comforting the girls and the fact that one of them was a murderer. Choosing his next words wisely, he said, "This is the last time the three of us are going to be together. After we walk through this door... it's over. I don't know who killed our friends but I hope they rot in the deepest pits of hell." Anthony clenched his jaw hard.

At the sudden change in Anthony's attitude, Scarlett was shocked, to say the least. But it was the least of her worries right now.

There were secrets behind the door, and the group fully intended to find out.

Emma didn't say a single word as she slid the door open and stepped inside, the other two following suit. She was expecting an empty room but found Matteo, Levi, and Charlotte already sitting on the sofas by the fireplace.

They were talking rapidly in hushed whispers, and the sight had Scarlett's stomach twist in panic.

Scarlett, Emma, and Anthony made their way to the same area as the whispers died down abruptly. As soon as they took their seats, Ella and Mark also entered the common hall, looking unbothered as ever.

Once they were all seated, Levi slowly looked over each one of them before saying the words that marked the beginning of doom.

"Are you ready for the final round?"
