21. More Questions

"How do you know it's fake?!" Scarlett demanded, her voice hoarse and low.

Levi looked at her for a long time, making her queasy as the fire in her eyes died down and she shifted on her feet.

"It's too neat," Levi commented slowly, not sure if he really wanted to share anything.

"And what the hell is that supposed to mean?" Scarlett said, gritting her teeth. If she didn't get answers, and soon, then she would smash Levi's perfect face, knocking all of his teeth off.

"Wait-" Emma interrupted Scarlett. "If the letter is fake, then Carter didn't kill himself, which means..." she inhaled shakily.

"Which means the killer is still among us," Anthony mumbled to himself, eyes slightly wide.

"Naturally." Levi scoffed.

But everybody was too busy looking at Anthony, who had shifted to one corner of the room, near the door. He was leaning against the wall, arms crossed in front of him.

Scarlett and Emma continued to look at him even as he straightened and cleared his throat. They both didn't expect Anthony to speak up since he had been extremely quiet since Eric's death.

So when he did speak, it was like a shadow had spoken. And he might as well be one. Ever since Eric's untimely death, Anthony had been nothing but an empty vessel, a hollow shell.

Simply put, a ghost of a human.

When the words that Anthony spoke slowly sunk in, Scarlett's eyes widened in horror.

There is a killer among us.

She stared at Emma, her own face grief and horror-stricken.

"Great! This is just great!" Emma shouted, throwing her hands in frustration, slowly losing control of her emotions.

Levi sighed and squeezed his eyes shut. He didn't need any more drama than there already was. He turned to look at Carter's dead body again, eyes lingering on the hand dangling from under the sheet.

A shiver raced up his spine and he shuddered involuntarily.

Carter's death had taken a toll on Levi whether he admitted it or not. When he had first interrogated him, he saw turmoil and sadness swimming in his eyes. The hard lines on his face even though he was just 28.

Levi saw determination, he saw drive, he saw himself in Carter's eyes.

Running a hand through his hair, he turned to face Scarlett and Emma, their sight suddenly too irritating to handle.

"Idiots..." Levi muttered, shaking his head slightly. He was slightly disappointed nobody heard him say that.

Couldn't even figure out why the letter is fake.

With so many emotions surging through his body, he was primed and ready to launch some snarky remarks should the need arise.

Charlotte knew the moment when it got too much to handle for Levi. his left forefinger had started twitching furiously, which was his biggest tell even though Levi denying such a fact.

Charlotte felt her feet carry her forward before stopping behind Levi. "Let's go," she whispered. Levi didn't need to turn to tell who it was. He also didn't need to to be repeated twice.

"Yes, let's."

"Hey, you can't just leave like that!" Emma cried out.

Levi tilted his head, his glare intensifying as his eyes bore into Emma. "Watch me." He turned his back to her and started for the door.

A hand shot out and curled around Levi's shoulder in a strong grip just as he was about to leave Carter's room with Charlotte. Levi suddenly halted in his steps, startled by the quick action.

"Tell me how you know the letter is fake," Anthony pleaded, bringing his face so close to Levi's that he only had to whisper in order for Levi to hear.

A frown slowly took over Levi's face as his eyebrows pulled together in concentration. He only shook his head a couple of inches before Anthony gripped his shoulder tighter, his eyes drowning in desperation.

"Please," he whispered.

Ignoring the pain shooting in Levi's shoulder, he searched Anthony's eyes, still frowning, before giving up. "His hand and the letter are too pristine." Levi stated.

"What-" Anthony began but Levi had already shrugged his shoulder off Anthony's grasp and left Carter's room.

Defeated, Anthony turned his head and looked at Carter's left hand peeking from beneath the sheets. His jaw hurt from clenching too tight and so did his eyebrows because of being pulled together in an intense manner.

Levi's words echoed in Anthony's mind again, and again.

His hand and letter were too pristine.

Anthony racked his brain to make sense of Carter's word.

Too pristine, pristine... pristine.

And then it hit him.

Shit.

***

It was 8 pm and completely dark in the Schilthorn valley by the time Levi finally settled on his bed and took a very long, very deep breath, before exhaling slowly.

"Tough day?" Charlotte grinned at him, trying to lighten the mood.

"Oh no, not at all," Levi waved a hand in front of him in exaggeration.

That's when a sharp and quick knock sounded at the wooden door, the sound followed by Levi groaning.

Sighing for the umpteenth time that day, Levi dragged himself out of the warm and cosy bed and made his way to the door.

He pulled the door open to reveal Robert in his crisp and neatly dressed uniform, professional as ever. Levi felt just the tiniest bit of tension leave his body. He thought he would come face to face with Anthony, Emma, or Scarlett and be forced to listen to them pester him with stupid, obvious questions.

"Good evening sir," Robert said, "I have the... um, information you requested for." Robert pressed the sealed envelope in Levi's hand, his mouth molding into a grimace as he felt guilty for what he had to do.

Levi looked at the old man warily before looking down and ripping open the envelope, examining its content.

The envelope contained a paper which consisted of all the guests staying at the hotel, their passport numbers and ID card numbers as well.

Levi had requested for this information, or more like demanded it from Robert right before he called everybody down to the common room to reveal how Eric was killed and who the culprit was.

It was the perfect opportunity as it gave Robert enough time to go through the guests documents and record all the information Levi needed.

"Thank you for this," Levi said, waving the envelope in his hand and managing a smile as he started to close the door.

"Sir, wait!" Robert said hastily but then recomposed himself.

"Yes?" Levi asked, harnessing all his patience.

"Sir, um..." Robert said, fiddling with this thumbs behind his back. He knew Levi would be extremely pissed at what he was about to say.

"What?" Levi snapped. His thin patience was dancing on an even thinner ice now.

"Detective Matteo is here, Sir..." Robert winced slightly as the words left his mouth.

Looking up, Levi pinched his eyes shut and released a low groan. A couple of seconds later, he straightened, thanked Robert and then closed the door a little harder than necessary.

Reaching the bed, he flopped down on it, bouncing a little before lying completely still. He turned his face into the pillow and groaned into it.

"What?" Charlotte questioned as she saw her husband being a baby.

Levi mumbled something incoherent which was muffled by the pillow.

"You know I can't hear you," Charlotte said. Such a child.

"Your hunky detective Matteo is here," Levi's voice was borderline whiny now.

"But didn't you call him today yourself?" Charlotte asked, giving him the You bought it upon yourself, look.

"But I forgot he was supposed to come!" Levi said irritated with himself, "You know what with all the second murder and all." He rolled his eyes.

"Lets just go," Levi said defeated. The sooner he met him, the sooner he got rid of him.

"Alright!"

Just as Levi opened the door, he saw Robert there, hand suspended in the air as if to knock.

"Robert!" Levi said surprise, eyebrows shooting up in his hairline. "Do you need something?" he asked darkly.

"No, I came with some information. I don't know if it's worth anything, but I thought you should know," Robert said.

When Levi didn't reply or acknowledge, Charlotte stepped in and encouragingly asked him to go on.

"A few hours ago when you asked for me to bring my keys to Carter's room, I got a little late. It's because my original set of keys is missing since yesterday night." Robert said with conviction.

"You sure you didn't misplace it?"

"I may be old, but I know what I keep and where I keep it," said Robert seriously.

Levi nodded his head slowly, "You just confirmed what I already knew."

"Carter's suicide was staged. And somebody is trying very hard to hide their crimes," Levi said.

"Well, we better go. Detective useless must be waiting," Levi said, biting back a grin.

Charlotte shook his head in disapproval despite the smile playing across her lips as she followed him into the common room, where Detective Matteo was already perched, a steaming cup of coffee in his hand.

Levi sat opposite to Matteo, picking up a cup of tea, savoring it's warmness.

"Ready for the final round, Detective?"
