Chapter 19: Rooftop confessions and conversations
"Woah." I muttered as I gazed over the city.
"Yeah, woah." Xander replied as he sat on the edge, his feet dangling ten floors from the ground.
"It's... beautiful." I said.
It sounds cliche, but the way the sun sets in the city, illuminating the buildings and cars below was breathtaking. The splash of colors was absolutely amazing.
"C'mere." He said and pat the space next to him.
"So you can push me off? No thanks."
He laughed, "Have a little faith in me, would ya?"
I hesitantly sat down next to him, with a good enough distance, of course.
"Come a little bit closer." He told me.
"Why?" I questioned.
"Because..." His gaze shifted from the city to me, "I don't know if I know you yet."
"A bit poetic."
"Oh, only for you, sweetheart." He replied.
"Sweetheart?" I asked with a smile, "I think that suits me more than sweetie."
"Crazie suits you most." He mumbled, though I couldn't hear it.
"What'd you say?" I asked.
"Nothing, just thinking out loud." He replied.
"Well, why are we here?" I asked him.
"I just needed to talk to you privately. I usually don't take anyone else with me here and nobody else bothers to come here."
"Oh wow, privately. No witnesses, is that how you roll?" I joked.
His eyes softened, "Dayana, I would never hurt you."
I chuckled nervously, "I was kidding."
"I'm not."
I looked back the the view, "What do you need to tell me?"
"I'm sorry."
I glanced at him to see that he was looking down.
"For what?"
"For everything. You might not understand now, but I've done so many wrong things to you. I've hurt you, and trust me when I say that every time, every single time I did, it killed me. I just want to hold you and protect you from anything that'll take you away from me."
"Xander..."
"I also want to say thank you."
I stayed quiet and stared at him as he stared at the busy city.
"Thank you for giving me happiness. In the mere moments we were together, thank you. You may not remember them, but I do. The memories I have with you are irreplaceable. So many girls, Dayana, so many girls and none of them had the power to wipe you off my mind. I just want to say thank you for giving me so many beautiful memories. Thank you."
I was speechless. He just apologized and thanked me for things I don't remember.
How should I react?
"I..."
He looked at me, sincerity evident in his eyes, "From now on, we'll start from scratch. So, hi. I'm Xander Peter Bryer, ace of Cold Blooded Gang and your schoolmate. Nice to meet you."
How can a guy be so sweet?
"I'm Dayana Autumn Enriquez. I'm just a girl with amnesia, and still trying to get used to my surroundings. Nice to meet you, too." I replied.
"Honestly, I don't want to confuse you anymore, so whatever we had in the past, I won't mention it after we leave this rooftop." He told me, giving me a half-smile.
I smiled back at him, "Thank you."
"So ask me anything you want to know now, because when we leave, we'll only be friends who just met."
I sucked in a breath, "Wow, honestly, I have a lot of questions."
"Well, ask away.".
"How long were we together?" I blurted out.
His smile morphed to a smaller, more sheepish one.
He coughed, "Don't laugh, okay?"
"Why?"
"We were together for..."
"A year? A month? Six months? A week? A day?"
"For almost an hour."
I looked at him blankly, "Seriously?"
"Yeah... Not really something I'm proud of."
"We lasted for an hour?" I asked, "And yet you claim to be so happy with me?"
"It isn't exactly easy to be together when you disappear for two years." He argued.
"Oh... we got together just before I was—"
"Don't think about it too much." He told me.
"Well here's another question; do you still have feelings for me?"
He laughed, a light-hearted laugh that echoed in my ears, "Sweetheart, lifetimes ago, it was you."
"And now?"
"It's still you."
I felt my cheeks getting warmer.
"But I'm willing to push aside my feelings for you. If you feel uncomfortable with me, just tell me. If you think that we're better off friends, just tell me and I'll accept it. If ever, if you feel that same old beat in your heart, tell me and I won't hesitate." He told me, giving me a pat on the head.
I smiled at the action. He reminded me of Travis.
"Well since most of my questions were wiped away due to the fact that we were together for only an hour, I only have two questions left." I told him.
"Shoot."
"Before getting together, what were we?"
"You were... my trainer. I actually just accidentally saw you killing someone while you were on a mission and I was just lucky that my dad was a former leader of CBG. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you, literally."
I laughed at the last part.
"Well, last question then."
"What is it?"
"What's your favorite memory of us?" I blurted out once more.
I bit my lower lip in embarrassment. I knew I wouldn't remember it, but just the thought of him actually cherishing something that happened between us makes me feel nice.
"That time you were teaching me how to shoot an enemy properly." He smiled, remembering it.
-
I smiled as I remembered that memory all too well.
"So, Xander, this is what we're gonna be doing today." She said with a giggle, tossing a pistol at me.
"What's this?" I asked.
"It's a candy cane." She replied sarcastically, "It's a gun, you idiot."
I stared at it in bewilderment, "Like an actual gun?"
She did that thing with her tongue and let out another giggle.
"I'm gonna be teaching you how to shoot an enemy." She told me.
"Okay. How?" I asked, still surprised with the gun in my hand.
"First, just hold the gun properly." She instructed and I did what I was told, "Now, just pull the trigger."
"Like, right now?" I asked.
"Well, yeah. I need to know how much you know about handling guns if I'm gonna teach you." She said with a giggle.
I closed my eyes and pulled the trigger. That all too loud sound of the gun and its recoil hurt my head a bit.
I opened one of my eyes and saw Dayana kneeling to the ground with her head down.
"Oh my gosh, are you okay?!" I exclaimed and rushed over to her.
She was clutching her chest and looked up at me with wide eyes.
"Xander... you just shot me..." She muttered.
"I know, I know, I'm sorry. I—"
"With love, baby!" She exclaimed and let go of her chest, showing that she was actually holding a plastic arrow that had a heart on it, just like how they represent Cupid's arrow.
She howled a laugh, "That was a fake pistol I got from Leon on Valentine's Day. Let's start some real training."
I shook my head.
This girl is gonna be the death of me.
"Xander?" Dayana asked, snapping me back to reality.
"Huh?"
"I said, what happened back then?" She asked me.
"Just a few Cupid's arrows shot." I replied with a grin.
"Care to ex—"
A roar from below cut her off. We both stood up and I looked down to see that hounds were unleashed on the grounds.
"Hounds? Why are they outside?" I thought out loud.
"Hounds?"
Huh, this sounds familiar.
"We better go." I said and grabbed her hand, quickly getting inside.
Just as we were about to get in the elevator, a voice made us stop in our tracks.
"Where have you been?"
Cliffhanger? Maybe? I don't know. Who do you guys think it is?
Oh wait, I think you guys are forgetting something.
