Chapter 48
"Cana are you crazy!?" Erza yelled, "we're in a burning building that's about to collapse in a few minutes and you expect us to use the elevator?"
"You got a better idea Erza because I would love to hear one right now." Cana ran to the elevator door, "help me open this."
"You can't be serious," Erza said. She watched as Jellal followed behind Cana, "Jellal this is too dangerous."
"Well it's better than burning alive."
Cana handed Luna over to Erza, "if you're not going to help then at least carry her."
She groaned, "fine. I still don't like this plan."
"You don't have to like it," Cana winked. She looked back at Jellal, "you ready?" She asked.
He nodded. Both of them with all their strength pulled at each door, barely making it budge.
Jellal pulled harder, "It's not budging." Jellal stood back in front of Erza, "move Cana."
"For what?"
"I'm gonna open the doors."
Cana stood back watching behind them, "the fires spreading faster. We need to hurry."
Jellal took a deep breath staring at the door, letting his power run through him. He lifted his hand letting a surge of power blast through the doors, completely destroying them.
Cana patted his back, "nice work."
He nodded, following them into the elevator.
Cana pressed the button for the basement, but the elevator wouldn't budge. She then clicked any button to see if any of the floors would work, "It's dead."
"How are we supposed to get out of here then?" Erza said, bringing Luna closer to her jacket, shielding her from the smoke.
Cana looked out the elvator doors to see the fire was almost on them, "think Cana..." She whispered. She glanced up to see the hatch that lead to the outside of elevator. She gasped.
"What do you think we should do?" Jellal asked.
She looked at him with worry in her eyes, "you're really not going to like it."
"Lucy, it's getting hotter in here," Gray said, fanning himself.
"Maybe because the buildings on fire. Just a thought." She struggled lifting Gray down the stairs in his wheelchair. She stopped for a second to wipe the sweat off her face, "if I keep doing this I won't have any energy left."
"If I could walk this wouldn't be an issue," He groaned, feeling his side.
She saw him lift his shirt to see more blood oozing from his wound. She gasped, "Gray it's infected."
"Yeah Juvia told me this morning," he winced in pain, putting his shirt down.
"If we don't get you to a hospital, that wound can kill you."
"Well that's not an option right now."
"If I could call my friend maybe she could help us," She said, "but first we need to get out of here." She continued dragging his chair down the stairs until they reached a door.
She looked at the sign, "the basement. Hopefully there's a way out through here."
She opened the door, revealing the foul odor of waste and burning flesh. Half the ceiling was collapsed making the room almost pitch black.
Gray covered his nose, "that smell."
"Yeah I know," She said covering her nose. She glanced around the room until she saw a blinking red light.
The exit.
"The exit!" She yelled. She grabbed the handles of the chair pushing him toward the door.
Light blinded their eyes as they stepped on the charred grass. They breathed in the fresh, trying to get as much in them as possible.
"Lucy! Gray!" They both turned to the outburst.
Gray squinted his eyes so he could make out the person running toward them, "Levy?" He whispered.
She grabbed Lucy and Gray into a hug, "I'm so glad you guys are ok."
Lucy hugged back, "so are we." They broke the hug walking toward the car, "so are we the last ones?"
Levy nodded, "no, Cana, Luna, Jellal, and Erza are still in there. I thought they would come out with you guys."
"What?!" Lucy yelled, "what are they doing in there?"
"I don't know," Levy said, "but they don't have much time left."
"You have to be kidding me Cana!" Jellal yelled, "you've came up with some crazy ideas, but this one is the absolute craziest."
"Well what other plan do you have in mind Jellal!? Because our options right now are limited."
"I doubt they're that limited to the point where we cut off the wires holding the elevator up!"
"Guys!" Erza yelled, "the fire is right on us! We have to go now."
"We don't have any other options Jellal." She turned to Erza, "use your sword to cut the wires on my word."
Erza nodded, handing over Luna. She jumped up through the hatch, leading her to the top of the elevator. A flashing light, revealed her blade, "ready!" She yelled.
Cana turned behind her, facing Jellal, "you better find something to hold onto."
Jellal held onto one of the rails, "shit. I never thought this was going to be the way I go out."
"You're not going to die yet Jellal," Cana put Luna inside her shirt, keeping her secure while holding onto the same rail, "now Erza!"
Using her blade she sliced through the thick wires, sending them down at incredible speed.
"What the hell! How are we supposed to stop?!" Jellal yelled, barely holding onto the rail.
"If I'm right there should be emergency brakes on the elevator that should stop us!"
"So you don't know if there is or not?!"
"Nope!"
"You and you're freaking ideas Cana!"
The elevator was still falling, making everyone's stomach drop in pain, "When are we going to stop?!Erza yelled.
"We're not stopping Cana!" Jellal yelled, "I think we're almost on the ground!"
"If this thing doesn't slow down now we're all dead!" Erza yelled.
"I don't know what else to do!" Cana yelled, closing her eyes. She put her head in between her legs, gasping for air, "we're going to die." She whispered.
"Cana." She heard the faint whispers call her name, making her eyes shoot open, "Cana."
She heard the whisper again making her shoot up from the ground. She felt her body realizing they weren't falling anymore, "Guys why aren't we-" Her eyes widened as she saw her friends sitting, frozen in time.
She slowly walked toward Erza, kneeling beside her, "What the hell?" She whispered. She felt her shirt, feeling that Luna wasn't there anymore, "Luna!" She stood up, frantically searching for her, "Luna! Where did you go?"
"Here, Cana."
She turned to see Luna standing in front of her, healed, "What happened? Why are they frozen and we aren't?"
"Because I did it."
"What? What are you-"
"I used my power to give us some time."
"You did this?" Luna nodded, "you're a pretty powerful kid to be able to do something like this."
"In a few minutes we are all going to die if you don't do something to stop this."
Cana scoffed, "and what do you suppose I do?! I'm not as smart or as strong as all of you. I'm surprised I even made it this far."
"That's not true Cana. You are the most smart and powerful person I know. You just have to believe in yourself. That's what my mom always tells me."
"Well not all of us are lucky to have such a supportive mom like you." She slid her back against the elevator wall, glancing back at a frozen Erza and Gray, "because of me. I got them killed because of me and my dumb stupid plan."
"When will you stop being so hard on yourself?" Luna kneeled next to her, "it's because of you I made it this far. Because of you I was able to make it to Fairy Tail academy, because of you I got to warn my family about the future, because of you I was able to see my family again." She place her hand in Cana's, "you are so much more than what you believe."
Cana chuckled, "you're smarter than you look kid."
Luna pouted, "What's that supposed to mean!?"
Cana stood up again, stretching out her limbs, "alright, let's figure out what we have to do?"
"I don't have that much time left," Luna said, "but you're the only one who can stop it. Your powers."
"What!?" Cana exclaimed, "I don't know know if my powers can hold this huge elevator."
"Yes it can. If you don't all of us will die and I will have came here for nothing and she will get what she wants."
She sighed, "Veena."
Luna nodded, "We're out of time."
Cana nodded, "I'll try." She smiled, "thanks kid, for believing in me."
Time went forward again sending Cana rushing on the ground with Luna still in her shirt, "Damn kid a nicer warning would be nice."
"We're going to die!" Jellal yelled.
"Shut up Jellal," Cana whispered under her breath.
Cana closed her eyes taking a deep breath, clearing her head until nothing but silence fell upon the her. She placed both her palms on the ground feeling every inch of the space around her. She slowly led her power deep through her body, slowing down the elevator.
"Hey," Jellal said, rising back on his feet, "we're slowing down. Did the emergency brakes kick in?"
"Yeah," Erza said, "What's going on?"
Cana struggles to keep her grip on the elevator. Jellal's sight shot over to Cana, "It's Cana! She's doing this!"
"Cana? She has powers?" Erza said, poking her head through the elevator hatch.
The elevator made a complete stop making Jellal rush over to her, grabbing her shoulders, "you did it Cana! You saved us."
"I-I did huh," She smiled, barely keeping consciousness.
He gasped, "your nose. It's bleeding."
She felt her nose staring at the blood on her hands, "It's nothing. W-We need to get out of here." She stood up, barely able to walk. She leaned her head on the wall, "I can't see anything," She whispered.
Erza jumped from the top of the elevator, "you can barely stand Cana." She took Luna from her shirt, "Jellal try getting the door open."
"On it." A burst of energy surged from his hand sending the doors flying. A stinch hit them as soon as the doors fell, "What is that?" He said, covering his mouth.
"I-I think it's sewage," Cana said. She watched as the blood dripped from her nose to the ground, "shit. I haven't used my powers like this in a long time."
Erza watched as Cana struggled to stand let alone breathe, "Jellal help Cana. I think we're in the basement so we should be able to get out from here if there's an emergency exit."
Jellal grabbed Cana, carrying her on his back, "I gotcha."
She rested her head on his back, "thank you, Jellal."
