Chapter 28
They peeked around the corner, investigating the halls, "there's three guards guarding each side." She whispered, "but I think we can handle it."
"Are you sure Chelia?" Wendy asked, "I don't think this disguise is really the best."
She slid on her mask, "of course I'm sure. Those idiots will fall for anything, even this lame disguise." She peeked one more time, "Alright feet, do your job."
"Don't ever call me feet again."
"Ok... feet." Chelia smirked.
"You're so stupid." Wendy frowned. She walked foward, struggling with every step she took.
"You're wobbling!" Chelia whispered.
"Well at least you're not the one carrying a five hundred pound baby on your shoulders!"
"I'm no where near five hundred pounds first of all! Secondly-"
"Hey you!" They both stiffened to the overly built soldier heading their way.
"Be calm. Just follow my lead." Chelia whispered.
"Why are you not at your post?" He asked.
Chelia cleared her throat, "new orders from the boss, she needs us down in the main building." She said in the deepest voice she could allow her throat to handle.
"I don't remember getting any orders from her." He eyed her suspiciously, "What were these new orders?"
"Oh, um...." Chelia was stumped. Both girls had beads of sweat dripping from their faces, nervous about getting caught, "She said for everyone to head back to base."
"Head back? Why would she tell us to head back when we haven't even gathered all the Meta humans?"
"Hey it's her orders, I'm just doing my job."
"I should call her about this." He picked up his radio, but Chelia snatched it away before he could do anything.
"Are you crazy?! You dare to question her orders?"
"No, I'm just-"
"Just what? Because the only thing I see you doing is trying to get yourself killed. You know how the boss is, ruthless, heartless. She could end you in the blink of an eye." She grabbed his collar and pulled him as close to her face as possible, "do you want to make one silly call that could cost you your life or just follow orders."
He gulped, "I'll inform the others."
She patted his back, "you made the right choice son." She leaned into his ear, "She can be a real nut job if you ask me."
The soldier chuckled, "no kidding, she killed a man out there just a couple hours ago because he didn't catch a bunch of stupid teenagers. But I did hear they took out about three of our armored cars and one kid being able to breath out fire." He sighed, "I'm glad I wasn't out there."
"A kid who breaths fire huh?"
"Yeah crazy right?" He put his radio back on his belt, "they headed into the forest on the other side of the school."
"There's an exit back there?" Wendy thought.
He sighed, "I better muster up the squad before we feel Dr. Veena's wrath."
Chelia chuckled, "we don't want that now do we?"
"Not at all." He laughed. He walked in the opposite direction, disappearing around the corner.
Both girls sighed in relief. Wendy pinched Chelia's leg, "Ouch! What was that for?"
"For almost getting us caught! You should have kept the conversation simple so we could've headed out sooner. Also my legs are about to give out on me."
"At least I got some information." She pouted.
"And what good will that information do for us?"
"What if one of those people is your brother? Didn't you hear him? A kid who can breathe fire? Who else do you know that can do that?"
"I doubt it's him, but there is a chance he did escape." She sighed, "even if he did, I still wouldn't know where to find him."
"We'll just call him."
"My phone is dead."
Chelia groaned, "this is why I tell you charge your phone the night before."
"Well where is your phone?"
"I don't know. I lost it on my side of the room about two weeks ago."
"Well If you cleaned your room like I told you you would probably be able to find stuff."
"I'm too lazy."
"I can see that."
Chelia spotted the exit, "a little to the right and walk ahead." Wendy slowly but steadily walked toward the door, "and besides, that information may have just gave us our escape route."
