The Robot At Large

It was too late.

Peter burst in through the doors to see his parents leaving. They passed the spaceship and found their car. Peter watched them drive away. My parents..gone forever...how can this happen?!...

Peter flopped down on the floor and started crying. Suddenly, a voice beaconed from in front of him--"Peter, you are not alone."

Peter opened his eyes to a scraggly-haired police officer. He could hardly see him through the tears blocking his eyes.

"Since your parents won't take you in, we police will," said the officer. "You will go to the police station, and learn from Sheriff Bladepoint."

Peter moaned, barely managing to take in the words. "Surely, your destiny is to be a superhero," the officer continued. "My name is Zett, and I will take you there."

"You're taking me...where?"

"Can you even hear me?" said Zett. "Since your parents won't take you...we'll take you in and raise you as our ally and son."

Peter finally stood up and faced the officer. "All right--I'm going with you."

As Peter walked away with him, suddenly a stubby hand from the side of the corridor signaled him to follow. He came in to see a tight storage area--and a baby! He was sitting straight up on a bench, and he could speak fluently. He was wearing jeans and a shirt with orange and yellow stripes. His name was Sebiscuits.

I knew there were other mutant babies! Peter thought as he shook the baby's hand. I just knew it!

"Congratulations, Peter," said Sebiscuits. "I hear you get to be a Super!"

"That is true," said Peter.

"Fascinating! Well, what are your powers? Because I can--"

"Peter?" Zett called.

"I've got to go," said Peter.

"Good luck," said Sebiscuits.

At the police station, Peter was learning how to control his powers; and to be agile and adept at his favorite weapon. That weapon was a sword with Peter's own design--an energy shell that could burn opponents and block bullets which will surely be fired at him in the future. Zett and Sheriff Bladepoint led the training, and they loved him as if he was their own son.

About a month after the UFO showdown, Peter was locked in a handstand, using his other hand to lift three crates and stack them on top of each other using his mind. His mind was so powerful it could stretch physically!

"That's it, Peter," Sheriff Bladepoint whispered softly.

Suddenly a hologram transmitter beeped. Peter lost his balance and fell, and the crates fell over. Dazed by his fall, he looked up as Dexter tried to blurt out his message. "Sheriff Bladepoint! We need more men! We're totally outnumbered!"

Sheriff Bladepoint sighed. He had sent a limited number of police on a secret mission, knowing that if he risked them all on a single mission they would be extinct. All the police from the USA lived at this large station ever since a bombing. There were hundreds of police, and he sent 25 of them to the fight against a giant robot terrorizing the city, flanked by an army of robotic soldiers.

"Be sure to bring Peter! We could use him on this one!" Dexter shouted. Just then, laser bolts shot past Dexter and disappeared in the distance. As Dexter exchanged fire, the transmission sputtered, then stopped!

Sheriff Bladepoint asked Peter if he thought he was ready to go on his first mission. Peter agreed and went with Zett to find the battle being waged somewhere in the city.

"And remember our teachings," said Zett. "Just focus and use your powers to your fullest."

"I will," said Peter. He gasped. He counted at least 15 bodies, as the robot gunned down 5 more police with fluid grace. Less than 5 officers were hiding behind a wall, waiting to harass the robotic monster on all sides.

Peter leapt onto the top of the building behind the robot. The robot noticed him and fired its laser cannon. Peter activated his energy shield and deflected the bolts, finally throwing one back at the laser cannon, blowing it up. Then he thrusted his sword into the heart of the robot, listening with glee at the sounds of the sizzling sparks inside its wiring. Apparently he had cut into the robot's core. It groaned as it fell down, hit the street, and exploded moments later.

The 5 police peered out from the wall to see Peter kneeling on the roof, staring at the rubble. He thought victory was in his hands, but he never noticed the now furious cloaked figure hiding in the shadows, holding the remote controlling the robot!
