Chapter Thirty (posted unedited from May 3 2014)

I should've been freaking out, but I felt perfectly calm, as if this happened on a regular basis.

I fell from the ceiling in the palace of the Fire Kingdom, but I was tackled out of my free-fall by two twin bursts of flame. They smashed into me, throwing me into a wall, and I groaned in pain, my vision blurry. I staggered to my feet in a defensive stance, but then arms wrapped around me from behind and in front, around my waist and stomach in a group hug. "Oh, hey Joshua, hey FP."

"You're back!" Joshua yelled, his voice muffled by my hoodie. My blood hardened and dried, baking into the fabric permanently.

"June, what's that on your sweatshirt?" My sister said, pulling the hood away from my face and gasping.

"What? It's just blood." I shrugged. "I've been worse."

"We missed you!" Joshua rocked me back and forth as he hugged me. I patted his back and someone cleared their throat behind me.

I spun on my heel and aimed my staff at them, sweeping Joshua behind me. I lowered my guard and relaxed once I saw who it was. "Hey Bubblegum. What're you doing here?" And how do you manage to magically appear once I come home? Do you stalk me or something?

"I was here to discuss the annual peace agreement between our kingdoms." Ah.

"Alright. See whoever you need to see. I'm going back to the sun." I started floating upwards. "I was just escaping from a sticky situation."

"Wait!"

"Yes, FP?" I looked down at her expectantly.

"I- best of luck up there in the sun." She smiled genuinely at me.

I smiled back. "Thanks. I'll take you up there someday."

And with that, I flew up at the ceiling until I slammed my shoulder into it, slowly sinking up and through. I popped out on a cornfield, and the sun was clearly visible. Good, no clouds to fly through. Those were yucky and wet. I shot up into space, to the sun, a shooting star in the sky.

I landed in the middle of a street, outside the palace walls. I blinked, having never been there before.

I pulled up my hood and shuffled towards the palace, shoving people out of my way when they didn't move. I came to the gates and caught my breath. They were beautiful red stone, with orange and yellow gems implanted in it. I went to walk through the gates, but two guards crossed lances in front of me. "Halt. No one not of royal decent may enter."

"Please," I snorted. "I am the queen." I flipped my hood back, exposing my short hair. It felt light and free, without all of that hair weighing me down. "Let me through. I was kidnapped earlier, within the palace. I've a good mind to have you fired."

"Proof?"

I sighed and carefully tugged on my hair, setting it ablaze. My head blazed, then as the flames danced higher and higher, my hair grew with it, and they put themselves out. My hip-length hair tumbled over my shoulders softly as it fell. "Is that good enough?" I snapped rudely, pressing my lips together in a straight line.

They looked at me skeptically. Just then, the Guardians touched down outside the gates, making me sigh and put a hand to my head. "You know what, I'll just materialize in. Thanks for the help, I was just trying to escape my kidnappers. You're fired!" They erupted into twin columns of flame and disintegrated. Ah, fire puns.

I jumped, propelling myself up the wall with short bursts of flame from my feet. I landed on the wall and stuck out my tongue in the direction of the Guardians. Jack Frost started flying, but I laughed and created intense hot wind currents under him, sending him high up in the air. "HEAT RISES, NUMBSKULL!" I screamed, then jumped down inside, floating down gently. I looked up at the sky, amusing myself by making him blow all over the places, going higher and higher until all the wind dropped out from under him and he plummeted to the ground. He caught himself at the last possible second and I laughed.

I tore my sweatshirt off, safely inside the palace walls, and realized the extent of my injuries. I gingerly pressed my fingertips into the exposed flesh. "Ow. Ow. Ow." I pulled away, but I started cauterizing the wound, shallow as it was, and the skin slowly started to creep over the scrape, tingling and burning and-

"Your Highness!" a pair of guards said, rushing over to me and stopping the healing process. I growled, my whole body vibrating, and they stopped short.

I sighed and stopped growling. "Thanks for being concerned guys, but I just need sleep."

They looked nervous. "There's also the matter of this castle, how easy it is for intruders-"

I flung up my hand and a dome of fire erected itself over the entire castle, starting at the top of the walls and encasing the entire palace under its area. It stopped a recovered Jack Frost just before he came within range of our archers and cannons, so I really saved him from a slow death.

"Oh. Sorry to disturb you, my lady." The guards looks sheepish and walked away.

I flew up to the top of the dome and stuck my tongue out at the Guardians, blowing raspberries at them and sticking my thumbs in my ears, wiggling my fingers. I kept on making face at them, and it was very entertaining to just watch their reactions, but then they started making faces back, some just as ridiculous as mine, and we started to have a war over it. Finally, I turned around and did the ultimate trick; I made my face grow huge, grotesquely disproportionate, my eyes bugging and my teeth bared, and I drained my face of all color. I spun and they all jumped back as I shrank my face again and laughed at them, clutching my gut and laughing until I needed to breathe, and I dropped out of their line of sight unexpectedly, forgetting about the wind under my feet. I didn't even scream, just landed the same way I did when I first woke up. Something happened to make me fall... but what?

I was pulled away from those thoughts when my chin slammed into the ground from my roll. I lay there, my face in the dirt and my limbs splayed, catching my breath. Hard-packed dirt wasn't the best I could have hoped for, and the dust got in my cuts and mouth, making me spit before getting up and flying again, a disgruntled look on my face. I was still brushing myself off when I perched near the fire wall again.

Hiccup looked slightly confused. "You guys know each other?"

I shook my head. "Never met them before they kidnapped me," I said at the same time Jack said, "Yes."

I stared at him, hard. "What?"

"What?" he asked.

I brushed it off, my headache pushing it to the back of my head. "Whatever. Why do you keep following me?"

"Man in Moon says you are Guardian! You are Guardian!" Santa was clearly frustrated.

I stuck out my tongue childishly.

"Why are the fire spirits so hard to get join?" Bunny muttered.

Tooth sniffed. "We don't need her. We're fine on our own."

"Damn right," I yelled down. I don't think Tooth realized I could hear her. "And I ain't joining either! The world will end first!"

"Come on, June!" Jack pounded on the wall with his fists in frustration, earning several burns. "Just come already! It won't hurt!"

"Fuck you!" I spat. "I do what I want, and right now, what I want is to go to sleep and not have to deal with you airheads when I wake up!" I put a hand to my head, the throbbing returning stronger than ever. "And have this damn headache go away," I muttered. "It's seriously getting on my nerves." I sat on the edge of the wall, my feet dangling, kicking the lava rock with a steady thrumming beat.

I bit the sides of my tongue in concentration and thought, blatantly ignoring the throbbing consuming the back of my head as I singed off the rest of my hair, leaving me with a boyish haircut. "Whatever, losers. Have you even met the man in the moon? Last I heard he was some lame old loser-dork like you all."

Jack looked really annoyed and I felt like smirking, just to piss him off. He was really easy to wind up.
