Chapter Eighteen (posted unedited from Nov 8 2013)

I awoke in my bedroom. "What happened?" I rubbed my head. I couldn't remember anything after the time I fell asleep, after Abby climbed into bed with me.

"You fell and hit your head." a girl said. "You were out for days."

"Really? How much training did I miss? Oh no, I need to practice-"

"Don't worry about it!" the girl laughed. "Sunni has excused you. She said you were very hurt, and you needed your rest. You are to be in here all day on bed rest orders, and your meals will be delivered to you. You can go back to training tomorrow. Abby will stay to keep you company." She gestured to Abby.

The first girl seemed familiar, but I couldn't place it. Maybe she was the first person I met here? All I knew was, we were going to be the best of friends. I could tell.

The girls left the room and I sat up, leaning against the headrest. I pulled up my shirt and examined myself. I was sore all over. I had a few scars on my stomach, more than I could remember, but I had no idea why they were there in the first place. I shrugged it off. Abby brought me breakfast and I ate it slowly, not feeling quite well.

I slept through most of the day and night, everything a big hazy blur, and I was awoken by the buzzer signaling breakfast. I got up, still slightly sore, and walked to breakfast with everyone else after showering.

I trained hard, not letting my sore muscles slow me down. At the end of the day, I collapsed into bed and slept like a rock, no dreams at all.

I learned all of the girls' names. The one I had met first was named Amanda, then there was Rebecca, Samantha, Isabella, Bethany, Juliet, Miranda, Catherine, Diana, Elena, Holly, and Paige. Plus Abby, who looked to be the youngest at age ten.

That was pretty much how the rest of the week went, until one day, Sunni came in during dinner to make an announcement. I was sitting at the head of the table, and we were all joking around and having fun, like a big family, which is essentially what we were. I was the older sister, since I was the oldest, and the littler ones like Abby and Paige, who was eleven, came to me when they had nightmares and stuff or when they just needed comfort, like from a mom. I couldn't do everything, but I was pretty darn close.

Sunni rang a gold bell and we all immediately stood at attention, pushing our chairs back quickly, Abby's almost tipping over backwards, but I caught it and righted it just before it hit the floor. "The fight approaches. Grab your weapons and prepare for battle. Now!" I was about to go rushing after them when Sunni held me back. "Not you, my champion. I have a special task for you."

I felt honored. Even though I was her daughter, I had received almost no special treatment, besides my own bathroom. "Yes, Mother."

I followed her towards a secret room. She handed me clothing that made me look like a boy, but white and a v-neck with a pocket like the rest of the girls, plus boys white skinny jeans and white and gold Osiris sneakers. I love that brand. She changed my hair back to short and red, but a little longer than usual, about the same length it had been when I first arrived. I could feel my eyes blazing, and she handed me a golden bow and gold-tipped arrows. I tied the quiver around my waist and pulled the bow over my shoulder. I slung the double katanas she gave me over my back in an 'X'. I strapped knives to my arms, which would shoot into my hands with the flick of a wrist. I grabbed my staff with one hand, and flames blazed along my body. I looked in a full length mirror and I looked like a formidable male warrior, albeit a fashionable one.

"My daughter, you have a special mission." I waited expectantly. "You must be the one to destroy the Guardians, once and for all, as it was foretold eons ago."

"Yes, Mother."

"Now off with you. We have a war to win." Her eyes gleamed madly, but I didn't question her and dashed off to find my sisters, the wind lifting me a few feet over the ground.

I remembered the flaw in our outfits and knew the Guardians would take advantage of that weakness. I grabbed Amanda's braid and she cried out, not understanding. I burnt the braid off and left her with short hair, longer than mine, but not quite touching her shoulders. I darted around faster than the eye could follow, burning off everyone else's braid too. I stood before them.

Amanda looked at me, slightly scared, grasping at her shortened hair. "Why-"

"It's a fatal flaw in our uniform. Our hair was easy to grab, and it could get in the way. The Guardians fight dirty, and they will use that to their benefit, holding you hostage, trapping you, holding it in a fight. Short hair is better for this battle."

"Oh." Amanda's voice was small and quiet, almost meek.

"Now, Sunni has commanded me in charge of this mission, to lead you into battle. I know the Guardians well, and it will be two on one, but the Sandman is a formidable opponent, able to fight many at once. Remember, do not risk your lives. If you have to, grow bright and blind them to take them down." I took a deep breath. "We are true warriors of the Sun!" I shouted.

The girls cheered and got into formation behind me, a 'V' like a flock of geese. We blasted down to Earth in a fireball, meeting the Guardians in the middle of Burgess park, where they had been waiting for us.

My voice resonated deeply, vibrating through the ground. "Guardians."

"Sun Warriors," North said with distaste.

"Let the battle begin," I boomed, and all Hades broke loose.
