17. What's your type?
"What do you mean by does that include you as well?" Natsuki laughs awkwardly, not meeting his gaze.
"I mean, what type of guys do you like? What's your type?" he asks silently.
He doesn't know why he asked that, because neither he ever thought about it before nor he intended to know about it, then, why is he suddenly curious? Or is he just trying to get away from the embarrassment of the question he asked before?
He doesn't know.
"My type...? Hm, I don't think I have a type yet." she answers truthfully, but she is still thinking about it.
"...yet?" he asks.
"I haven't had a serious type of crush on anyone before. All of the people I like are either actors or idols." she chuckles on her own self.
The breeze has turned calm and it's also not that hot anymore. The sun continues to shine in the western side of the sky, a faded orange hue decorating the clouds.
They continue to plant the seeds and are almost done with it. Both Kei and Yeontan seem to have sniffing around the bushes for god knows what.
"But, you must have something that you like about a person, don't you?" Taehyung proceeds the conversation.
"I think, it depends on the person we are talking about. Let's take our friends as examples; Fumiya-kun is a fun person to be around and he is caring towards his friends, that's what I like about him and we've been friends for a long time, too." she throws a glance at Taehyung and realises that she has trailed off the topic.
"Oh, sorry," she smiles through her eyes.
"It's alright." Taehyung mutters, shrugging.
"So, what I mean to say is, I think there shouldn't be a specific thing that you look for in a person, but instead, if you're meant to like someone, doesn't matter if it's as a friend or more than that, you'll end up liking them and embracing what they really are as a human. While it's a common sense that we can't like someone's red flags, it's an exception but the other things, such as hair colour, height, personality to some extent doesn't really matter." Natsuki always has a smile on her face while talking about the things that matter to her.
"Then, what about me?" Taehyung absentmindedly speaks.
"Eh?" she exclaims, confused.
"What do you like about me?..." he asks, looking at her with unreadable eyes, "...as a friend?" he adds at the end.
"You really want to know?" she smiles ear to ear again, making him smile too.
"Why not? I'm ready to take any criticism." he says proudly.
"Hm, to think about it, you're a really simple person." she glances at him while standing up as her work is done, finally.
"Though, your appearance might make you look like a really classy person, once I got to know you, I found out that you're really a simple person and that's not an insult." she can't help but clarify. Taehyung smiles in response.
"You like simplicity and I really admire it. Not everyone can be the way you are, I think you should be proud of it." she gets out of the pond, trying to clean her clothes even though it was useless. Taehyung follows her outside, listening to her attentively.
"You're kind; remember the first time we met?" she laughs, remembering about the egg incident.
"Of course, I do." Taehyung joins her as they walk to the water tap to wash their hands and feet while Kei and Yeontan who were waiting for their owners to get done with the work, follow them from behind.
"You are considerate to others and careful while doing things that you don't know about, sacred you might make a mistake and upset the person in the opposite end." she says as the memories make their way back in her brain from the day when they visited the shrine for the first time.
"I still don't know so much about you, but," she looks at him, who is washing his hands, crouching down to the level of water tap and he looks back at her, waiting for her to continue speaking.
As he looks up, the sun is behind Natsuki's back as the rays fall upon his eyes at an angle that makes him squint his eyes so that he can see her face clearly.
"I think I'd love to know more about you." she finishes and by the time she does, her voice has gotten much smaller compared to when she first started speaking.
She knows that he's listening to her and feels no need to raise her voice any further.
Taehyung doesn't speak and keeps gazing at her while the water is running down. Yeontan takes the chance and jumps to take a sip of water, Kei copies him too.
"Did I say something really embarrassing just now? Oh, gosh!" she buries her face in her palm, regretting everything because of his lack of response.
"You know, you're really good with words, Suki?!" Taehyung finally speaks, looking away, proceeding to wash his feet now.
"I was just taken aback, it wasn't embarrassing." he assures her as she sighs in relief.
"That was the first time someone has taken a moment to actually pay attention to me and also put it in words; it made me happy." he smiles, making way for her to wash up as well.
"Then, what's your type?" this time, Natsuki asks the same question.
"Well, I haven't thought about it either but I'd like someone who is genuine and likes me for who I am?" he gets lost in thoughts for a second, looking in the distance at particularly nothing at all and then continues, "to be honest, I'm not sure and I think I agree with you. It has nothing to do with types anymore, if we are meant to like them, then, it will happen no matter what." he finishes with a much more confident look on his face.
Seems like he got his answer!
"I know right?" Natsuki agrees as she runs a hand on her feet, cleaning the dirt with water.
"Is it only me, or the weather has changed pretty drastically? Why does it feel kind of cool?" Natsuki says as she shivers due to the cold water from the tap.
"Yeah, it was sunny the whole day. Is it going to rain?" Taehyung thinks out aloud.
"But the weather report didn't say anything about it though?" she shakes her hands to dry them off quickly as she looks at the sky.
The clouds are gathered together and it is blocking the sun from shining as bright as usual.
"Let's pray to the Kami-sama and bid our byes to Father so that we can go home soon." Natsuki suggests and Taehyung nods. They quickly make their way into the shrine, bowing to the priest as they spot him praying to the Kami in the altar room.
They offer their prayers and bid their goodbyes to him.
"Thank you so much for your hardwork today, kids. Get home safely, it looks like it is going to rain soon." The priest says to them as they bow again and leave the shrine grounds with Yeontan in Taehyung's hands and Kei trailing behind Natauki.
"Ah! I missed the rain." Natsuki looks up to the sky, hand above her eyes to shield them from the small droplets which started to fall when they got out of the shrine.
The sprinkling shower of rain feels cool and refreshing on the skin as they take their time to climb down the hill. While the soil is getting moist, it produces a damp, soft aroma that can ease anyone's mind.
Taehyung hugs Yeontan closer to his body so that he doesn't get too cold and at the same time, he enjoys the rain while it's not too strong yet.
"Let's run, or we're going to get caught up in the rain." Natsuki raises her voice because it can't reach Taehyung if she talks normally as the sound of raindrops hitting on the pavement dulles the intensity of her voice. They are down at the foot of the hill now.
It's strangely pleasant how the constant noise of water, in a form of droplets, hitting the ground doesn't come off as annoying but rather, it calms your soul, cleansing it to the core that all your brain has left inside is serenity and your worries disappear for the time being.
We should try occupying our mind with something better too, when we're at our low. Nature has a lot to offer and these life lessons are one of those things.
Taehyung nods as the rain is now starting to turn heavier with each passing second. Natsuki picks up Kei in her arms and they take a leap towards their house.
The hill is just at the corner of their street so they end up running all the way to their home. Their feet colliding with the ground make a thumping noise and everytime they take a step, the water splash around as if jumping and dancing happily in the rain.
When they reach Taehyung's place, Natsuki stops to bid him bye.
"Natsuki, why don't you come inside for now? It's raining pretty heavily now." Taehyung yells through the rain. She has no time to think but Taehyung's words made her confused. Her house is just around the corner, she can easily reach there in no time.
"Come on!" Taehyung says for the last time and pulls her in by grabbing her wrist. They run inside the house and his mother welcomes them; well, welcoming isn't the best word to describe the upcoming scenario.
"Oh my god! What have you guys done to your clothes?" Taehyung's mom rushes to them as they enter inside and stand at the doorstep, cautious not to get the living room wet.
"Oh, we were caught up in the rain." Taehyung says, ruffling his hair.
"I understand that you didn't take an umbrella with you but that doesn't explain the mud and dirt on your clothes, Tae." hearing his mother call him by a cute nickname, Natsuki giggles without her knowledge.
His mom then turns to Natsuki, "And Natsuki-chan, you too! What have you guys been doing?" she is in pure shock.
"Well, we kind of helped the priest at the shrine with planting some lotus seeds in the pond." Natsuki smiles sheepishly as her hand caresses her hands, hugging them as if seeking warmth.
Taehyung's mom sighs, "I can't even scold you now." Taehyung smiles at her words. "okay, just go and get changed." she says to Taehyung and then turns to face Natsuki again.
"Um, let me get you a towel so that you don't feel cold." she proceeds to walk away but Taehyung stops her.
"She will catch a cold at this point, mom. I'll give her some of my clothes to change into for now." he turns to Natsuki. "That's alright, isn't it?" he asks, tilting his head, eyes innocent.
"Um-" she starts but Taehyung interrupts her.
"Mom, can you please dry Kei and Tannie? I'll take Natsuki with me." he says as his mom nods, picking the dogs from the floor who jumped down as soon as Taehyung and Natsuki reached inside the house.
"Let's go?" he looks at Natsuki who reluctantly but nervously follows him inside his room.
