8 - Porch swings and envy

A/N: So I just took the ACT this morning and I have to be honest, I'm pretty sure my brain snapped in half. But thanks to everyone voting and commenting, I appreciate y'all and it gives me motivation :')

- second pic is kinda what Jack looks like, didn't wanna be cliche but just imagine that pic with dark hair and hazel eyes

- Also, listen to that video with headphones, it's so coooool ^^

Believe it or not, Potions is actually one of my favorite classes. I know Gryffindors are supposed to hate it cause of Snape and everything, but there's something satisfying about throwing a bunch of ingredients together and having a tangible product of your efforts. It's kinda like cooking, except more dangerous and I'm not shit at it.

My shoes made a gentle clacking noise as I walked down the stone floors towards the dungeon. There was something about the dungeons that made everyone talk in lowered voices, and a gentle rumble of quiet conversation surrounded me.

I felt a tap on my shoulder and spun around to see Jack grinning, his hazel eyes bright in the dim torch-light.

I smiled back at him. "Jack! I haven't seen you since Quidditch tryouts. Oh, did you make the team?"

"Yeah, I did, what about you?" I nodded happily back at him and he swept me up in a hug, spinning me around as I laughed. After congratulating each other, we continued towards the classroom.

"You're a fifth year, right?" He asked me as we walked together, our steps falling in rhythm together.

I nodded. "Yeah I am. It's weird that I haven't seen you before this year."

He shoved his hands into his robe pockets, saying casually "I actually transferred from Durmstrang at the beginning of the year. The weather is so much nicer here."

"I never would have thought you were from Durmstrang," I said, looking up at him. Thinking of the northern boys' handsome yet heavy features, I mentally comparing them to Jack's sculpted jawline and straight nose. Everything about him exuded a fresh and carefree confidence, an almost complete opposite to the serious Durmstrang men.

"What, is it cause of my devilishly good looks?" He caught me staring and winked. I felt my cheeks flush and was glad to see the Potions classroom entrance.

I went over to my usual seat between Ron and Harry. Not to flex or anything, but I was pretty much the only reason neither of them had T's.

Snape swirled up to the front of the classes, wearing (gasp) his signature black cloak.

I wonder if he just had a closet full of the same cloak, or if he only has one and washes it really diligently?

I cupped my chin in my hand and let my mind wander down an extremely strange path. I was saved by a soft smack on my shoulder, and Harry gestured towards Snape, who was staring expectantly at me.

"Sorry, what was the question?" I asked apologetically. He stepped closer, and uttered through probably around only a centimeter of open mouth, "The Wit-Sharpening potion. Its ingredients?"

I bit my lip, and after a moment, answered "I know it can be used as a counter to the Confundus charm, and I know that its main ingredients are ginger root and ground scarab beetle, but what I'm confused on is why the armadillo bile is added last, when it would be most effective directly after the ginger?"

Snape pointed at me, and I felt a flash of nervousness run through me. After a pause, he murmured, "Excellent question," and glided up to the board to write some armadillo equation down.

"Good job Y/n," Ron nudged me, and I grinned back at him.

"I actually didn't know what the hell I was talking about, I just looked at the textbook that he obviously didn't notice was right in front of me," We laughed softly, trying not to let Snape hear us.  He explained the rest of the steps, which I found myself unintentionally ignoring, and then set us loose on it.

I sent Harry to gather the ingredients, as the poor dear wasn't much help when it came to the actual figuring of the technicalities. I began mixing the ingredients, explaining what I was doing as I did it so Harry and Ron could learn.

"See here, I'm chopping up the ginger root now, but it needs to be in cubes of 1cm each see. Now...Ron, you wanna take that over? Ok, just make sure the sides are all even or it might explode. Now Harry, you can grind up the scarab beetle and I'll begin measuring the bile. No Ron...Ron, no. Harry, you're holding it upside down. Those aren't even Ron, do you value your eyebrows?"

I furrowed my brows in concentration as I squinted at a smudged line in the textbook. Not turning my head away from the paper, I asked "Hey guys, do you know if it's supposed to be 12.4 g of pearl or 1.24 g? ...Guys?"

I looked over to find Harry fighting Ron with a (thankfully dead) scarab beetle, and I sighed in mock exasperation. "Boys!" They glanced up at me sheepishly, and I shook a finger at them like Professor McGonagall. Suddenly, their faces turned grim, and my smile dropped.

"What is it? I'm not actually mad, you know." Ron shook his head, and Harry subtly pointed to something behind me. I turned around to find Snape standing over us.

"Uh, hi Professor! What brings you to these parts."

He ended up separating the three of us, stating that 'Those heathens will never learn anything if you do all the work for them.'

"Y/L/N, you'll sit with Ahelios and Draper. Potter and Weasley, I think you can sit with some of your Slytherin friends. Maybe you'll actually get something done."

Harry and Ron looked like they were heading to the gallows. Ron set his face, and saluted to me. I saluted back and nodded. We turned in our opposite directions.

I lugged my bag over to Jack, who was sitting with a girl I didn't know that well named Kenna Draper. She was obviously interested in him, but he didn't seem to return the feelings.

"Decided to join me, huh sweetheart?" He crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair. I stared into his eyes and felt an involuntary grin creeping across my face. I fought to supress it and frowned, trying to act serious.

"Not like I had much of a choice. Snape forced me over here." I sighed and sat down heavily, "And now I guess I'm going to be getting D's for the rest of the year, seeing the type of company I'll be hanging around."

"Oh you'll be getting a D all right." He smirked and I felt my mouth twitch. We stared at each other for several moments, daring each other to call the other's bluff. I felt myself starting to break.

We simultaneously burst into laughter and I clutched my stomach, not able to stop gasping.

"I needed that." I wiped the corner of my eye. It wasn't even that funny of a joke, but there was something about him that made everything funnier. Our laughter faded away, but then I'd think about it and we'd start back up again until we didn't even know what we were laughing about.

*Jack's POV*

I felt someone - no strike that, some people - staring daggers into the back of my head. Y/N sat next to me gasping with laughter, and I found myself admiring the way her face lit up and her eyes shut when she was laughing. Still grinning from the joke, I turned around in my chair to see Potter, Weasley, and Malfoy glaring at me with identical expressions of annoyance on their faces.

'They must also like Y/N,' I thought, noticing how their anger was directed at me for making her laugh. I felt an uncommon protectiveness wash over me, and I slung an arm across the back of her chair, smirking at the boys. I knew that it would make them angrier, and I loved it.

*Y/N's POV*

After Potions, I had Charms, Transfiguration, and Divination. Classes were finally over, and I decided to go into the courtyard to take a break and read.

It was nice living at a boarding school, because I could just leave my things in my room and wander around the castle with my book. I walked out to the courtyard and headed towards the gardens. It was the late afternoon, and there was still a watery light out. I let myself relax, and I ran my hands along some flowering bushes surrounding the walkway.

I never saw the gardener, but they must have to do constant work to maintain the state of the Garden.

There were large bushes trimmed into the shapes of animals, and you could hear the noise they made when the wind rippled across them; I passed by a life-sized tiger bush, and the rumble of a faint roar filled my ears as the wind swept past me and through the leaves.

To my left, there was a small tree that had branches that moved like silk in the breeze, but felt like normal tree bark if you brushed your hand across it. Small pinpricks of light that I knew were miniature pixies flew through the branches, weaving a trail of light and disappearing into the sky. To my right sat a mesmerizing bush with fragrant flowers that changed colors every couple seconds, creating a kaleidoscope effect that I found hard to tear my eyes away from.

I aimlessly followed the path until I found myself in a grove of golden apple trees. They formed a ring around what looked like a porch swing attached to an arch.

(It looks kinda like this, but switch the white for gold and pretend it's in the grove)

'Perfect,' I thought, and I happily made my way over to the swing, which I noticed had small flowered vines weaving across the back and sides. It was so perfectly idyllic, and I found myself lost in my book as soon as I cracked it open.

The ground was covered in golden leaves that drifted down from the stately trees like they were falling through water, the sunlight glinting off their sides as they fell in slow motion. I felt a cool breeze brush my shoulder, and a light tinkling came from the trees like windchimes.

I mentally declared the grove my new favorite place, and continued reading my book, Pride and Prejudice.

"Ugh, it's so obvious," I mumbled to myself, "How does she not notice he's in love with her? I mean, he's broody, but he's not THAT broody."

"Some people are just unobservant like that," You were startled by a low voice from in front of you, and looked up from your book to see Cedric. He stood in a patch of sunlight, and almost looked like he was...glowing.

"Cedric," I murmured, "You're...you're glowing." He walked closer and leaned down towards me to whisper into my ear.

"You may not know this about me Y/n, but I'm not exactly normal. You see..." His fresh breath caressed the side of my neck and I bit my lip to keep from squeaking. His voice was soft and secretive, as if he were confiding in me. "You see, it's because believe it or not...I was standing in the sun." He leaned back from you and laughed as you blushed.

"You should have seen your face! Dumbass, of course I looked like I was glowing in the sun, that's how light works. I'm not a damn vampire."

"I didn't think you were actually glowing," I punched him on the shoulder playfully, and he pouted good-naturedly, "I just said it looked like you were glowing."

He sat down on the swing with me and gazed at the whispering trees.

"I've never been here before. I didn't actually know this place existed." He said, "I just decided to go for a walk and found myself here."

He smiled at me, "Maybe it's fate." Cedric picked up my abandoned book and read the cover. "Pride and Prejudice, huh? One of my favorite books, actually."

I smiled, happy to find someone else that enjoyed muggle books. "I know, right? A lot of magical people look down on muggle authors, but I think Jane Austen is a genius. I also think she may have secretly been a witch, but I guess we'll never know."

We started talking about muggle books, and before we knew it the light was gone and replaced  by the pale glow of the moon.

I loved talking with Cedric. He was so easy to converse with, and our minds were so similar that we found ourselves agreeing on almost everything. Not to mention he was hot as FUCK. Like damn bitch, that jawline, I could cut myself on it. The only downside is, sometimes I find myself getting distracted by his face while we're talking.

A/N: So that's the latest on the bachelorette hogwarts edition. Comment if you have any specific requests for me to slip into the story. Also, there's gonna be a pretty big twist near the end of the book. But that's a long ways away, so for now you can just concentrate on which dreamboat you like the most.
