CHAPTER 31
Lennox and I spend the rest of the day walking around the boardwalk by the beach. It's easy to see why this place is her favorite. Not only is the view of the ocean incredible, but I remember from the last time I was here how amazing the sun setting over the water looked. I can't wait to watch it with Lennox from the very top of the stadium.
We make it inside the gates of the theater, fifteen minutes before show time. Brick walls surround us. People are lined up in every direction looking to buy merchandise at the booths against the wall. Lines wrap through other lines as other concert goers wait to buy their over priced greasy food.
"Oh-my-god," a young voice shouts. "You're Lennox Taylor."
Lennox and I have stepped out of the crowd and are lingering by the main wrought iron gates. She stops in her tracks and turns. A young girl, probably no older than thirteen, stares at Lennox with admiration. Her hands are trembling in the wake of meeting her favorite celebrity. Something I'll have to get used to is having Lennox be recognized in public. I'd been so caught up in just getting to know her that I'd almost forgotten about the fame.
Beside the young girl is an older woman who I presume is her mom. She places a steady hand on the young brunette girls' shoulders.
"I can't believe you're here, you're my idol." She slaps her mouth with her hand, tears springing to her eyes.
Lennox's lips pull into a gentle smile. She's tired but there's a glow about her as she looks down at her fan. "Aw, sweetheart, don't cry."
Without a single note of hesitation, Lennox walks right up to her. The girl waves her hands, trying to fend off the tears.
"I'm sorry, it's just a dream come true. I wasn't even going to come tonight. Mom likes this singer, and I wasn't sure I wanted to sit through it, but now it's all worth it."
Before meeting Lennox, I saw her on a few talk shows. I remember seeing her stop once on Good Morning America to reach out to a group that had been there since the wee hours of the morning waiting for her. They had signs that said they camped out. Then there were other times when I'd read things about her and her attitude that wasn't pleasant. But now, standing here watching her interact with a star struck fan makes me like her even more.
"Will you be coming to the event at the Orbit in a few weeks?" Lennox asks.
"Oh, I hope so." The girl casts a look at her mom.
The woman gives a non-committal smile and says, "We'll see if we can buy tickets."
"Hey, what's your name?"
The girl's eyes bulge out of her head, "Heather."
"Heather, it's so nice to meet you." She glances up at the older woman for a second before pulling her attention back to Heather. "If it's okay with your... Mom?"
The woman nods.
"Would you like free passes to the event?"
The girl screams causing a few heads to turn. A small group starts to walk over. Behind us one of the bands starts playing. The echoing beat of the drums bounces off the walls. The fans walking over don't seem phased by the start of the concert.
"Yes, but how...."
"I'll let you in on a little secret," she whispers. The girl leans in. "My dad owns that theater."
"Oh my God!"
As she talks to the young girl about her dad owning the theater a thought hits me. Could Lennox be the girl behind the Orbit account? There's no way. I shake it off because that person is definitely not Lennox.
Lennox takes all their information, and texts it to her dad so that she doesn't forget. Then she not only takes a picture with Heather, but she happily signs and takes pictures with other fans as well. I'm in awe of how happy she seems. It's like nothing else matters except those fans standing in front of her. I'm beginning to see why she's so liked in Hollywood.
When Lennox is done with the small crowd, she seeks me out, and takes my hand in hers.
"I'm so sorry," she says.
I stare at her like she's crazy. "Sorry for what? You looked so happy. That's the real you, isn't it? There was no mask, no faking a smile. You truly loved meeting them and it showed on your face."
Lennox stays quiet. I'm not sure what she sees when she looks at me but her eyes water a little, and I don't think it's because she's upset. She cups my cheek with her hand. I lean into her touch, enjoying it more each time she does it. I don't have time to think or react as she pushes up onto her toes and plants a soft kiss on my lips.
I'm sucked in like debris swept away by a tornado. The second her lips touch mine I put my hand against her lower back and pull her towards me. The kiss feels more natural this time, like we've been doing this forever. My mouth opens, allowing her inside. She presses her body against me. I have a hard time controlling myself. As she begins to pull away, I grip her cheek for one more kiss.
She breaks the kiss with a shaky breath. Her eyes remain closed as she touches her forehead to mine. She inhales deeply to steady herself like she's trying to calm down. I'm just as worked up.
"I don't want this night to end," she says.
Our foreheads remain touching. My thumb gently glides along the edge of her cheek bone.
"The night might end, but what I'm feeling for you right now at this moment isn't going away and won't end anytime soon. I never expected to feel like this," I say.
"Can I confess something?" her voice sounds small. "I never expected it either. Max I'm terrified I'm gonna hurt you. You're not the guy I thought you were, and I hate myself for the way I treated you when we first met. If I could take it back..."
"I'm not mad."
I stop her from speaking. Things have certainly taken a turn since we first met. I hate seeing the guilt in her hooded eyes and wish more than anything I could take it away.
"And I don't regret meeting the way we did."
She raises a brow.
"I don't regret it, because if we hadn't met at the airport, the kiss at Alexa's house might have never happened. And if that were the case, we wouldn't be here right now."
Her lip's part, but she doesn't speak. Her soft gaze travels over my face trying to get a read on me.
"I never thought of it like that." Some mirth returns to her eyes, but she still bites her lip like she's uncertain. "It's just, I'm not sure what I want right now. I never imagined things happening between us and I still have some baggage out in LA that haunts me."
"It's Chase, isn't it?"
She nods, a tear falling from her eyes. I wipe it away before it reaches her lips. "I'm sorry Max— I..."
I shake my head. "Hey, none of that. You do what you have to do but I'm sticking around no matter what."
Now that I've gotten to know the real Lennox, I like having her in my life. Meeting her was one of the best things to happen to me this summer. All year, even. It may have not started out so good, but now things are definitely looking up.
"Should we go enjoy the rest of our night?" I ask, trying to lighten the mood.
Her smile lights up her face and I'm glad to see it again. I start to step back, but she grabs a hold of my wrist pulling me towards her. "I'm not done with you yet," she says aggressively as she plants her lips on mine.
Kissing her, I realize that I could get used to this.
