Chapter 4: Bewildering Woman
It was the strangest meal of my life and not only because it seemed Miri was a terrible cook. It seemed she didn't know when to stop adding stuff to food. She had gone for a simple pizza on toast, but she had added all sorts of weird ingredients to the sauce, like star anise, for their health benefits.
I still forced myself to choke down the pizza as she said "You seem curious to know why I'm here."
"Well yeah, it's not everyday a woman I've known for a day breaks into my appartment." My tone was cutting despite my best efforts to remain neutral.
"I'm curious about you too, so let's play 20 questions", she said with a bright smile.
I was getting ticked off "Why would I play 20 questions with the criminal in my home? Just tell me why you're here!"
Still smiling, she responded "Either we play 20 questions or we sit in silence, I'll stay here until you agree to it. You wouldn't be able to kick me out anyways, I'm stronger than you."
How about the cops kick you out? I wanted to scream in her face but for some reason I didn't. Her assured tone made me feel like she would just dismiss this possibility.
Despite looking about my age, she was behaving so childishly, so I just gave in.
"Hm, wanna toss a coin to see who can ask the first question?" Her smile was beautiful but it was starting to annoy me. How relaxed and happy she seemed was starting to annoy me too.
I let her have the first turn.
"When were you discovered?" She asked, picking the olives off her pizza. Why did she let me put them on if she didn't like them?
I watched her pick them out carefully one by one, then put them on my plate. How did she know I loved olives ? Or did she just treat me as a human thrash bag?
"I was discovered when I was 15 at a ballet competition for high school students. From there I won a scholarship and went on to study and become a ballerino." I responded flatly.
"Hmm, that's nice, did your parents approve of your career path?" She asked her eyes shining with curiosity.
"One question per person. It's my turn now. What are you doing in my house ?" I asked, already fearing the answer.
She took a sip of water before responding "I wanted to get to know you and since I didn't have your phone number, this felt like the quickest way. I didn't want to wait until the group met up again. Who knows when that would happen?"
That's it? This was her big reason? I was oddly flattered and happy. I had to mentally kick myself, I needed to remember that no normal person would do this. It meant she was either crazy or dangerous, maybe both.
"Why did you retire so young ?" She went straight into the personal questions.
I gaged how much I could tell her without coming across as crazy, before remembering that she herself wasn't entirely right in the head. "Just felt right, couldn't imagine doing it after 30. It always felt like something was coming for me at 30, so I always knew this career would stop at that point."
She started intently at me, before pulling out her phone and texting something.
I waited for her to be done to ask "How did you break in here? How did you know where I lived?"
She didn't seem to mind that I asked two questions as she answered them both "The group told me where you lived, although they did try to dissuade me from doing this. They thought you'd have a heart attack but look at you, you're fine." She said while gesturing to my body. "As for how I broke in, I climbed the pipe, jumped from the neighboring balcony onto here. You left the window open so I slid in. You know you should really close that, it's not safe."
Was the woman that broke into my house really giving me safety tips right now?
"Wait you climbed the pipe then jumped ?" I was actually shocked. The pipe was icy and the balconies were pretty far apart, so for her to have done this was mindboggling.
"What? Is it hard?" She asked nonchalantly.
I chose to ignore how she had responded, I needed to concentrate on the task at hand, getting more information from her. Although it was hard remaining focused when she started at me with those beautiful eyes.
"How do you know I like olives?" I blurted out, wasting my precious question on something futile.
She got really close to me, leaned in and murmured in my ear "What kind of woman doesn't know what her husband likes? Especially after being married for around 2000 years."
I choked on my spit as she retracted from me.
"I'm sorry husband ? I think you might have me confused with someone else ma'am." I yelled out ignoring the warmth that spread in my chest at hearing her calling me that.
"No I'm pretty sure it's you. You just don't remember, but don't worry as a doting wife" she stood up and put her hand to her chest solemly "I'll stay here, by your side until you remember everything and come to the realization that I may be crazy but I'm also right."
She literally sauntered off to my bedroom and after a moment of shock I followed after her.
I found her laying in bed only wearing a tank top and boxers. She had taken off her blouse and pants, I could now see that her arms were muscly and adorned with small colorful tattoos. Her legs were really long, my gaze was practically caressing her body.
As I gazed upon her laying in my bed, reading one of my books, I knew I was about to make either the best or the stupidest decision of my life.
I wasn't going to kick her out, not today at least, she looked too good and I didn't have it in me.
I just wanted to indulge in this fantasy with this bewildering woman for tonight.
Maybe I would be dead by tomorrow but what's life without a little risk?
