Sister Knows Best

Elizabeth ran out of the house to help Jimmy carry a box of cat food.

"Cat food?" Elizabeth looked at it, confused, "I mean, I know James likes to eat weird food combinations but don't you think feeding him cat food is a bit too far?"

Their father and mother laughed.

"It's not for me!" Jimmy said as Elizabeth also brought in the cat food, "It's for Norman."

"Who's Norman?" Elizabeth asked, sounding curious.

Jimmy pointed to the crate that their father was carrying.

Inside was a meowing cat.

Elizabeth gasped and squealed.

"We'll let him out as soon as we finish unloading everything." He said and Elizabeth and Jimmy sprung up.

-

"Alright, ready?"

Jimmy and Elizabeth nodded and their father opened up the crate.

Their mother was taking a video as their father grabbed Norman and brought him out.

"Aww!" Elizabeth squealed and Norman's eyes got bigger from fear.

"Careful, Elizabeth." Their father said, passing Norman to Jimmy, "He's really nervous right now."

But as soon as their father let go of Norman, he started roaming around the living room, sniffing each and every corner.

They had brought in a cat tree and a toy that was a pole with a red fluffy ball hanging from it.

It was like tetherball but in cat form.

There were also little mice and fluffy string toys.

Eventually, Elizabeth and Jimmy grabbed Norman and brought him to Jimmy's room.

When Jimmy was watching as Norman settled under his bed, Elizabeth decided to bring up something important.

"So James." She started, "I heard that you- er- the definition of 'Love is Love'."

"Yeah." Jimmy said, not knowing where the conversation was going, "What about it?"

"Well..." She sighed, "Look, James, I'm your sister and I know you the best out of anyone in this house. I know that you like guys."

Jimmy started to get very uncomfortable and decided to lie, "N-no I don't! You know Coco, I like her!"

Elizabeth just stared at him and Jimmy looked to the ground.

"I- I don't like Coco. We don't talk much anymore anyway." Jimmy trailed off.

"Come on, I know how you stare at random boys that you find cute at the park or on TV."

Jimmy didn't want to be apart of this conversation anymore and tried to get away by saying he needed to use the restroom.

"In a minute, we're almost done." Elizabeth said.

"Hmph." Jimmy sat back down; arms crossed in a pouting way.

"Look. I just need to know, do you like guys?"

Jimmy hesitated but nodded.

Elizabeth smiled in a caring way and hugged her brother.

"That's perfectly fine."

Jimmy then started crying.

"B-but C-Carmen said that g-gay people are m-monsters who want to c-corrupt the w-world!"

"What?!" Elizabeth exclaimed.

Jimmy nodded and explained what Carmen had told him a couple days prior.

At the end Elizabeth scoffed.

"Well guess what, Carmen's an idiot who doesn't know anything. I never liked him anyway." She added and Jimmy laughed through his tears.

"I'm sorry he made you think that because he's wrong. People who are gay are the same as people who are straight. Me, mom, and dad all support you, did you know that?"

Jimmy shook his head, "I thought you guys would say I was an outcast."

"Well, you're not." Elizabeth said a bit sternly, "You're the same annoying little brother that I've always loved."

"Even if I'm gay?"

"Even if you're gay."

They hugged once more and walked downstairs for dinner.

-

"James, are you alright? You look like you've been crying." His mother pointed out, putting down a bowl of pasta and meat sauce in front of Jimmy.

Jimmy nodded and started eating.

"Thanks mom! It's really good!" Jimmy smiled, food still in his mouth.

His father sighed, "James, what have we told you about talking when there's food still in your mouth?"

Jimmy swallowed, "Er- not to do it?"

Elizabeth laughed.

Their mother sat down next to Jimmy.

"Sweetie, you do look like you've been crying though. Are you sure you're, okay?" She asked, looking a bit concerned.

"Yep." Jimmy said, not making eye contact with his sister who looked like she was trying to force Jimmy to tell their parents.

Elizabeth then sighed, "Carmen's been mean to James." She said simply, spooning food onto her fork.

Jimmy shot her a look, but Elizabeth didn't see it, as she was looking at her mother's reaction.

"Carmen's been what?" Their mother asked in a shaky voice, her expression looking horrified.

Jimmy said nothing.

"James. What has Carmen been doing?" His mother asked sternly.

"He said I'm a monster!" Jimmy shouted, his voice getting shaky.

"H-he what?! Why would he do that?!"

Jimmy started crying and he tried to explain, but his parents couldn't understand him through his sobs.

His mother hugged him and Jimmy put his head on her shoulder, trying to catch his breath while Elizabeth explained the situation to their parents.

-

"And yeah. Carmen's not talking with him anymore because he's gay." Elizabeth finished.

It got silent and all you could hear were Jimmy's sniffs.

Eventually, Norman meowed and pawed at Jimmy, looking upset.

They all laughed and Jimmy picked up the kitten and pet him, calming down.

"Aww, looks like Norman's been listening as well." Jimmy's mother said, rubbing Jimmy's back.

"James, what Elizabeth said, is it true?" His father asked, looking serious.

Jimmy hesitated but nodded.

To his surprise, his father smiled.

"We thought something was up. I'm sorry, we all are, that you thought we wouldn't care about you. We do. We still love you."

"B-but what about C-Carmen?" Jimmy asked, not making eye contact with anyone but Norman.

"Well you're always going to meet people like Carmen. People who think that gay people are bad."

"But know that we support you. No matter what." His mother said and Jimmy smiled through the tears.
