Chapter 8 || Worst Day Ever
With anxiety freaking her out, Anaisha walked inside the office of her enemy, Dr. Kabir Thapar.
"Welcome, Dr. Anaisha Gujral," said Kabir with a smug, sitting in his black leather chair behind his black wooden office desk.
"Morning, Dr. Thapar," mumbled Anaisha in a low voice.
"Morning. So, how are you feeling now, Dr. Gujral? You seem quite shaken to me. Are my instincts true or am I mistaken?" asked Kabir in a very sarcastic tone.
A scowl came on Anaisha's face, hearing what Kabir said. True, she was a bit anxious, and freaked out too, but no way could he mock her like that. But then, she wondered, how did he know that she was shaken. Was it so easy to read her or he was a mind reader?
Maybe her mother was right about her being too poor at encrypting her thoughts. Frowning at her incapability of encrypting her thoughts, Anaisha cursed herself for being so stupid and acting like an idiot. From the corner of her eyes, she saw him staring at her with an amused look, which increased her irritation at him as well as her brain, which was coming up with no good response to answer his question.
On the other hand, Kabir didn't know what was up with her. He had asked her something quite simple, thinking she would retort and that would give him a chance to punish her and make her apologise. But not up to his expectation, instead of retorting back, she fell completely silent, making all sorts of comical expressions, Kabir couldn't make out were because of her anxiety or self criticism.
He patiently waited for her to reply, but she continued frowning and making expressions, which was making it hard for him to suppress his chuckles as she was looking very cute and funny. But still, controlling himself, he cleared his throat to get her attention, yet it turned out to be futile. He shook his head, knowing well that she could only be Aarav's sister. Brother half gone, sister fully! What a lovely pair of siblings!
Having no choice, he snapped his fingers in front of her and with dismay and annoyance, said, "You're so much like your brother Aarav. He's also a gone case and you, too. But at least, he has the courtesy to reply when someone ask him something, unlike you."
"Excuse me, Dr. Thapar, but you can't something like that about me! You don't even know me well, so you don't have any right to say such thing to me. And don't drag my brother into this," retorted Anaisha, with anger in her eyes. A part of her brain wondered how did he know she was Aarav's sister, but she didn't ask it.
"True, Dr. Gujral, I don't know you well, not that I even want to. But in last some minutes, whatever I've learnt about you is enough for me to pass a remark on you. And also, it gives me the right to tell you that, if your habit of being absentminded remains persistent then unfortunately I have to say, you will never become good doctor, let alone best," said Kabir surly, not caring if this offend her.
As soon as he finished speaking, he looked up at her, only to find her throwing daggers at him. But he shrugged his shoulders, completely nonchalant about it, agitating her more.
Anaisha rolled her eyes and in a very calm voice said, "Look, Dr. Thapar, I'm sorry, but I don't agree with your view about me. Firstly, till now, my duty hasn't even began because we're just talking or should I say you're just trying to humiliate me for the morning incident. Secondly, I really don't think so you have any authority to make any personal remark on me. I'm absentminded or not, that you'll only know after my duty begins, which I don't see starting anytime soon."
Hearing this, Kabir couldn't help but smile, as Anaisha reminded him of their childhood, when they used to meet almost everyday, though not exactly meet but still. And because of that, Kabir felt a little less angry toward her. Still smiling, he recalled, even when she was just 2-3 years old, she was the same. Most of the time she used to sit there sulking or puffing her cheeks because of her over protective brothers' fussiness, preventing her to play with them.
He never really came to know her real name because firstly, he was more interested in playing with Avi and his brothers and secondly, in eating those tasty snacks that Khushi aunty used to make. By the time he was 13, he was so stuck up with his studies and his grandfather's distorting health, that he never really got time to visit Aarav's family. And then after his grandfather's death, the environment of his home became so hostile and hard for him, that he joined a boarding school in Dehradun, after which he got busy with his MBBS then further courses. He only started visiting Aarav's family some 5 years back, when she already had left for London.
"I didn't crack some joke, right, Dr. Thapar? Why are you smiling?" asked Anaisha surly. The way Kabir was gazing at her, with that smile on his face, made her feel weird or actually self conscious and suspicious as well.
"Huh? Oh yeah, nothing, Dr. Gujral. Anyway let's start with work then. So what should I assign you ... how about apologising to me?" prompted Kabir in a very innocent tone.
If this wasn't a hospital and he wasn't her senior, she would've murdered him. How dare he ask her to apologise? That's irrelevant! The morning incident was his fault.
"Why should I apologise? It was your fault. You should apologise to me!" No ways she would ever bow her head down in front of him.
"Only one person is gonna apologise and that person is you!" said Kabir firmly. Well if she won't then he had other ways to make her do so.
"Never! I'm not gonna apologise to you for that incident," said Anaisha adamantly. This man was really unchivalrous!
"Well, if you won't then in that case I'll go and make a complaint to Dean about your behaviour. How will your Uncle react when he gets to know that you on your very first day disobeyed your senior? This ... ," Kabir paused as his eyes caught the sight of the coffee burn on her forearm. Getting up from his seat, he walked upto her. With his height of 6'2, he easily towered her 5'7 frame, which made Anaisha crane her neck up to look at him and in a concerned filled voice Kabir said, "How could you be so careless? That's a coffee burn, why didn't you apply ointment on it, you crazy girl? That might get infected and would pain you a lot."
Without waiting for her to reply, he turned to walk to his cabinet, and took out a box of medicines. He came back to her and sternly said, "Sit down on the couch, first apply some ointment. Have you even washed it with water? Say something, Anaisha!"
But Anaisha didn't know what to say. Just a minute back, he was asking her to apologise to him and now he was being all concerned for her. She shook her head and quietly replied, "Yes, I cleaned it with water but hadn't had the time to apply ointment."
"You're really stupid," said Kabir and started searching for burn relieving ointment in his medicine box. He found it in few seconds and forwarding it to her, added, "Here, take this ointment and apply it. Or else it'll pain you more."
Still astounded with his strange behaviour, Anaisha accepted the ointment. As the burn was in her forearm, she needed to take her lab coat off. But she didn't feel comfortable doing that in Kabir's presence and hesitantly said, "Can I use your washroom, please."
"Sure," promptly said Kabir, understanding her unspoken hesitation.
Anaisha got up and left for his washroom, leaving Kabir wonder why had he acted so caring toward her. It puzzled him as he had never behaved so anxiously for anyone except his friends and GM, then why her? He couldn't fathom why, but perhaps it was because she was his best friend's sister and at one point of his life, she was his acquaintance.
Feeling slightly embarrassed, he got up from the couch and went back to sit on his chair. Composing himself, he waited for her to come out, which she did some minutes later.
Anaisha, puzzled, came out of the washroom and stood infront of him, again, waiting for him to say something or give her instructions. She hoped for him to give her instructions for her duty instead of talking about her burn, because it was getting really awkward now.
Looking at her, Kabir continued from where he had left earlier. "So, Dr. Anaisha, I'd be glad if you could apologise to me first. After that only, I'll start with your duty."
Mentally thanking him for getting back to business, with her ego intact, she snapped, "No, I won't apologise. It was your fault, you apologise. See, even I got a burn because of you."
"So did I, but only you will apologise now! Not me!" exclaimed Kabir.
"No, I won't!" Anaisha said determinedly.
Kabir looked away irritably as his precious time was being wasted like this. But then an idea came into his mind. Looking back her, he smiled sweetly and very innocently said, "Okay, I will. I'm very sorry, Dr. Gujral, for whatever happened today. I accept it was entirely my fault. And I'm very ashamed for it. Please forgive me."
Passing him a victorious smile, Anaisha as-matter-of-factly said, "See, I told you na it was your fault. Anyway it's okay. I forgive you!"
"That's so generous and kind of you, Dr. Gujral. Should we start with our work now?" asked Kabir, very politely.
"Yeah sure, Dr. Thapar. You don't need my permission for that," replied Anaisha.
Kabir passed her a smile, and picked up his pager to page his interns, Dr. Jay and Dr. Sara. Anaisha wondered what he was doing, but stayed quiet, not wanting to get into another fight with him. Though Kabir apologised to her, she knew he still was upto something and she nervously dreaded for whatever he had planned for her.
Couple minutes later, there was a knock on the door and two voices asked for Kabir's permission to enter his office. Kabir permitted them and Jay and Sara walked inside, slightly horrified with Kabir calling them so suddenly.
As they walked inside, Anaisha glanced at them with confusion and then turned to Kabir, who gave her a nod, before speaking, which left Anaisha all shocked!
"Morning, Dr. Kabir," wished Jay and Sara in unison, both of them pursuing post graduation in cardiology.
"Morning, doctors. You both must be wondering why I have called you both here, right?" Both Sara and Jay nodded their heads, he continued, "Well, let me tell you then, Dr. Anaisha Gujral is my intern today, and your substitute, which means, you both are only going to look after my patients in critical care, while Dr. Gujral would do all the other works like tests, checkups etcetera. So, you both handover the files of all those patients in general and children's wards to Dr. Gujral, so that she could start her work. Now go back to your duties and I want reports of both the patients of room no. 302 and 305."
Shooting one sympathetic glance at Anaisha, both Jay and Sara turned to leave, when Kabir stopped them again and said, "And, Dr. Sara, inform Dr. Jaiswal that Dr. Anaisha will be helping him with rectal examinations after her lunch break."
Anaisha's eyes went wide in shock hearing all this. So she was right, Kabir had apologised to her, only to get his revenge like this. She shot him an angry glare and as he turned to look at her, she passed him a very sweet smile.
Kabir quirked his brows, trying not to laugh and with a straight face said, "C'mon now get to your work. Dr. Jay and Dr. Sara, will give you all the files and ward numbers. Do your best, Dr. Gujral!"
"Thank you," mumbled Anaisha and under her breath said, "Ghanta all the best." She walked out of his office, still rumbling under her breath.
Kabir had taken his revenge on her very well by making her work really hard.
That man! One, one day surely she'll get even with him. Throughout the day he made her run from here to there. First for those elderly patients, whose tests were supposed to be done and then for those kids of Children's ward, who demanded chocolates and other stuff, to be brought only by her. Those kids were such a pain! She was never like that as a kid. Though, only her parents can tell that though!
For crying out loud, she was a doctor not their personal servant. He even made her do those tests. Rectal examination! Yuck! She won't be able to eat her food for some day. Chi! And if this was all not enough, he even made her go into the morgue to inform the morgue incharge to make a list of all the unclaimed dead bodies which the Admin had asked for. Though this work could have been done by a ward boy or nurse but he made her do this. And that too, Morgue which was home for all the Dead Bodies, which kind of made her scared!
"What are you waiting for Dr. Anaisha? Go and finish this work, after that your duty is over. C'mon, c'mon, go fast," said Kabir while reading his file.
Since it was the last work for today, she defiantly headed for the morgue. When she entered that morgue, the lights went out leaving the whole place in black, making Anaisha jump fear.
"Mr. Jha? Mr. Jha? Please help me!" cried Anaisha for help. She wasn't afraid of darkness but she felt suffocated in it. That too with dead bodies all around her, made it even creepier and she couldn't help but cry.
Suddenly she felt someone take her in an embrace, but Anaisha couldn't recognise the person. The person, who was holding her in his arms, soothingly said, "Chhoti, it's me, Aarav. Calm down, Chhoti, it's all okay!" And Anaisha recognised her brother at last, and hugging him tight, cried her heart out.
They moved out of the morgue and Aarav took her to his office, followed by a worried and guilty Kabir, who had no idea she had a problem with darkness. He had just sent her to morgue only because her work was over and there was still time for her duty to get over.
He had no idea, something like this would happen. Only when Aarav informed him that Anaisha was scared of darkness, did he get to know about it and realisation dawned on him that the building in which morgue was located, had an electricity failure and along with Aarav, he worried for Anaisha, walked upto building 2.
They walked inside Aarav's office and Aarav made a frightened Annie sit on the sofa. He passed her a glass of water, which she accepted with shaky hands. She gulped down the entire glass of water at once and started breathing loudly to calm herself. And while doing so, she glanced at Kabir with irksome.
"Er ... Kabir, stay with Annie here, I'll just go and check on my patient," requested Aarav, thinking it would give them time to sort out their issues.
Kabir nodded and Aarav left. Now it was only Kabir and Annie in the room and Annie wasn't in any mood to talk to him, badly miffed with him and shaken with the incident some minutes prior.
Kabir settled on the sofa opposite to Anaisha and with guilt said, "I didn't know you were scared of darkness. I'm sorry."
"Sure, you didn't. And I'm not scared of darkness, I just don't feel good in darkness. I feel suffocated. And please can we not talk? You have already made my first day of internship a nightmare, atleast now let me relax," said Anaisha coldly.
"Okay," said Kabir and stayed quiet till Aarav came back and left for his office without speaking a word, but he did glance at Anaisha before leaving, which Aarav noticed.
"Let's go home," said Aarav, while picking up his files and bag.
"Yeah sure, Bhai. You go and wait for me in the parking lot, I'll go and bid my friends bye," said Anaisha. Aarav mumbled okay and she went to meet her friends.
Pretty much like Anaisha, her batch mates were completely exhausted as well and had no energy to even move. They all called it day and bid bye and went to their respective homes. It was their first day and they were already tired, what will they do the entire year? Welcome to the world of Doctors, kids!
When Anaisha reached her home, she was tired like anything! She hugged her mom and said wearily, "I'm tired as hell mom! Today was the worst day of my life!"
Her mom, Khushi patted her shoulder and asked, "What happened, dear?"
"Let's go to my room, I'll narrate you everything," said Anaisha and both of them moved toward her room. Settling on her bed, Annie narrated everything to her mom, though she didn't complain about her day but just shared her experience.
Her mom stroked her hairs and said softly, "Look, baby, it might be that Kabir wasn't in a good mood or maybe you are just thinking too much. That Dr. Kabir is actually Aarav's best friend and a very nice guy. He's your dad's friend, Karan and Shilpa's son. There might be some issue otherwise he's very sweet and polite. I've known Kabir for so long and as far as I know him, he's not someone who goes around taking revenges from people or hurting them. And he even helped with the ointment thing, right?"
"Maybe, Mom, but he was very horrible and rude today. He made my first day completely nightmarish. I swear if he ever crossed my path again, I'll kill him," grumbled Anaisha with her hands crossed against her chest.
"Acha, okay. Chalo now let's go downstairs. It's dinner time now," said Khushi and both of them moved downstairs to the dining area.
The dinner went well, with the conversations only concentrated over Anaisha and Aarush's first day in their respective jobs. Aarush was equally tired as Anaisha due to his father, Arnav making him work like a robot on the very first day.
After the dinner, both Anaisha and Aarush quickly left for their rooms, too tired to stay awake for long. Anaisha switched off the lights and lied on her bed. Just as she was closing her eyes, her phone buzzed and she picked up her phone to see Neha calling her. She answered the call and said hello, expecting to hear Neha's voice but it wasn't just Neha but the entire gang who were on the call as it was a conference call.
They all were speaking at the same time and Annie was not getting a single word so she interrupted them up after a few minutes. "Guys, it will be much better if you all speak one by one because I'm not getting even a single word," said Anaisha calmly.
They all realized that none of them was able to hear what the other person was saying. They apologised and then spoke properly. The call went on for some fifteen minutes about their duties today, Anaisha didn't share much altered out the morgue incident, which made Nikhil suspicious but she covered up it. All of them ended the call soon after with good night wishes.
Due to the call, Anaisha's sleep went away and she wasn't feeling sleepy at all, so she picked her diary up and started scribbling in it. She was scribbling something in her diary, when Aarav came in to check her as her lights were on. He settled beside Anaisha and in a soft tone asked, "What are you writing, Chhoti?"
"Nothing, Bhai, just scribbling," Anaisha replied.
Then neither of them said anything and a few minutes passed in silence. A little embarrassed, Aarav mumbled, "Look, Chhoti, I know what happened today was unfortunate and I feel really bad for that. But it wasn't Kabir's fault. Mom had told me what you told her and I agree with her. Maybe Kabir was in a bad mood since morning and then that fight with you spoiled his mood even more. He's always calm and well-behaved but maybe your luck that he was stressed today and took his frustration out on you. But please don't think that he's a bad guy or something, he's a really kind-hearted person." He paused and then added, "And would you do something if I ask you?"
Anaisha was keenly listening to what her brother was telling her. While on their way to home, she had asked him about Kabir and he had told her that they were best friends. But she didn't tell him any other thing because she didn't want her elder brother to think that she was being a cry baby. But her mom na couldn't stay silent and filled him with everything Anaisha had told her.
"I understand what you are saying, Bhai. Maybe it was my fault too. I shouldn't have reacted like that in cafeteria. He's my senior and I'm supposed to follow his orders and do my work sincerely. It's just that it was my first day and he made me work so hard. But leave it! What do you want me to do by the way?" asked Anaisha to her brother with a small weary smile.
"I know, Kabir was as much at fault as you. But you should never disrespect anyone no matter what be, so please apologise to him. He too was guilty for his act. So it will be better if you both apologise to each other and end this fight. I hope you're getting what I'm saying?" said Aarav with an expression which made Annie assume that there was something about Kabir, she didn't know a thing about and Aarav wasn't intending on sharing it with her.
And thinking about what Aarav said, maybe her brother was right but still Kabir had no rights to behave with her like that. It was the worst day of her life. And the credit for it goes to Dr. Kabir Thapar.
But still, she didn't want to offend her brother and sighingly said, "Okay, I will. Happy?"
"Very! Now, keep your diary aside and sleep. You need a good amount of rest, internship is not at all easy," mumbled Aarav.
Anaisha nodded and lied back down. Pecking her forehead, Aarav switch off the lights and left her room. After he left, Anaisha lied on her back and stared at the ceiling, thinking whether she really should apologise to Kabir or not. Her mind was split in two halves, one that said she should apologise and other which rejected this idea. Thinking about all this, she didn't know when she fell asleep. But before she fell asleep, she knew her brother was right and as soon as she get an opportunity, she'll apologise to Kabir, though she was sure, there something strange about Kabir, whose reason she couldn't decipher as to what.
