Chapter 7 || Pay Back Time
After exiting the cafeteria, Kabir was on his way toward his cabin when he heard someone call him "Bir". Knowing well it was one of his close friends, He turned back to find his best friend, Aarav, standing near the door of a private ward, trying his best to suppress his laugh. Was he looking really funny or Aarav was a retard? Kabir wondered.
"To be honest, I really didn't know Bir that you love your shirt and face so much that you actually started feeding them coffee and cake as well," chortled Aarav.
Kabir frowned, not really in the mood of replying back with the same humour as Aarav. He scoffed. Why was everyone so hell bent on making him even angrier?
"It's not at all funny, Avi. So please would you stop irritating me now? I've to go and change my clothes. And then I have to go for briefing the joining interns," said Kabir irritably.
Aarav noticed Kabir's seriousness in his voice and decided not to irk his already irked best friend even more. He knew Bir very well, it was best to leave him alone when he was in a foul mood. Having known Kabir for a really long time, over some 20 years, Aarav knew him quite well. Their fathers were childhood friends, so they too, like their fathers, became friends and were each other's classmate since 3rd grade. And so Aarav understood his best friend really well, much more than any other person in Kabir's life, obviously except his GM.
And as a matter of fact, he knew well that Kabir wasn't one with a hot temper, rather he was one of the calmest people, though certain situations could be kept as exceptions. Kabir's current state, was pretty much part of that exception list and Aarav knew it was better not to probe him more.
But anyway, whatever it was, he'd ask Bir later, as now if he asked him then surely Bir wouldn't be so pleased with it!
"Yeah, you should go and change your clothes. I'm sure, if Anuj or Shaina saw you like this, then it'll be really hard for them to stop laughing or you to forget this incident," snorted Aarav.
"Thank you so much, Aarav, for informing me this and, for giving me the privilege to go and change my clothes or else I thought I might have to brief those interns in this lovely state my shirt is in," said Kabir with his usual sarcasm.
Aarav then realised what Kabir had told him about the briefing things and exclaimed, "Hey, you are briefing the interns, then let me remind you that my Chhoti is also a part of this new batch of interns."
Kabir scratched the back of his neck as he recalled of Avi telling him about his younger sister, joining the hospital but he didn't know when she was joining. "What's her real name?" asked Kabir confusedly.
He knew that Aarav and his younger brothers called his only sister 'Chhoti' but he never came to know her actual name or probably never was bothered to even ask as he didn't get to see her much, not as if he cared.
He waited for Aarav to reply. But before Aarav could answer him, his pager buzzed, Emergency! He looked at Kabir and in a frenzy tone said, "Emergency, dude! Just see the surname and you'll know who's my sister. See ya later!" Aarav quickly left from there after saying that.
Kabir shrugged his shoulders and shaking his head went to his office to change his clothes. Still fuming over the cafeteria fiasco, with the same angry mood, he walked inside his office. Taking a fresh, well ironed sky blue coloured shirt and a pair of dark grey trousers, he went inside his office washroom and changed his clothes.
He mentally thanked his own self for having the mind to keep some spare clothes in his office for emergencies like this one. Buttoning his shirt up, he washed his face to remove all that chocochip and pastries. Once his face was clear of all the traces of chocochip pastries, he wiped his face and picked his ruined white shirt and coffee covered trousers and kept them in a handbag, for sending it for laundry.
Feeling a surge of anger toward that stupid insensitive girl, he gritted his teeth. No one had ever talked with him like that, but that girl had humiliated him badly. The images of the incident flashed infront of his eyes, making feel even more resentful toward her.
Fisting his hands, he took a deep breath to calm himself down, which worked and he walked out of the washroom. Completely forgetting about the orientation thing, he settled in his chair and flipped open the pages of one of his patients' file.
While reading, he glanced at the clock kept on his table which showed 9:55 am. He felt as if was forgetting something important and then it hit him!
Damn it! Due to all this mess, he forgot about the briefing thing. Because of that stupid girl, he had forgotten about the briefing thing and wasted so much of his precious time. Okay, not exactly that much time but still for him, his each and every minute mattered a lot.
He swiftly wore his lab coat and rushed out of his cabin. When he was moving out of his office, a ward boy came and informed him that he had to collect the new interns' files from the Admin office. So he went to collect them before heading toward the nurse station.
Anaisha was still fuming over the cafeteria incident when she entered Aashika's cabin, who was shocked seeing her cousin sister all drenched in coffee and pastries.
"What happened, Annie? You guys were supposed to eat the pastries, not play Holi with them!" exclaimed Aashi.
"Didda, I'll tell you about it later. Right now, what's more important is that I need to change my dress before my duty start. Do you have any spare dress?" asked Anaisha, her dismay with her coffee covered dress evident.
Nodding her head, Aashi replied, "Okay, we'll talk about it later. I guess, I have a spare dress. Let me get you that."
Anaisha shook her head, and waited for Aashi to retrieve her dress from her locker. While waiting, she absentmindedly kept her hand on forearm, and a hiss escaped her lips as Kabir's hot coffee had fallen on her arm.
Aashi noticed that, and with the spare dress, brought a small box of medicines. Forwarding the dress to Anaisha, with concern, Aashi said, "Baby, there's a burn on your arm, let me put ointment there. Or else it'll hurt you."
But Annie was in hurry, and denied her sister's help by saying, "It's okay, Didda. I'll manage that later. Let me change now."
Rushing inside the washroom attached to Aashi's office, Anaisha quickly changed her dress. She came out of the washroom wearing a floral print knee length dress and in a gratitude filled voice said, "Thank you so much, Didda! You're the best!"
"You're welcome, sweetie! Now go!" said Aashi smilingly.
Annie grinned and ran out of Aashi's cabin with her lab coat and stethoscope clutched in her hands. Aashi leaned against the door of her office, chuckling at her baby sister's antics. No matter how much grown she'd be, she'll always be her baby.
Anaisha ran fast toward the nurse station, looking at her watch occasionally as she was getting late for her briefing. Cursing the rude cafeteria man, she made her way to where her friends were waiting. Standing next to her new friend and batch mate, Nikhil, in a hushed tone, she asked, "Nikhil, where's Dr. Rai? He's our reporting doctor, right?"
"Yes, Dr. Rai is our reporting doctor, Annie. We've been waiting for him since last fifteen minutes, but still no one came here," replied Nikhil.
She shook her head and in a bashful tone said, "Strange. I've heard from my brother and cousin sister that Dr. Rai is one of the most punctual doctors of NLHRC. I don't know why he's late today."
"Yeah, Yuvraj had told me that. Dunno why he's late. Anyway, all we could do is wait," said Nikhil in the same bashful tone.
Anaisha nodded and patiently stood beside her batch mates, waiting for the reporting doctor. As the reporting doctor was nowhere in sight, she thought to entertain herself and her batch mates. Turning to her friend Rhea, she made a funny face, making Rhea laugh and drawing the attention of her other batch mates, who chuckled seeing her funny expressions. Neha, another batch mate of Anaisha, joined her and together, they entertained the other batch mates.
Anaisha was making a funny face again, when her eyes caught the sight of the 'Coffee Guy'. She rolled her eyes thinking that why couldn't he just leave her alone? Already he spoilt her morning and now why the hell he was coming here? But then a thought came crossed her mind and she gasped.
Glancing back at him, she now noticed that he had files in his hands and was wearing a lab coat. That meant he was a doctor of this hospital. And then, he had files and was coming in her and batch mates' direction, was he their reporting doctor?
Her jaws dropped. No, no, no, he couldn't be her reporting doctor. Lord have mercy on her! Still unable to believe this, she elbowed Yuvraj, who was standing beside her and whispered to him, "Is he our reporting doctor? Please say no! I thought Dr. Rai is our reporting doctor!"
Yuvraj weakly smiled at her and quietly said, "Unfortunately, Dr. Kabir is our reporting doctor for today. Dr. Rai's busy with surgeries so he can't brief us. You know that's why I was telling you to apologise to him! But you...leave it! Can't do anything now since the damage's been done!"
Anaisha just stood transfixed at her place after Yuvraj's revelation. She felt like she would pass out now. Too much to handle! If it was in her power then she would've disappeared. But hey, she wasn't someone to run away. She'll face this with a brave face. Be it whoever he was!
After collecting the files from the Admin office, Kabir headed for the nurse station. He saw the same 'Chocochip Girl' standing there with her mates, making some funny faces. For a minute, he forgot his anger toward her, and amusedly smiled a small smile.
But then the flashes of the fight came back to him, and he felt enraged again, but not as much as earlier, since it was hard for him to not smile with her comical expressions. As she continued making funny faces, he halted on his tracks some feet away from the nurse station, his eyes unwavering from her. But reluctantly, he tore his eyes away from her and saw the same group of youngsters with standing with her.
So he was right about them being the interns. And that girl too was wearing a lab coat. This only meant one thing, she was an intern. He smirked, knowing well he had gotten his opportunity to teach her a good lesson for messing with him.
He's my Reporting Doctor! Oh no!
She's my intern! Oh yes!
Well now the ball was in his court. Smirkingly, he walked toward her and the other interns, glancing at her one more time. He had asked for a chance to teach her a lesson only some minutes ago but he didn't know that chance will come so soon. Well for the first time God had listened to him!
On the other hand, all the interns except Yuvraj stood there astonished. Only Yuvraj was aware of the fact that Dr. Kabir had been assigned as their reporting doctor for today. He would've informed his batch mates only if that cafeteria drama hadn't happened.
While others were astounded, for Annie, shock would be an understatement. Apart from her, rest of the interns knew he was a senior doctor here but they weren't aware that he was their reporting doctor. Neither Annie nor her batch mates could believe that the cafeteria guy was their reporting doctor. What a luck they had!
"Though we all have met before but then again, good morning, interns," said Kabir, giving them a small, warm smile.
"Good morning, Sir!" He was grateful that they didn't wish him like those school going kids, because the previous batch was like that only, whom he had briefed twice.
"So, I guess, by now you all must have realised that I'm a senior doctor here and will be your reporting doctor for today and if the management wants then for the entire period of your internship," Kabir purposely paused for a moment to have a good look at Anaisha's gobsmacked face as he had intentionally added that he could be their reporting doctor for the rest of the internship period, which he knew won't happen.
"So let's start with the introductions. My name's Dr. Kabir Thapar and I am the attending Cardiac Surgeon in NLHRC. Now one by one, you all give your introductions, along with the name of the college you've done your MBBS from, and then we'll proceed with our briefing session, after which I'll assign your duties," added Kabir and motioned them through his hands to start the introductions.
As stated earlier, it was a batch of 6 interns, 3 boys and 3 girls. Since Shivam, who was nearly as tall as Kabir, was standing next to Kabir, he gave his introduction first. "Dr. Shivam Sethi, VMMC (Vardhman Mahavir Medical College), New Delhi."
Kabir gave him a small nod and then proceeded to the next intern, an enthusiastic Neha, who was slightly shorter than Anaisha. "Dr. Neha Shergill, MAMC (Maulana Azad Medical College), New Delhi."
Next was the rejoiced Yuvraj, for whom Kabir was like a dream mentor. "Dr. Yuvraj Oberoi, AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Science), New Delhi."
After him, was a shy and nervous Rhea's turn, who stammeringly gave her introduction. "I-I a-am Dr. R-Rhea K-Kashyap, LHMC (Lady Hardinge Medical College), New Delhi."
She looked down at her feet, embarrassed.
Feeling a little sympathetic toward her, Kabir passed her a soft smile and soothingly said, "It's okay. Happens!"
Nikhil's turn was after her, "Dr. Nikhil Malhotra, UCL Medical School, London, UK."
A frown came on Kabir's face as now only one intern was left for the introduction, that mindless girl. Did that mean she was Aarav's sister, Chhoti? He'd mentally groaned at this idea.
"Dr. Anaisha Gujral, Imperial College School of Medicine, London, UK," said Kabir's new nemesis nonchalantly.
As soon as her name made itself get registered in his mind, the awesome feeling that he felt some time ago, went away. In this big world, only she had to be Avi's sister. Really, God never listened to him, he whined like a kid.
He saw her look confidently at him, and he slyly grinned. Even if she was Aarav's Chhoti, it didn't mean he won't punish her. He will but just in a little less stringent manner. She really should know what it's like to mess with Dr. Kabir Thapar!
"Okay. Now, lets start with the orientation," said Kabir and then for next 30 minutes, he briefed them about the hospital, their job as a junior doctor, rules and regulations. Then it was time to assign them duties. Since he had been told by the Admin that he could assign duties to them as per his choice as it was their first day, he knew what he was supposed to do. He smiled inwardly as now Ms. Mindless-With-Big-Fat-Ego would get an amazing dose of torture which will make her remember this day for the rest of her life. His evil mind started planning his tricks, for his revenge on this little arrogant girl.
Finishing the orientation, he assigned all the interns their duties, except Anaisha, who was sure he was upto no good.
"Dr. Anaisha, you will be my intern today. I hope you will prove to be a good intern," said Kabir slyly with hints of deceitfulness, as he would make sure Anaisha remember this day for the rest of her life.
Giving him a defeated look, Anaisha looked down. She knew there was nothing she could do. But she won't back off now. She'll show him who he had messed with! And then, something clicked in her mind and a smile came on her lips. She knew nothing irked your enemy more than your smile.
Passing him one of her sweetest smiles, Anaisha started planning her counterattack. Surely, the ball Mr. You-Drenched-My-Shirt's court, but she wasn't a damsel in distress. Being the strong headed and courageous girl, she won't allow him to get the upper hand with such ease.
Kabir's smile faded a bit seeing her not affected by his trick. He looked at the interns and in a stern voice said, "That's all for now. Disperse and report to your duties in 15 minutes!"
Shooting one last look in Anaisha's direction, he left from there.
Anaisha and the other interns moved from there toward the locker room. Nikhil, who was standing near Annie, concernedly asked, "You okay, Annie? I mean Dr. Kabir assigned you as his interns so ... ?"
Anaisha looked at him and with an assuring smile, said coolly, "Don't worry, Nikhil. All's fine with me." Though, she wasn't sure how cool it would be after reporting to Kabir, because despite her planning her counterattack, she didn't know what he was upto.
Nikhil nodded at her and turned to take his ID card from his locker while talking to Shivam about their respective colleges.
Nervously, Yuvraj, who heard Anaisha and Nikhil's conversation, wrapped his hands on her shoulders and said, "Our Annie is a fighter! None of us have to worry for her. She'll manage everything, right Annie?"
Everyone turned their attention to Anaisha and Yuvraj, as Annie was glaring at Yuvraj. She was already pissed with Yuvraj for not telling her about Kabir before and when he said this, her anger increased even more. She harshly slapped his arm and grumbled, "You dork! It's your fault! If you had told me before only that he's our senior then maybe I would've sorted it out with him there only. But now I don't know what's gonna happen with me. Though I reckon nothing would happen, but still."
"Look, Annie, the damage's been done and now all you can do is do some damage control. That's only thing that's in your power," said Rhea, in a very calm voice.
Agreeingly, Neha added, "Rhea's right, Annie! Just keep yourself calm and please try not to piss Dr. Kabir more. He was already very much pissed because of the Cafeteria incident. So just be calm and relax."
Shivam and Nikhil nodded their heads and said in unison, "All the best, Annie! You'll surely manage this well!"
Annie looked at her friends and with a small smile, said, "Thank you guys! I'll try my best to not upset Dr. Thapar more. Will try my best to keep my cool and do my work well!"
"See, I told you na, you'll manage perfectly," said Yuvraj, trying to pacify his irritated friend, whom he knew for last three years, because of his older brother, Dr. Anuj Oberoi.
"We'll talk about it later, Yuvraj," said Annie, glaring at Yuvraj. Yuvraj averted his gaze from her and decided to stay quiet because one more word and this girl would kill him.
"I think, guys, we should go and report to our duties now. I hope you guys don't wanna be late," said Shivam, pointing at his watch.
The other interns nodded their heads and picked up their stuffs. Wishing each other good luck, they all left to report to their duties.
Taking deep breaths to ease herself up, Anaisha walked to Kabir's office, with a vague fear in her heart.
"It'll be cool, Anaisha. You'll do fine. Don't be scared of this unchivalrous man. You'll be fine," Anaisha told herself, before knocking Dr. Kabir Thapar's office door.
"Come in," came the stern voice of Dr. Kabir Thapar and Anaisha walked inside, wondering what Kabir had planned for her. But only Kabir knew the answer for this question, and Anaisha would come to know it, soon.
