Prologue
All stories have a beginning and an end. The end could very well also be the beginning. It does not matter who tells your story, just as long as your story is told. Desiree Laurens and Athenodora Marquise de Lafayette died, believing in this. Now, as the two girls lie dead, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, stand over their bodies, tears in their eyes. "It wasn't supposed to happen like this. They weren't supposed to die." Alexander said, quietly.
Aaron didn't say anything. He just stared at the girls. "Theodosia is going to kill me." He said. Alexander didn't say anything to the man. He just stood in silence, as he looked at the bodies of his oldest friends. "Why were you aiming toward the sky?" Aaron asked. The question had been bugging him. He wanted to know why Alexander wouldn't fight. "That was the way my son died. It felt only fitting that I die as he did." Alexander said.
The air grew silent between the two. "We have to take them back." The doctor said, standing beside the two men. Alexander and Aaron nodded, the tears having escaped their eyes. Desiree and Athenodora were rowed back across the Hudson, while the two men stood and relived the events of what had just happened. Their families had yet to learn of what had happened to the two, but there is no doubt that they would learn soon enough.
The memories of what could've been flashes in Alexander's mind. He should be the one dead. Not Desiree. Not Athenodora. In a way, the girl's deaths had been his fault. He accepted the challenge of the duel, and he went on to participate in the duel. He had very well killed his friends. There was no changing what had happened on July 11, 1804. There was no turning back the hands of time to save Athenodora and Desiree.
Their story will be told. It will be told for years, until there is no one left to tell it. The last person to tell the girls story were Desiree and Athenodora themselves. They started their story, and they ended their story. A great author once wrote 'I open at the close' That is the truth of Athenodora and Desiree's story. I open at the close.
