Chapter Five

About two moons passed since Spottedpaw went to the moonstone with Featherwhisker, meeting the other medicine cats of the Clans. The medicine apprentice woke up to the sound of a shriek. She raised her head from her paws, ears perked up as she stared at the entrance to the medicine den. Featherwhisker came into the den a few heartbeats later.

"What was that?" Spottedpaw asked her mentor.

"Bluefur has just started kitting," Featherwhisker replied. "Could you take some coltsfoot and a stick with you? Bluefur's in the nursery." The medicine cat then darted off. Without hesitating, Spottedpaw trotted over to the herb pile. She found a small bundle of coltsfoot and picked them up in her jaws. I'll come back for the stick, she decided and darted out of the medicine den, dashing over to the nursery. She noticed Bluefur lying on her side with Featherwhisker next to her. The dark tortoiseshell trotted over to Featherwhisker, placing the bundle of coltsfoot next to him.

"I'm going back to the medicine den to get the stick," she told the medicine cat.

"Okay," Featherwhisker mewed as Spottedpaw darted out of the medicine den.

"Hi, Spotted --" Redpaw was cut off by a dashing Spottedpaw.

"Sorry but I can't talk!" Spottedpaw could tell Redpaw was staring at her as she scurried into the medicine den. She looked around the den for the stick Featherwhisker had told her to get. Where -- oh, there it is! The apprentice found the stick by a small pile of fresh moss and picked it out, darting out of the medicine den and into the nursery once again. She placed the stick by Featherwhisker's paws.

"Give Bluefur the --" the medicine cat was cut off by a shriek from Bluefur. "Not now!" A small scrap of grey fur lay on the ground, mewling helplessly.

"Lick it to keep it warm," Featherwhisker instructed his apprentice. Spottedpaw started licking the kit as it mewed. Featherwhisker gave Bluefur the stick. A blue-grey scrap of fur started mewling. Spottedpaw realised it looked just like Bluefur. Spottedpaw started licking the blue-grey scrap of fur as it let out a mew.

"One more," Featherwhisker mewed to Bluefur. The grey kit which Spottedpaw had first locked started squirming about as it let out little mews. Now a lighter blue-grey scrap of fur was in the nursery, remaining silent.

"I-is it dead?" Bluefur questioned. Featherwhisker examined the kit.

"No," he then replied to Bluefur's relief. Spottedpaw began licking the kit to keep it warm. As she did, it let out a tiny mew.

"They're all healthy," Spottedpaw mewed like she was the medicine cat. "There's two toms and one she-kit."

"We'll check to see how they're doing regularly," Featherwhisker put in. "If there's any problems with them like they stop breathing, report it to us as soon as you can."

"Okay," Bluefur rasped.

"Come, Spottedpaw," Featherwhisker mewed, picking up the stick and began trotting out of the nursery. Spottedpaw picked up the bundle of coltsfoot that weren't even used at all and trotted after Featherwhisker. When she got into the medicine den, her mentor was already in it, dropping the stick next to the pile of moss.

"You did well," Featherwhisker mewed to Spottedpaw.

"Thanks," Spottedpaw mewed as she dropped the bundle of coltsfoot in the herb pile. Just then Sunstar yowled a Clan meeting. Spottedpaw trotted out of the medicine den and noticed that a lot of cats hard gathered quite quickly. Spottedpaw spotted Tigerpaw who had became a warrior just less than a moon ago, receiving Tigerclaw as his warrior name. The dark brown tabby was sitting near Redpaw and Brindlepaw, who seemed to be pretty close to each other lately. Spottedpaw couldn't see Willowpaw among the crowd of cats. Sunstar began to speak again.

"Redpaw," Sunstar called the apprentice's name. Redpaw looked up and then began walking up to Sunstar. "I, Sunstar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down at this apprentice. He has understood of your noble code and I commend him to be made a warrior in his return. Redpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life?"

"I do," Redpaw mewed confidently.

"Then, by the power of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Redpaw, from this day on you'll be known as Redtail. StarClan honours your loyalty and bravely, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan." Redtail puffed out his chest and then Sunstar called Willowpaw up. Brindlepaw was called up last.

"Redtail! Willowpelt! Brindleface!" the Clan chanted. Spottedpaw noticed that Thistleclaw did not chant at all. Something about Thistleclaw made Spottedpaw scared of the warrior. Sunstar called the ceremony to an end and cats began to walk away. Redtail and Willowpelt were walking together and Spottedpaw walked over to them.

"Congratulations, Redtail, Willowpelt!"

"Thanks," Willowpelt mewed.

"I've got to go see Brindleface. Bye, Spottedpaw and Willowpelt," Redtail mewed and began walking away from his littermates.

"Redtail and Brindleface are close," Willowpelt mewed. So are you and Whitestorm, Spottedpaw thought but didn't say it to Willowpelt.

"Yeah," she then agreed with her littermate.
