Mission Accepted
Lydia sat in the waiting room of Mr Bergenstein, one of the richest men in the world. She vaguely knew what he wanted. vaguely. All she knows is that she has been working with a group of scientist these last couple of months on something that she reckons will never work.
A man who looked like he was in his forties walked in holding a file. Lydia stood up.
"Miss Sanders, i presume?" The man said. She nodded."Well Miss Sandors, Mr Bergenstien will see you now." he motioned towards the door. Lydia stood up and followed the man whom she believed was Mr Bergenstein's assistant through the long hallway and into the elevator. The huge iron doors slowly clasped shut. He pressed a keypad on the side of the wall and in an instant the the elevator jolted upwards. She fell backwards onto the metal railing. "Ow!" she she said instinctively. The man, who had no even moved a muscle since the elevator had started moving, turned his big bald head towards her, looking at her in disgust. Embarrassed, she stood up straight and looked down. the elevator opened, and they got out quickly, moving through the silent surgical white hallways. They speak a word for the rest of the journey.
When they got to Mr Bergenstein's office he motioned for her to stop before going into Mr Bergensteins office. what seemed like hours later (even though it was only two minutes) She was called inside. Nervously, she walked into the large room that was decorated in mahoghany walls and furniture.
"Miss Sanders, please sit" The big burly man said in a hoarse voice. Lydia did as she was instructed and sat on one of the chairs beside the ridiculously large desk.
"Do you know why you are here, Miss Sanders?" Mr Bergenstein asked.
"Sort of Sir" She replied. Mr Bergenstien was actually quite scary. He wore a grey suit with a crisp blue shirt underneath, with newly polished leather shoes. he had a big enough stomach, creepily white teeth and a hoarse voice. He shifted in his seat.
"You are here Miss Sanders, because you have been chosen to test the experiment!" he spoke excitingly.
"I'm the test subject?!" She asked incredulously.
"Yes! isn't that great?" He said, sounding like a seven year old boy all of a sudden. A huge difference from the scary man she met a few minutes ago.
"No that is not great!" she almost yelled. "What if something goes wrong? What if i die out there? This is so not fair!"
"Miss Sanders! are you refusing my offer to do the most amazing thing man has ever done? You could be famous, rich. You are under debt to me miss sanders.let me tell you that what you will be doing is a far step up from traveling to the moon. Anyone else would snap up the opportunity to do what you will be doing. Is that clear?"
"But Sir-"
"IS THAT CLEAR?!" He yelled
"Yes Sir" Lydia said hanging her head. This man was infuriating!
"Good, now go, we must prepare you for your journey" he said, softly.
Lydia walked slowly out of the room, the doors making a soft pffed noise as they close behind her. This man was insane, overrun by power, unable to stop himself. She may be going to observe in his mind, but she, was going to make sure that men like him never tilt this city further than it already has.
With a new sense of determination, Lydia strut down the clean lines hallways back into the elevator, where this time, she was ready. Her hair went up in a flurry and her grip on the railing tightened. She, was on a mission.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
She was escorted down to the laboratory, where she was greeted by Rupert, the head scientist that was looking at her with sad eyes.
"I'm sorry you have to do this" was the words he spoke as she approached him.
"Do not think of it in that way. I am merely paying a debt"
" what did you do that makes you go through all of this?" He asked
"That is not important" she said dismissively. He nodded, understanding her wish.
Rupert led Lydia towards a room, where she was supposedly to 'train' and prepare. The walls were lined with weapons and survival equipment, such as satchels, pocket knives and listening devices. Lydia felt like a spy of James Bond, giving her a tingle of excitement.
Through a pair of doors by the pocket knives, was another room, with a double bed, a large table and a bathroom. This is where she would be staying for the next couple of weeks before she travels in that wretched machine. She flopped down onto the bed and let out a long pained sigh. If only things were different. She lay there for hours, pondering change.
Oh how she wished she wasn't in this mess. Eventually, after all of the thoughts and tears that were tearing her apart she fell into a blissful sleep. For anyone to walk in one this moment, she would be seen as happy. But her tear stained cheeks said otherwise.
Sleep overwhelmed her, giving her dreams of hope and happiness, letting her hold on to that thin string of hope that hung onto for dear life.
Lydia was not one to give up. She would fight for what was right and for her freedom. For her hope,
And for her happiness. Her light was faint but it still shined. After all, She, Lydia Sanders was on a Mission...
