Eighty Four-Change
Amethyst's pov
I hated the fact that Opal and Sugilite graduated.
It meant one thing, and one thing only; they'd be going to college. The second that Sugilite left, I'd be on my own. I knew it, and everybody else knew it too.
"Hey Amethyst, could you help me with dinner?" Tahitia asked the night they graduated. Opal and Sugi went out with some of their friends for dinner that night, and Pearl was in her room reading more parenting books even though she wasn't even the one with a baby sister.
"Eh, sure I guess." I turned off the TV and walked into the kitchen. "Whatcha makin?"
"I was thinking about tacos, and I need some help cutting up the vegetables." She said, already cooking the beef.
"Aight then." I pulled the step stool up to the counter and started cutting up the tomatoes.
"You must be so proud of Sugilite. I know I am." Tahitia said casually.
"Yeah." I already knew what was coming next.
"Amethyst... Sugilite will be going away to college in the fall..." With my next slice I brought the knife down hard, making Tahitia jump.
"Oh! I wasn't expecting that..."
"I know that Sugilite's going away. And..." I sighed. "I know that means that I have to go back." Tahitia sighed.
"I wish you didn't. I really do. But as it is, we're lucky that he hasn't called the police yet." I wasn't going to cry.
"That's the only thing I can think of that's worse than going back." I looked up at Tahitia. "What if he doesn't even want me? What if I have to go to a foster home?" I started crying. "What if they split me away from my sister?" Tahitia hugged me.
"I don't want you to have to go back to him either. And even if he doesn't want you, I want you. I love you Amethyst." I hugged her back.
"I love you too, mom." I gasped and pulled away. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry! It's just that... Well, you're probably the closest thing to a parent I've ever had." I looked back up at Tahitia. She was crying too.
"Amethyst..."
"Oh God, please don't cry! I-I can't handle it when people cry!" She hugged me again.
"I wish I could be the mom you need. I'm sorry but I think that I care about you a whole hell of a lot more than your parents do." I nodded.
"Please don't make me go!" I whispered. Tahitia kept crying into my ear.
"I can't." We sat there in silence for a moment.
"The meat is burning!" Pearl suddenly yelled from the hallway. Tahitia pulled away quickly and went back to cooking. I finished cutting the tomatoes and started cutting the lettuce. Pearl came into the kitchen.
"Honestly, you two can be so forgetful."
