Eighty Five-Steven

Pearl's pov

It was almost three in the morning when the first call came.

Steven Quartz DeMayo, a healthy baby boy, was born.

Opal, mother and I were beside ourselves with joy, but it took some convincing to get Amethyst and Sugilite to wake up so early during their summer break.

"I'm glad you're not still upset that Greg's the father." Opal smiled as we crowed into our small bathroom to brush our teeth.

"I'll admit, Gregory can be bearable... Occasionally." I replied, rinsing my mouth.

I stepped out of the bathroom and went back upstairs to find a comfortable yet presentable pair of shoes, aggravating Amethyst as I turned on the light.

"Do you have to?" She asked groggily from her air mattress.

"Yes, actually."

It was true what Opal had said, I had overcome my issues and was ready to accept Greg as the father of Rose's child.

Rose had always been so kind and loving to everyone, and we had been each other's confidante when nobody but her would dare speak to me. She was the first person there when I was allowed visitors in the hospital.

I was confident that she would be an excellent mother, and I was ready to love her child just as much as I knew she would.

It was almost four thirty in the morning when the second call came.

Rose Amelia Quartz, a loving sixteen year old girl, had died.

I couldn't recall ever feeling as devastated. Somebody who had been there for me for years was gone.

"Pearl... There were some complications during the birth..." My mother had began, her voice wavering. From the tone of her voice during the phone call I knew something was wrong. From the tone of her voice then, I knew Rose was gone.

I collapsed to the ground, shrieking. Opal and my mother stared at me, helpless, but silently bawling all the same.

We didn't go to the hospital. We didn't visit Steven. I didn't eat. Opal refuse to leave her room.

After a week of despair, I finally worked up the courage to speak.

"Opal?" I asked quietly, my voice quivering as I stood in the doorway to her bedroom. She rolled over and looked at me.

"I haven't felt so awful since I thought I'd lost you." Another wave of tears came cascading over the both of us, and I made my way to her bed so I could curl up beside her.

"She's really gone..." I breathed. Opal shook her head.

"I know."

"It doesn't... Feel like she's gone." Opal frowned.

"But she is." I thought for a moment.

"Do you think... Do you think it hurt?" Opal looked at me.

"For her to die?" I nodded. "Mom talked to Mrs. Quartz on the phone. She said that Rose was so happy that she got to meet Steven, and that she said she was willing to die if it meant Steven could live in her place."

"Do you think it hurt her family?" I asked. Opal sighed.

"Definitely. They may have gotten a new member of their family, but they lost one. And I don't think any of them were too happy when Rose got pregnant." Opal was quiet for a moment. Then finally whispered, "They're getting a divorce." I looked up at her once more.

"Why? I asked, shocked. Opal shook her head.

"It's been imminent for years, Pearl. This just made it worse."

"Oh..." When I thought back, I had noticed some flaws in their marriage. "Rainbow must feel awful..." I said quietly. "Her sister just died, and now her parents are getting a divorce."

"Steven's going with Greg." Opal said. I shuddered.

"I don't like that. He's a high school dropout and he doesn't live with his family." Opal pulled her arm around me.

"He loves Steven though. And it looks like he's the only family the little guy's got."

(A/N) One of the three deaths has occurred. I'm excited.
