Eighty Eight-A Rose By Any Other Name
Pearl's pov
"I refuse to see him!" I shouted, standing at the top of the stairs.
"Pearl, please." Opal pleaded. "Do it for Rose."
"Pearl sweetheart I know you're upset but just come on." My father's presence did nothing to console me. Mother and Opal had reached out to him and he had decided to accompany us to the hospital to visit Rose's son.
"I already said that I want nothing to do with it!" Somebody downstairs let out an exasperated sigh, and there was some quiet conversation.
"Pearl baby," It was Sugilite who finally spoke. "Do you want me to drop you off at Peri's with Amethyst?" I thought for a moment.
"Yes, please." I finally joined the others downstairs. Mother tried to get me to eat but I refused.
"I love you, honey." She said, embracing me. When the time came to leave, she and Opal entered my father's car while I entered Sugilite's with Amethyst.
Once Sugilite dropped us off, I rushed inside. Peridot was sitting in the living room watching a science-fiction movie when Amethyst and I arrived. She turned it off and grinned when she saw us, but her grin fell when she saw my face.
"Pearl? What's wrong?" She asked, standing up.
"Peridot, I..." I was at a loss for words.
"Are you okay?" Without thinking, I instinctively wrapped my arms around her tight. Had I been thinking straight I wouldn't have, as Peridot hated excessive contact, however the most urgent thought on my mind was how upset I was.
Surprisingly, after a moment of unease, Peridot relaxed. I was shocked when she wrapped her arms around me.
"I'm here for you, Pearl." She said. "I... I love you."
Crying, I sat down and told her everything, from how much I admired Rose, to how devastating her death was.
"I know this is terrible, but... I blame Steven." I admitted. "It's horrible to think that he's a newborn baby whom I've never met, but already I hate him." Peridot nodded.
"Pearl, I know I don't say this often, but it's okay to have feelings. Um... I mean... It's okay to be upset. I was so upset when I learned why Em abandoned me, and I thought it was wrong..." She said, looking at the ground. "But when I thought about it, I had every right to be upset. She abandoned me." Peridot paused in thought. "Maybe that's not the best example."
"You think?" Amethyst said from her spot in the recliner.
"Anyhow, what I'm trying to say is that you have every right to be upset. What happened isn't anyone's fault, and that's okay." I nodded.
"Thank you so much Peridot." She wrapped her arms around me.
"Don't worry about it. I love you Pearl."
"I love you too, Peridot."
