~~~~~
It was an unusually bright and beautiful day out - the sun shone bright in an all blue sky, and the temperature was the perfect balance of cool and warm, which made for a very pleasant environment.
Peter had found that he had had a free day today, and had decided that he would surprise some of his favorite people with a visit, unable to turn down such a beautiful day. By the time Pete had arrived at the Stark household at nine-thirty in the morning, both of the Starks were already up and about, which was abnormal to Parker; he loved sleeping in, and found it hard to believe Pepper when she had told him that her and Morgan were wide awake at the crack of dawn.
With a yawn, Peter stepped out of the car and paced up to the front door, knocking several times before the door was opened. Only, because Pete hadn't fully woken up yet, he was rather confused when he didn't see anyone at the other end of the door, until he looked down to find that sweet smile and those chocolate eyes staring back up at him.
He barely had the time to react before the six-year-old was tackling Peter's legs, wrapping her arms snugly around his knees. "Peter!" she squealed happily. She was wearing the cutest yellow sundress, with an adorable necklace shaped the letter 'm' hanging around her neck.
"Hey lil' Peanut! How's my favorite girl?"
"Good!" she squeaked happily in response, pulling away from his legs to allow Peter to pick her up and spin her in circles. He kissed her on the cheek as she giggled as he spun them around.
"Morgan, who's there?" the girl's mother called as she appeared behind the door, a smile quickly falling upon her face at sight of the boy. "Peter! What a pleasant surprise!"
The young adult placed Morgan on the ground as he hugged the blonde tightly. "Good morning Mrs. Stark, good to see you."
"To what do we owe this special visit?" she asked with a grin as the three entered the house. Morgan darted to the living room, digging through one of her many toy bins.
Peter shrugged with a smile of his own. "Well, I figured since I wasn't busy, and Aunt May was out with Happy, I would stop by. Besides, it's such a beautiful day, I had to get out."
"That's wonderful kiddo, you're always welcome here. Besides, you make Morgan really happy when you come over. You're the closest thing that she has since, you know," she ended weakly with a sad smile, her eyes following Morgan as she dug through her toy chest.
Peter looked down to his feet, gulping with a small frown. Two years later, Mr. Stark's death was still a really hard thing to discuss. "Yeah, it's no problem," he smiled up at her.
Pepper returned the gesture, and just as she was about to speak again the two were interrupted by a certain someone crashing in between the two. Morgan pulled on Peter's jeans with one hand, and in the other she held what appeared to be a Spiderman figurine. "Peter, look! Look what Uncle Happy got me for my birthday!"
Peter laughed down at the girl, ruffling her hair. "That's awesome, Peanut!"
"Say, I have an idea," Pepper suddenly spoke, ruffling Morgan's hair as the little girl whined in protest. "How about we go on a picnic today? You know, just to get out of the house. None of us are busy, after all."
Peter shrugged, before Morgan was jumping up and down at their feet. "Yes yes yes!" she squealed. "Can we Peter? Can we?!"
The young adult smiled, copying Pepper's previous action as he ran his hand through Morgan's brown hair. "Sure, I don't see why not, it's beautiful out!"
"YAY!" she exclaimed, before dashing off up the stairs to get ready. Just as quickly as she disappeared, though, her little head popped out from around the corner of the stairs, as she called out to the pair. "I'll get the blanket and the basket!"
Peter turned to the mother with a smile. "I guess that leaves us with the food."
The blonde let out a small laugh before nodding in agreement. "Sounds good!"
~Time skip brought to you by Morgan and Peter arguing about which jelly to put on the sandwiches~
Pepper and Peter had both agreed that it would be best if the trio had their little picnic just right out back, seeing as the family had a large enough backyard as it was; and besides, this way they could stay out of the public eye, which was always better for Morgan.
Per Morgan's request, herself and Peter shared the same lunch - peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (because what else were you supposed to bring on a picnic!). Naturally, the two had spent almost ten minutes arguing about what jelly was better . . . strawberry or grape. Peter had vouched for strawberry, versus little Morgan who was currently obsessed with anything and everything purple (which felt strangely odd for Peter. He wasn't entirely sure why). Eventually, Peter gave in, because there was no point in arguing with a little kid; mostly because they knew they'd get their way eventually. Especially with the little Stark, who had - unfortunately for Peter - inherited her father's cleverness; she knew what cards to play and when to play them.
Currently, Morgan and Peter were tossing around one of those giant beach balls, Morgan erupting in a fit of giggles each time Peter pretended to fall backwards after catching it. Meanwhile, Pepper resided on the classical blue-and-white checkered blanket that had been placed under a giant oak tree for shade, as she observed the two with curious eyes.
"Ready Morgan?" Peter enthused as he tossed the beach ball into the air, startling an unprepared Morgan as it lightly bounced off her head and rolled away. She grabbed at her head where the ball had been only seconds ago, before twisting on her feet, giggling as she chased the ball down the hill.
While Parker waited, his hands on his knees, he spotted a patch of assorted flowers just across where Pepper was seated. He didn't know how he'd missed them beforehand - after all, they'd walked right past the colorful plants.
His interests peaked, he paced back over to Pepper, sidestepping the blanket and walking over to the bed of flowers. "Are these new?" he asked Pepper quizzically.
"Yes, actually," she responded, lifting her head to get a view of what he was looking at. "Morgan saw them at the grocery store and wanted to plant some of her own. So, we bought some seeds and planted them just over a month ago.. She actually did most of it herself."
"Wow."
"I know. Surprised me too."
"No, no, not that. I mean, that's amazing, but it's just . . . I just realized that I haven't been here in over a month," he frowned sadly.
Pepper sighed as she met his eyes. "It's not your fault, kiddo. You're busy being an Avenger, and taking college courses at home, and dealing with that magical wizard dude. It's stressful; believe me, I would know; I saw it on Tony's face almost every day . . . had the same expression you have." The mother shifted on the ground as she tossed away her eaten apple in the trash bag they had brought. "But sometimes there's things you have to sacrifice. It's part of living that life."
Peter's frown didn't leave his face. He didn't find it excusable that he hadn't been here in over a month. No matter how hectic life got, he had promised himself that he would always make time for Pepper and Morgan. They came first, no matter what.
In a way, though, the mom was right; Parker had been so unbelievably busy, between juggling school, the Avengers, working with Bruce on an electromagnetic interface for the new facility, and dealing with the whole Mysterio, "Spiderman's name is Peter Parker" situation - Peter had a lot on his plate. He had desperately needed a break, and spending time with these two, definitely counted as one. Which was why it frustrated him that he hadn't stopped by in so long. "I know, but I should be here more often. For both of you."
Just as Pepper opened her mouth to respond, Morgan came barreling at Peter, knocking into his legs with the beach ball, causing him to stumble backwards, nearly loosing his footing.
"Goodness, be careful Morgan," Pepper warned, but Peter was quick to shrug it off.
"It's fine," he laughed as Morgan repeatedly head-butted his knees.
"Throw it again!" she laughed against the beach ball, her voice slightly muffled.
Parker continued to laugh, and instead of agreeing to toss the ball again, a light bulb went off in his head as he glanced at the freshly placed flower bed - it had all sorts of flowers; dandelions, daisies, roses; you name it, it was there.
"Hey, I got a different idea," he spoke as Morgan pulled away from him. She waddled after him, the ball that was nearly twice her size cradled in her arms; it was so large that she could just barely see over the top of it.
"Here, put that down for a sec," he murmured. She cooperated, tossing the beach ball to the side as she came a step closer to Peter, who was now down on one knee in front of the flower bed.
"What?" she questioned curiously, peeking over his shoulder.
Pete pretended to concentrate, glancing several times at Morgan, then back to the flowers, then back to Morgan again. He scratched his chin with his index finger, pursing his lips as he glanced between the two. This caused the impatient child to laugh, crossing her arms.
"What? What is it!" she persisted.
Eventually, the older brunette decided to pick a lightly colored daisy from the patch, before he tilted Morgan's head towards him and tucked the stem underneath her thick locks of hair, that was slightly tousled from the small breeze. As he pulled away, he placed his hands on his hips and admired the absolutely adorable little girl in front of him.
"Why did you put that in my hair?" she asked, confusion on her face.
"Because, it looks very, very pretty on you."
"Weally?!" she asked, squishing her cheeks. Her eyes sparkled, as the biggest smile formed on her face.
"Yes! It looks amazing! Daisy's are so cute on you, Peanut."
The little girl jumped up and down, giggling as she ran to show her mom. "Mommy, Mommy! Look what Peter put in my hair!"
When Pepper caught sight of her daughter, her own smile widened across her face. "Oh my goodness, Morgan. You look so cute!"
"I know," she grinned, puffing her chest out with a sly grin.
Pepper chuckled heartily in response. "You get more and more like your father every day, you know that?"
"Wait!" she suddenly shouted, catching both Peter and Pepper's attention.
"What is it?" Peter asked.
"Wait!" she repeated, before she dashed back over to where Peter was now sitting, quickly snatching the first flower her hand came into contact with (which happened to be a rose), and not-so-gently stuffed it in Peter's hair.
"Ouch," he spoke softly as the girl struggled with the plant.
When she finally stepped back, she placed her hands on her hips, satisfied with her work. "There. Now it's perfect."
Peter and Pepper both laughed at the girl's adorable behavior. "Here, get together you two, picture time," Pepper instructed, taking out her phone to snap a photo.
Morgan rolled her eyes as Peter tugged her closer by the shoulder. "Mommmyyy! You always take pictures!"
"What? I can't help it that you two look so freakishly cute! Come on, smile for Mommy!"
When the little Stark refused, Peter gingerly poked her in the side, right in her tickle spot. "Haha, hey!" she giggled. Peter took the opportunity and smiled at the camera.
When Pepper brought down the phone, the two of them ran up to her to see how it turned out. "Oh, that's a keeper," Pepper whispered, most likely to herself.
Peter leaned over the blonde's shoulder, and smiled broadly as he eyed the picture; Morgan had the biggest smile on her face, caught mid-laughter. That was most definitely a keeper.
"What do you think?" Pepper asked the two of them. Morgan was quick to answer, though, as she attempted to flip her hair.
"I think I look fantastical!"
