Chapter 7 - Memories

Stardust padded wearily through a meadow, too tired to care how much her left paw hurt; it had been sprained a few days ago. Two days had past after their narrow escape from the scarred wolf's followers. Moonshadow was walking slowly ahead of her, he stopped to wait for Stardust to catch up. Dawnwing was looking around her, then she turned right and went north.

"Why are we going north?" Moonshadow hooted in confusion.

"We're getting away from here," Dawnwing replied, "The wolf knows that you live around here and he's hunting you down. If we leave the South and go towards the North, it will be harder for him to find you."

Moonshadow nodded slowly. "But there are other dangers in the North." He hooted.

"None are as dangerous as that wolf, I would rather be attacked by a whole patrol of Snowies than face that wolf." Dawnwing told him. "Besides, maybe they will be acting differently than the last time you met them."

"Maybe..." Moonshadow agreed reluctantly.

Dawnwing turned round to look at him, sympathy glowed in her yellow eyes. "Don't worry, Her death was not your fault, Her father won't blame you."

"Who are you talking about?" Stardust mewed.

"Someone Moonshadow loved." Dawnwing answered quietly. "She was also one of my best friends."

"Oh." Stardust meowed. Moonshadow was probably about to tell her two days ago but Dawnwing had saved them from being caught by the scarred wolf's followers. They had left the birch forest behind them and were now walking through a meadow. A small breeze ruffled Stardust's fur. She looked ahead and saw tall blue cones on the horizon; they had sharp edges and a white blanket covered their tips.

"What are those?" Stardust pointed with her long tail.

"Those are mountains in the distance, their tips are covered in snow." Dawnwing hooted.

"Snow? But snow only comes in winter, doesn't it?" Stardust mewed in surprise.

"It is always freezing cold up there," Dawnwing replied, "That's why the snow endlessly falls and the mountains are always white."

Suddenly, something sparked in Stardust's memory; she remembered herself as a kitten, trudging through a heavy snow storm, through a field covered over in a white blanket. A fox had appeared but a pale grey owl had stopped it in it's tracks, warning it not to come any closer. The owl looked a lot like Moonshadow and the fox looked just as sly as Robintail. A few other memories changed the scene; a silver grey kitten was standing high above on a snowy cliff, looking down on the world below. An icy wind blew past her and around the corner, appeared a silver tabby she-cat with sky blue eyes. She nudged the kitten away from the cliff edge and herded her towards a warm cosy cave.

"Stardust are you okay?" Moonshadow's hoot brought her back to the present.

Blinking her eyes, Stardust saw that she was getting left behind.

"Oh, I'm okay." She mewed. She trotted towards Moonshadow and walked beside him.

The sun had risen high in the sky. Dawnwing suggested they rest before climbing the mountains. "We'll rest till sunset and start climbing."

"Where should we rest?" Stardust meowed. "There's no shelter. What if it rains?"

"We don't have much choice if it rains." Dawnwing replied. "Let's take a nap here."

The three settled down on the soft green grass and Moonshadow kept watch. Stardust looked ahead and saw that the mountains looked much bigger and taller now. She curled up and drifted into sleep. In her dreams, she dreamed of the snowy mountains and kept seeing a silver tabby with blue eyes, this time she also saw a dark grey long furred tom with amber eyes with her.

"Stardust," they whispered softly. "Beware the enemy above the skies."
