Chapter Twenty-Nine
Day 7 - 3 AM
Noface released the catch on the trick door of the wooden crate, looked carefully around the empty cellar, and crept cautiously down the tunnel, pausing to listen frequently. When he got to the trap door he hung on the ladder for ten minutes, sensitive to every nuance of sounds above him. Finally satisfied, he eased the door open and slipped out onto the boathouse floor. Staying low, he very carefully worked his way to the far corner of the room, away from the dock. His fingers searched for the hidden latch and he let himself out.
It was, he estimated, about three in the morning. He assumed there was a guard on the dock and moved accordingly. Using the boathouse to shield him, he carefully moved twenty yards down the shoreline to a small creek. Moving the brush from a canoe he had hidden, he removed the bandages from his face, changed his clothes from a bag in the canoe and silently pushed off into the marsh.
