1-2

The next morning, back at her desk at the Drug Enforcement Administration office in downtown Chicago, Dema rang Captain O'Mally and asked him if he was ready for her to follow up on her report. She definitely wanted to go after this guy herself.

"Where do you come up with these 'tips' that no one else hears about?" he asked her.

Dema was glad he wasn't at her desk to see her blush. She couldn't say her "anonymous informant" was a ghost, so she'd invented a "street person" who told her she saw the guy leaving the building.

She'd done that before, and the question was O'Mally's way of reminding her that he was onto her, that if she got careless about it she could get them both in hot water.

"Just lucky, I guess," she told him.

"Dema, we both know that luck has nothing to do with it. But you're usually right, so yes, go ahead. See what more you can dig up."

"Oh, by the way," the captain continued as Dema was about to hang up, "Cern Stewart called. You remember him?"

Dema remembered him clearly. "Oh, yes, he worked that SAAN case. Represented them well, as I recall."

She also recalled that he was quite good looking, and had a very masculine presence about him.

"Well he'll be stopping by, possibly tomorrow. He's heard of your drug map, and wants to ask me something about it. That means I'll turn him over to you."

Dema felt a little flush of anticipation creep into her cheeks, and again was glad she was on the phone. "Thanks for the warning," she said. "I'll be ready for him." She hung up and turned her attention back to the ghost case.

Dema called Tom Finn at the police precinct. He was the local detective on the case. She offered to team up with him to go pay a visit to her "suspect." Finn was ready.

The dead girl's name was Carolyn Jones. The killer's name was David Hanley. Hanley worked as a broker for a big investment company. Carolyn had been an executive assistant at the same firm. So at the office Dema and Tom would play it like a routine investigation; they would be there to learn what they could about Carolyn's history from people who knew her. Dema didn't tell Tom that Carolyn might be tagging along.
