Chapter 4

Chapter 4

“Hey!” I grinned, opening up the door.

“Hey.” Dylan said happily.

“You can just throw your bag in the back.” Dylan said. I nodded, looking at his battered pick up truck.

“Nice car.” I joked.

“Oi, I bought it myself.” He said, pretending to be hurt. I laughed and tossed my bag in the back with his.

“So. Where are we going?” I asked as we got in car.

Dylan just looked at me.

“You don’t know?” I laughed.

“I don’t know anywhere here...” He grumbled.

“Alright I’ll show you the way. Theres a really nice coney island just a few blocks away.” I said. Dylan grinned.

“Awesome.”

When we got to the restaurant, we got a booth pretty quickly.

“What are you getting?” Dylan asked as he looked at the menu.

“2 hot dogs with a side of fries and a mini greek salad.” I said, reciting what I always get.

“That sounds delicious.” Dylan laughed.

“Are you going to get it too?”

“Yep.” He grinned, popping the ‘p’. I smiled at him.

“So. How were the VMAs last night?” He asked.

I shrugged. “Alright, I guess... It’s not really my scene. I hate getting all dressed up like that, you know?” I said.

Dylan nodded. “So how come no one knows that you’re a girl?” He asked.

I frowned, wondering how to answer this. “Well my parents are really well known, and they have 3 perfect kids... Then there’s me. I used to scream when I was put in a dress, and I would bring bugs inside and want all the sports toys. And then football started. When I hit my freshman year, I was really really into it. And I tried out for football, and made the team. But the principle said no way. They wouldn’t let a girl on their team, because they wanted to protect their image. My parents said no way. They didn’t want their daughter playing on a boys team. They wanted me to be a model or something like that. So we made an agreement. I wouldn’t talk to anyone outside of the small select group of people who would know, and I’d keep my helmet on at all times. I’d maintain an A average, and I’d go to every social even my parents wanted me to.” I said, taking a sip of my water.

“That’s complicated.” Dylan laughed.

“Yea, sorry.” I laughed. “I kind of rambled on there.”

“It’s alright.”

“Anyways, let’s play 20 questions.”

“You go first.” He said.

“U of M or MSU.” I said. “Most important question.”

“U of M all the way.” Dylan laughed.

“Oh thank god.” I said.

“You?”

“U of M.” I grinned. “Do you have a girlfriend?”

“Nope. Boyfriend?”

“Nope. Favorite movie?”

“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Favorite song?”

“Royals by Lorde. Favorite flavor ice cram?”

“Chocolate. Favorite juice?”

“Orange mango.” I said. Our waitress came to take our order, so we had to pause our game.

We both ordered, and then she walked off with a smile.

“That’s Jackie. I love her, she just had a baby a few months ago.” I said.

Dylan just nodded. Instead of playing the game again, we just talked.

“Is it confusing to live in such a big house?” Dylan asked.

I shrugged.

“I really only spend my time in my room and the kitchen, which are connected by just a stair case. But sometimes in the summer I venture upstairs to the weight room.” I laughed, stacking the little boxes of jam on the table. “I like to keep to myself, away from my family.”

Dylan nodded. “I know what you mean.” Dylan said.

“How many siblings do you have?” I asked.

“7.” He said.

My eyes widened.

“All boys.”

“Holy shit.” I said.

He just laughed. “Yea.”

“Tell me about them.” I grinned.

“Well there’s Adam, he’s 24, and he lives in England with his fiancé. There’s Brian, he’s 19, and he’s at college at Michigan.”

“Go blue.” I laughed.

“Then there’s me. Dylan.” He laughed, pointing at himself. “Then there’s Colton, he’s 15, they’re freshman, and so is Ethan, he’s 15 also. They’re twins. And then there’s Freddie, he’s 12, and kind of keeps to himself. There’s Jacob, he’s 8. And then Noah is 7, he’s the baby.”

I just nodded. “Wow. And I thought my family was crazy.” I laughed. I told him all about my family, and then our food came.

We had a fun conversation over the meal, and ended up talking so much, that it was 2:30 by the time we realized we’d missed the movie.

“Oh I’m sorry...” Dylan frowned.

“Don’t be.” I laughed. “I had lots of fun with you today.”

Dylan smiled. “I had fun with you too. You’re not like other girls.”

I narrowed my eyes at him in a playful way. “Is that a good thing or a bad thing?” I joked.

“A very good thing. I like you. You’re nice.” He said.

I smiled.

“Thanks.” I grinned, taking another sip of my water.

“Well then. Ready to go to practice?” He asked, standing up. I groaned.

“Yea.” I sighed, following him to the register. “Here, I’ll pay.”

“No. I will.” Dylan said.

“Let me pay or you’re running extra.” I said.

“I don’t care. It’s worth it.”

“Dylan.”

“What kind of guy would I be if I let you pay for the first date?” He asked, raising his eyebrows.

I bit my lip. “This was a date?” I grinned.

“If you want it to be.”

I just nodded. “Yea.” I laughed.

Dylan smiled, and paid the bill.

“I had fun.” He said as we walked out to his truck.

“Same.” I laughed, getting into the passenger seat.

The drive to school was filled with the sound of light conversation.

Dylan went in the regular door, and I went around to the back.

“Hello!” I said happily, putting my bag down on my bench. I peered around the corner and grinned at the other guys.

“Why so happy?” Ryan laughed.

I shrugged. “Can’t a girl be happy?” I laughed.

“Mood swings!” Nate called.

“Fuck off.” I said, frowning.

“Told you so.”

I rolled my eyes and quickly changed into my practice stuff.

“And baby, it’s amazing I’m in this maze with you, I just can’t crack your code. One day you’re screaming you love me loud the next day you’re so-”

“SHUT UP!” Luke said loudly, hitting the back of my head.

I just sighed and walked over to Dylan, who was lacing up his shoes.

“Hey.” I smiled.

“Hey.” He grinned. I pulled my helmet on as we headed out to the field.

“Captain you run practice today.” Coach said. Everyone groaned, expecting a really hard one.

“Matt, you and I are team captains. Pick teams. We’re scrimmaging.” I grinned, standing in front of my team.

“Sweet.” Matt said, standing next to me.

“I pick first. Dylan.” I said. Dylan grinned and walked over to me.

“Hey!” Luke pouted. He was always my first choice.

“Luke.” Matt said.

“Nate.” I said.

“Jack.”

“Ryan.”

The teams were picked, and we started the scrimmage.

My team slaughtered the other team, of course.

“Oi. Why didn’t you pick me?” Luke said, getting right up next to me as we stopped for water.

“Because I didn’t feel like it.” I shrugged. “Luke, I pick you 99 percent of the time, deal with the other 1 percent.”

Luke rolled his eyes. I squirted some water into my mouth and shook out my ankles.

“What’s wrong?” Coach asked quickly. “Is it your knee?”

“No my feet hurt from being in heels for 6 hours last night.” I grumbled.

“Jesus christ I never thought I’d hear that excuse.” He laughed, shaking his head. I laughed.

“But yea, my knee does hurt a bit.” I said truthfully. Coach frowned.

“How long has it been hurting?”

I shrugged. “I dunno it’s been getting achy for a while but it’s just hurting bad these past few days.” I said, hating myself for admitting to pain. When I dislocated it the first time, I insisted that I go back out and play, and that it didn’t hurt. I’ve dislocated my knee 6 times in my life, within the past 4 years. I played on a broken foot for 3 months before I could barely put weight on it anymore. I just don’t admit to pain, it makes me feel weak.

“Alright, just sit out for the rest of practice.” He said.

“But I’m the quarterback.” I frowned.

“Joe.” Coach said. One of the second string players jumped up. Matt was the second string quarterback, but Joe was pretty good too.

I huffed and sat down.

Coach blew his whistle and everyone put down their waters.

“Sam why aren’t you getting up?” Nate asked with concern.

“My knee.” I grumbled as coach handed me an ice pack.

The guys just rolled their eyes and went back to the field.

“Can I please play?” I begged coach.

“Not if it hurts.”

“I’m fine!” I said, jumping up.

“No you’re not. Sit down.” Coach said harshly. I frowned and sat down.

At the end of practice, I bitterly went back to the locker room, ignoring all of the other guys.

“Do you need a ride home?” Dylan asked, walking up to me as I pulled on my sweatpants over my spandex.

“No.” I said harshly.

“But you didn’t drive.”

“I’ll walk.”

“Really?”

“Can I have a ride.” I sighed, looking up at him.

“Of course.” He grinned. I felt a smile growing on my lips.

“You have a nice smile.” I said quietly, unable to take my eyes off of him.

“Thanks.” Dylan replied. I felt my cheeks turn pink and I pulled my bag over my shoulder.

“Ready?” I asked. He nodded.

“I’ll see you tomorrow!” I called to the other guys.

“Skype me tonight I need the science notes! We’ve got the test tomorrow!” Luke yelled as I approached the back door.

“Do ‘em yourself!” I laughed.

I met Dylan out by his car.

So the funniest thing happened last night/this morning. I usually wake up automatically at like 4 or 5, idk why, but it just happens, and I usually roll over, check my phone, and go back to sleep. But today I had a text from my cousin's ex girlfriend, they're like 3 years older, and broke up a while ago -they were so cute :(- but it's basically her telling me that her grad party is tomorrow and that she fogrot to invite me it was hilarious that she'd suddenly remembered at like 2 in the morning and she's like 'i know this is totally in the middle of the night but I just realized I forgot to ask you' and I was like aw

Update: Later today (Yea, exciting, I know)

(Btw, the chapters get much MUCH longer as the story goes on so I know they're pretty disappointing)
