Chapter 32
Chapter 32
“Ma! Ma I can’t!” Dylan was yelling as I walked into the kitchen.
“What’s going on here?” I asked Noah, sitting down at the kitchen table next to him.
“Dylan, I have work, and so does your father, the twins are at a friend’s house, I need you to watch the boys.” Kate said, sounding extremely defeated and tired.
“I have a game! I can’t just take the boys to-”
“I can watch them. I’ll be on the sidelines the whole time anyways.” I spoke up, giving Dylan a look.
“Sam, it’s States, it’s going to get pretty loud and intense on the sidelines.” Dylan said, giving me a look.
“Well then I guess Noah and Jake will have to be well behaved then.” I said, raising my eyebrows at him.
“Fine but they’re your responsibility.” Dylan grumbled.
“I trust Sam with them more than you anyways.” Kate said, winking at me.
“We’re going to the football game?!” Jake asked excitedly, running into the room.
“Yes, both of you go put your shoes on and grab a jacket, it’s going to be chilly tonight.” Kate said to her youngest children as she took her keys off of the hook.
“Is Freddie coming?” I asked softly.
“Nah he’s old enough to stay home alone I just don’t trust him to watch the little ones.” Kate said.
“I’m not little I’m nine!” Jake called from the back hall.
“And I’m 8!” Noah yelled as well.
I laughed as they ran back into the kitchen, both wearing their matching running shoes. Noah had a jacket on, but Jake was still just in his t-shirt.
“Jake, put on a sweatshirt.” Dylan frowned, giving his little brother a look.
“Okay I’m out, Sam, I can’t thank you enough for this.” Kate smiled, walking towards the back door. “Noah, Jake, love you!”
“Love you too mommy!” Noah called while Jake reluctantly pulled on a grey zip up sweatshirt.
The door shut behind Kate and the young boys came running up to me.
“Boys let’s go, we’re taking Sam’s car.” Dylan said, pulling his football bag over his shoulder. “You guys are sitting on the sideline with Sam, no funny business, got it?”
Noah stuck his tongue out at Dylan as him and Jake ran out to my car.
I laughed, grabbing my keys from the kitchen table.
“We’re like a little family.” I told Dylan, placing a soft kiss on his lips.
“We’ll be a little family someday.” Dylan whispered, rubbing my back as we walked out of the front door. “We’ll have our own little house, and our cute little front lawn, and cute little babies, and our cute little adorable family.”
I raised my eyebrows at him, shutting the door behind us.
“You’re making a lot of assumptions here.” I teased, bumping his hip with mine.
Dylan just winked, tossing his football bag into the backseat of my car in between Noah and Jake.
I laughed, shaking my head as I got into the drivers seat. “You’re insane.” I told him, starting the engine.
“You two, behave yourselves tonight because it’s States, and this is a huge deal alright? If we win this, we’re going to regional championships, and if we win those, it’s nationals. And you want us to have another national title, right?” Dylan said, turning around to face his brothers.
They both nodded politely.
“And it would really be awful if you two messed something up tonight. You guys know Coach, right?” Dylan asked.
They nodded again.
“Well you better respect him, and listen to him, and listen to everybody else dressed like him, okay? If one of them tells you to be quiet, you better shut your mouths and sit still. Sam’s in charge tonight, got it?” Dylan said firmly.
They nodded, being quiet and respectful.
“Enough seriousness.” I laughed. “Who’s ready to kick Pioneer’s ass?!”
All three boys in the car started cheering, causing me to laugh as I pulled into the parking lot of the school.
“The three of you better not get me into any trouble tonight.” I warned as we walked in through the front doors of the school. “Please...”
Noah and Jake walked on either side of me while Dylan went ahead.
“What the hell are children doing in my locker room?!” Parker yelled.
Noah grabbed my arm, while Jake took a step behind me.
“They’re my brothers, my parents are working tonight and they can’t stay home alone and-”
“And you expect my bench to become a daycare for whoever wanders by?” Parker said, crossing his arms.
“I’ll watch them, honestly. They’re really good kids, they won’t cause problems at all.” I assured him, smoothing down Noah’s hair.
“Anything goes wrong, it’s on you.” Parker told me before turning back to his conversation with Coach.
“Sammy why are you in the boys locker room?” Noah whispered to me as a shirtless guy walked past us.
“Because I don’t like the girls locker room.” I replied with a laugh. “Come on, let’s go over to Nate and your brother.” I said, putting my hands on their backs as we walked to Nate.
Noah and Jake were absolutely thrilled to take part in our usual pre-game ritual. Noah kept looking at me with such shock and excitement during the warm up, while Jake was following Dylan around like a little puppy about to be fed.
“What happens now?” Noah asked, looking up at me and Dylan as we started heading out to the field.
“Get over here.” Nate said, pulling Noah up on his shoulders. The little boy let out the cutest laugh I’d heard in a while.
“What the hell.” Dylan muttered, lifting Jake up on his own shoulders.
“Don’t hurt yourself!” I laughed, jogging alone next to them as we ran out to the field in the front of the team. Captains always run first.
It still felt weird when I ran out in jeans and no pads. My hair was back in a french braid, but it still felt bare without my helmet.

“Dylan I have to take them home.” I said urgently as we stood outside of the school with the rest of the team. They were all planning the victory party, as we’d completely wiped the turf with the opposing team.
“Nah come on come party with us!” Dylan said, walking towards me.
I gave him a look, adjusting Noah on my hip.
“Your eight year old brother is asleep, literally in my arms, and your nine year old brother looks like he’s about ready to pass out any second. It is ten thirty in the evening and we have to children with us. I’m taking them home and putting them to bed.” I said firmly.
Dylan raised his eyebrows at me. “But you’re my ride.”
“Yea well then find someone who won’t be drinking and ask them to give you a ride home or get in the car with me now because I can’t hold him for much longer and Jake’s about to fall asleep.” I said, stumbling backwards as Jake let most of his body weight rest on my legs. “Dylan.” I hissed.
“Alright alright.” Dylan sighed, picking up Jake. “I told you this was a bad idea.”
“No it was actually a good idea.” I snapped. “Because otherwise either your mom wouldn’t have gone to work, or one of us would have missed this game.”
“Oi Peters, Carson, you coming?” Someone called.
Dylan gave me a pleading look, but I shook my head.
“Nah not tonight.” Dylan called over his shoulder, taking Noah from my arms as well. “Dammit they’re getting big.”
“Aw, babysitting duty.” Nate teased.
“Fuck off, Nathan.” I hissed, pulling my keys out of my pocket.
“Babe, babe can you get my bag?” Dylan asked as he carried one of his brothers in each arm.
“Yea, yea of course.” I nodded, pulling his bag over my shoulder.
He buckled up his sleeping siblings in the backseat of my car while I turned on the engine.
“Hang on hang on.” Dylan said, pulling his ringing phone out of his pocket.
“Hello?” He answered, holding up his hand to me.
“You’re kidding me right? You know I had a game tonight, and I’ve got the boys with me, and Sam-”
Dylan sighed, running his hand over his hair. “Yes of course shut up and wait for us.”
Dylan hung up and turned to me with a sigh. “We’ve got to pick up the twins.”
“You’re kidding.” I said, shaking my head.
“I’m sorry Sam, I can’t just leave them, and-”
“Fine! Fine!” I exclaimed, pulling out of the parking spot.
“Don’t be mad...” Dylan sighed.
“Just shut up.” I shook my head. “Where are they?”
“Julie’s.”
“That doesn’t help at all.” I hissed.
Dylan sighed and gave me the address.
“Be quiet your brothers are sleeping.” Dylan said as the twins got into the car.
They hushed quickly, giving Dylan quiet congratulations for winning the game.
When we got back to their house, Dylan told them to go right upstairs and be quiet while we put Jake and Noah to bed.
The younger boys were fast asleep by the time we tucked them in to bed.
“Congrats.” Jake mumbled as I turned off the lights. A soft smile crossed my face as I saw Dylan give each of them a kiss on the forehead.
I looked into Dylan’s room to find Ethan passed out on his stomach across his bed, with Colton on his laptop most likely watching Netflix.
“You guys good in here?” I asked Colton.
He nodded.
I smiled. “Alright, goodnight guys.” I said softly.
“Hey Sam?” Colton whispered.
“Yea?” I replied, leaning against the doorframe.
“Thanks. For um, for always being here for us. Thanks for taking care of the boys tonight, and thanks for picking us up.” Colton said softly.
“It’s nothing. You guys are like family to me and you know that.” I smiled. “Now go to sleep, it’s late.”
“Sam?”
“Yea?” I laughed.
“It’s not even 11 o clock, you wimp.” Colton teased.
“Shush.” I laughed, turning off the lights. I shut the door behind me, my heart warming as I saw Dylan carrying Freddie up the stairs.
“He was asleep watching TV.” Dylan whispered to me, walking towards the little boys’ room.
I leaned against the opposite wall while Dylan put Freddie to bed.
20 minutes later found us both laying on our backs on my bed, close to falling asleep.
“We did good.” Dylan whispered.
I just groaned, rolling over to rest my head on his shoulder.
“Were you serious about what you said earlier?” I asked quietly. “About us having a family someday?”
Dylan looked down at me.
“Samantha Carson, I cannot imagine the rest of my life without you.” Dylan said quietly. “And seeing you with Noah and Jake tonight, you’re going to be a kick ass mom.”
I laughed, closing my eyes.
“Can we just go to sleep...” Dylan whispered, holding me close to him.
“Can we never wake up...” I giggled, moving my leg so that it was wrapped around his legs.
“I think we should sleep for about 9 months until school is out and we’re done with high school.” Dylan said quietly. I just mumbled, snuggling my head closer into his shoulder.
“I think we should sleep until we’re not tired anymore...” I whispered.
“I think we should married.” Dylan whispered, rubbing his hand up and down my back.
“I think that sounds like an excellent idea.” I sighed, a soft smile growing on my face.
