Chapter 14

Chapter 14

“Dad!” I said harshly. “I understand that you don’t want me to go, but I’m going. We’re already on the road anyways.”

Truthfully, we’d literally just pulled out of Dylan’s driveway.

“Samantha. You can’t just go running off whenever you-”

“Name one other time when I’ve left without telling you.” I said, cutting him off.

My dad just sighed.

“Exactly. Daddy, I’ll be back by your dinner on Sunday, and I’ll act like I live there, and we’re one big happy family.” I sighed, looking out of the window.

“No funny business. No drinking. No drugs. No sex.” My dad said harshly.

“Yea whatever bye.” I said, then hung up. Dylan looked over at me.

“Everything alright?” He asked.

“Uh, yea! I’m about to spend 5 hours in the car with you. Of course everything’s alright.” I giggled.

Dylan grinned.

“Turn the radio on.” He grinned.

“No I wanna talk.” I said.

“About...?”

“Next year.” I said, looking down at my hands.

“What about it?” Dylan asked.

“In 4 weeks, we’ll know for sure, but it’s looking good, and I’ll most likely be moving to Washington D.C. in January.” I said softly, studying his face.

Dylan’s face was set, and he just looked straight ahead.

“We’ll talk about that when we need to.” Dylan said softly. “If you think we’re breaking up just because you’re moving across the country then you’re wrong. It’s an 8 hour and 21 minutes drive from here to D.C. and even if you were moving to Australia, that wouldn’t keep me away.”

“I love you.” I said, reaching over to grab his hand. He smiled and squeezed my hand, resting it on his leg.

“I love you too.” He said.

“So, let’s play a game.” I giggled.

“Uh?” Dylan asked, quickly glancing at me, then back on the road.

“You know the A my name is Alice game?”

“Oh yea I love that game! I’ll start.” Dylan grinned. “A my name is Adam and my wife’s name is Annie, and we come from America, with a car full of ants.”

“B my name is Betty and my husbands name is Burt, we come from Boston, with a car full of bikes.”

“C my name is Charlie and my wife’s name is Carey, we come from Connecticut with a car full of condoms.”

I giggled. “D my name is Dana, and my husbands name is Dylan. We come from Delaware, with a car full of darts.”

Dylan laughed, giving my hand a squeeze.

We went on until Dylan came across the letter S.

“S my name is Sylan, and my wife’s name is-”

“That’s not a name.” I giggled.

“Shut up yes it is.” Dylan laughed. “S my name is Sylan, and my wife’s name is Samantha, we come from Southern Italy with a car full of Swedish fish.”

I smiled and gave him a soft look.

“You’re perfect, you know that?” I whispered.

“I know.” He winked.

When we finished the game, I felt like an eternity had gone by.

“How long have we been in the car?” I asked, looking at the clock. “10 minutes?!” I gasped.

Dylan just laughed.

“Babe it’s a long drive up north.” Dylan laughed, his eyes focusing on the road. We weren’t even on the high way yet. I pouted.

“Wait have you never gone on a road trip?” Dylan asked, glancing over at me quickly again.

“I’ve been up north.” I replied. “I’ve been to lots of places.”

“No, I mean, have you ever spend endless hours in a hot stuffy car, cramped up, getting fast food, and singing loudly to the radio?” He asked.

“We always fly, or take a limo.” I muttered.

“Oh my Gosh. Well you’re in for a treat.” Dylan smiled. I just laughed and pulled my knees up to me.

I reached over and turned on the radio. We were in Dylan’s truck. We were going to take my car, but we figured the truck would be more fun, plus the air conditioning in my car was broken....

“Ooh I love this song.” I smiled, turning up Applause.

Dylan just laughed.

“I know. All you do is play it over and over.” Dylan laughed.

I rolled my eyes and looked out of the window.

“So how much longer?” I asked.

“Babe. I love you. But if you keep asking that I swear to God I’ll-”

“Love me even more!” I giggled. Dylan just rolled his eyes, a smirk on his face.

I just laughed and pulled my phone out. I gasped.

“It’s homecoming on Saturday!” I exclaimed.

“Yea I know. I asked Nate and he said you don’t usually go...” Dylan frowned.

“Because I always have shit to do with my dad...” I groaned. It was currently Saturday, and homecoming was in a week. We were supposed to be driving back to Birmingham on Sunday. “I hate it, don’t get me wrong, but I figured that you’d want to go.”

“Oh I’m sorry...” Dylan frowned.

“And the game is on Friday... That’s my favorite game to play in...” I sighed.

“We can drive back Friday morning if you want.” Dylan suggested. “I’ll probably get sick of Brian by tomorrow anyways.” Dylan laughed.

I smiled.

“Really? You’d do that?” I asked, smiling at him.

“Of course. I’d do anything for you, you should know that by now.” Dylan said, reaching over to grab my hand again. I smiled. “Isn’t homecoming really late this year?” He asked.

“Yep.” I replied. It was currently the middle of October. We’d started football games in the middle of August, and for some reason, it takes 2 months for homecoming to come around. “Really late.” I nodded, playing with Dylan’s fingers.

“We should go on a road trip. Like next summer, just drive across the country.” Dylan said, adjusting himself in his seat so that he was leaning back a bit more.

“That would be so much fun.” I grinned.

Dylan just nodded, looking forwards on the road as we pulled onto the high way. I smiled and rested my head against the seat.

******************************

“I have to pee sooooooo bad.” I exclaimed as we got out of the car.

Dylan raised his eyebrows at me.

“Shut up I had 3 of those water bottles.” I said, taking his hand and walking faster into the restaurant. Dylan laughed.

“I told you not to drink so much.” He teased, squeezing my hand.

“Oh just shut up and get a table I’ll be right back.” I said, walking over to the bathroom.

3 minutes later, I was sitting across from him at a table.

“What are you getting?” He asked.

“I’m not hungry.” I shrugged.

“Then why are we here?” Dylan laughed, putting down his glass of water.

“I had to pee and I thought you were hungry.” I laughed.

“No God no we’ve only been on the road for 45 minutes and ma’s breakfast was huge.” Dylan said. “Shall we go?”

“Yea.” I replied, standing up. We got disapproving looks from the waitresses, so I grabbed his hand and pulled him out.

We got to the car, laughing like mad. It took a good 5 minutes before Dylan was able to stop laughing and start driving. After a few minutes on the road, my phone started ringing.

Dylan turned off the radio while I answered it.

“Hello?” I said, crossing my legs on the seat and looking down at my knees.

“Hey! Where the hell are you?” Nate asked.

“What?” I laughed.

“Uh... Practice?” Nate said, sounding annoyed.

“Oh yea I’m not going to be at practice this week. Sorry.” I said. “I already told coach this. I’m up north.”

“What are you talking about it’s homecoming this week!” Nate exclaimed.

“Yes. I know that. We’re driving back on Friday.”

“You need to be at practice!”

“Unless the team comes to Petoskey, I’m not going to be at any practices.” I laughed. “Look, I have to go, I’m in the car with other people and-”

“No you’re not leaving have you seen Dylan?” Nate asked.

“He’s right next to me.” I laughed, grinning at my boyfriend.

“What?”

“We’re going to visit his brother.” I smiled.

“What’s the deal with you two? You’ve been spending so much time together and-”

“And what? I’ve met most of his brothers, and his older one invited him up north for the week, so we got all of our homework from school and we’re going on a little vacation. It feels nice not to be around my family, and just to be free of everything.” I said softly. “I don’t need a reason for every friend that I have.”

“What does your boyfriend think?” Nate asked. I laughed and put him on speaker, giving Dylan a look to tell him to be quiet.

“My boyfriend doesn’t care.” I replied.

“Likely story. I’d hate it if Hannah went on a road trip with one of the guys from the team and-”

“Well first of all, my relationship is none of your business, and second of all I’m not Hannah.” I said.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing she’s just-”

“She’s just what? So what if she’s been with a lot of guys before me.”

“Alright alright. Look, I’m going to go, I’m tired, and I want to sleep.” I said, hanging up.

I sighed.

“Go to sleep.” Dylan said, when I yawned.

“But I don’t want you to be alone...”

“I’m fine.” Dylan smiled.

I just nodded and closed my eyes, resting my head against the window.

******************************

“Babe, come on, we’re here.” Dylan said softly, shaking me awake.

“Huh?” I mumbled, opening my eyes and sleepily looking around.

“We’re here.” Dylan smiled. I just nodded and got out of the truck.

“Wow.” I said, looking at the house on the water.

“Mommy there here!” A familiar voice exclaimed, and a little boy ran out to see me.

“Noah! What are you doing here?” I laughed.

“Surprise!” Kate said, walking out onto the front porch of the nice house.

“This is our summer home. And we figured we might as well visit it one last time before winter.” Dylan grinned.

“Dylan!” A girl exclaimed, running out onto the porch. Dylan’s face broke into a huge smile.

“Josie!” Dylan exclaimed, dropping the bag and running over to the girl as she flew down the steps.

“I missed you!” She said, jumping into his arms. I frowned, a pang of jealousy shooting through me.

“Hey. Keep your paws of my girl.” An older boy said, walking out and standing next to Kate.

“Oh shut up Adam.” Dylan said, setting Josie down.

“I think your friend there doesn’t like Josie that much.” Adam laughed. “She’s sending her daggers.”

I felt my cheeks turn pink.

“Don’t be jealous! That’s Josie! He’s Adam’s fancy.” Noah grinned.

“Oh! Oh my God I’m sorry!” I exclaimed. “Noah don’t you mean fiancé?” I laughed.

Noah frowned. “I couldn’t remember the word.” He pouted.

“Oh it’s alright.”

“So you’re the famous ‘Sam’.” Adam grinned, walking down to the steps to stand next to Josie.

“Hey it’s Sam!” Colton exclaimed, vaulting over the railing and walking over to Dylan.

Dylan just smiled and put his arm around my waist.

“That’s my brother Adam, and Josie.” Dylan said.

“What’s all the noise?” Someone mumbled, walking out to the porch.

“And that’s Brian.” Dylan said.

“Oh I met him on the phone.” I said. “You guys all look so alike.”

“Come on. I’ll show you to my room.” Dylan smiled.

“Oh no. Sam stays in the guest room.” Kate said, shaking her head.

“Ma! She sleeps in my room at home!” Dylan exclaimed.

“Yea well now you won’t have 2 boys in the same room to pay off.” Kate said, raising her eyebrows.

“Mom!” Dylan exclaimed. “Come on... Josie stays with Adam!”

Kate narrowed her eyes.

“No funny business or I will personally come in there and make one of you leave.” Kate said. Dylan nodded.

“You think I’d do that without a lock on the door? Come on mom.” Dylan laughed. I just rolled my eyes and grabbed my bag.

“Why’d you bring your football bag?” Noah asked as I pulled it over my shoulder.

“Because your brother and I need to practice.” I replied, picking up my other bags.

“Damn.” Dylan said, poking my arms. “Muscles.”

I rolled my eyes and waited for him to grab his stuff.

“Follow me, m’lady.” He said.

I giggled and followed him to the big steps.

“Oh here, let me help.” Adam said when we walked past him and Josie.

“Oh no it’s fine.” I smiled, easily running up the steps after Dylan. “Thanks though.” I called over my shoulder.

I followed Dylan through the halls. It was a really really nice house.

“We all have our own room, almost. My parents have one, Adam, Brian, and I all have our own. The twins share one. Freddie has his own, and Jake and Noah share.” Dylan said, pushing open the door to a room. I gasped, dropping my bags and running over to the balcony. It was overlooking the lake and beach. It was beautiful.

“Like it?” Dylan asked, appearing behind me. I laughed at the sight of his brothers all in the water. Josie was laying on a towel on the beach, next to Kate, who was sitting in a chair.

“This is so cool.” I said, reaching my hands up behind me to play with his hair. Dylan sighed and wrapped his arms around me more.

I could so get used to this.
