Chapter 5

                                                                                      (Scorch's POV)

I think about 2 or 3 dragons flew at me, but I didn't know who they were or what they looked like. Sharp claws stabbed into my shoulder, and it felt like they were pouring lava into my insides. I hissed in pain, and thrashed around wildly, but that only made the pain worse. The lethal claws dug in deeper into my shoulder, and made a good cut. I could tell lots of blood was pouring from my wound, I was starting to feel light-headed.

"If you move, the pain increases." The Seawing reminded me, I could tell he was smirking.

When did this dragon get so evil? I wondered.

"One of my brother's latest inventions. I would ask you to tell your friends about it, but I'm afraid you won't be alive to do that." I tried to lash out at the dragons all around me. I heard someone's claws rake against the wooden floor, and the sound they made was unpleasant. The room was starting to smell of burning flesh.

I roared in anger and irritation. I couldn't believe Snowy wasn't making a sound. Or maybe my roars and angry vows in my head were overpowering some sounds outside of my mind.

"Something else is coming.." The SeaWing said to himself. Suddenly all pain in my shoulder went away, but once the claws were gone, the pain was replaced with stinging. I winced, and slowly sat up, making sure that my shoulder wasn't torn off or anything. Those dragons hurt.

"I'm not sure that was a SeaWing." Snowy said finally. "That couldn't be a SeaWing."

I thought about what she said, and she was right. Last time I checked, SeaWings weren't associated with fire at all.

"I'm with you on that," I said, using all my bits of strength to stand up now. I winced in the process again, one of my eyes squinting at the pain. "But we have to get out of here."

________(SnowyStar's POV)

The sun was almost gone from when we came into that "SeaWing's" hut. It got a a little colder, and the tide went higher up on the beach. It was a beautiful sight, but a horrible experience. The dragons didn't get me as bad as they got Scorch, but I was still clawed up. They got my left hind leg, but it wasn't so visible. I could just hide it with my wing, but it would look awkward.

Scorch and I limped down the beach the hut was on. He brought out the goods we got from that crazy SeaWing, and we were extra cautious about our surroundings, looking out for each other. When I was scouting the island, I noticed that it was bigger than I thought it was. A little jungle was behind the hut, and tall trees were everywhere.

They swayed when the gentle breeze came, and it felt like the wind was soothing my aching bones. I let myself be settled by the wind for a moment. I started to check if we had everything.

"Oh, hey Scorch," I realized after rummaging through the pile. "We forgot the berries."

He checked with me. "Yea, looks like we did."

"I can get them." I offered. He looked up at the sky, seeing the sun was going down some more.

"Okay, but be careful in there."

I nodded and walked towards the hut. My limp wasn't so bad after I stretched my hind leg a bit. When I entered, I noticed that the place smelled of burned flesh and scales. I covered my mouth, trying not to gag.

I saw the berries in the secluded area, and carefully picked them up. I carried them in my right talon, and I counted the berries, seeing there were 20.

I made my way out of the lichen, and out of the foul smelling hut. I stepped outside and enjoyed the warm sun on my sore scales for a moment, and took another step. I started heading towards Scorch, but a blur of grey and yellow rammed into my bruised side.

The object pinned me down with their talons, but it seemed skillful. I felt like this dragon was a trained assassin.

"Storm!" The grey dragon said. "I caught the murderer!"

Murderer? I thought. I was almost the victim of murder, more like it.

  "Wha-?" I was cut off.

"So you did, Funnel," The dragon, I believe, named Storm said. She had a nice shade of blue scales on her, and yellow eyes. Her underbelly was yellow, like my attacker's I thought. "But I thought we agreed to not attack the murderer."

"Do you hear yourself...?" Funnel asked. His talons suddenly got a tighter grip, but stopped not too long after. "Not attack the murderer? I thought you were the first one to choose to attack."

"Right, but we both agreed not to attack in the end, remember?" She said.

"But it's a killer."

"We don't even know if it's the killer."

"It could be, and I call killing this dragon right now."

"So you would risk killing an innocen-"

"STOP ARGUING." I hissed impatiently. "Just so you know, I think this 'murderer' you're looking for left."

The two dragons looked at each other and shrugged. It looked like they weren't sure whether to trust me or not. I guessed that they chose to trust me, since Funnel let me go. I stood up and was about to make a run for it, but Storm stopped me.

"Wait, if you're not the murderer, what does the real one look like?" She asked me with a serious tone. "I have to know."

I didn't understand why exactly she had to know, but the logical side of my brain reasoned that they were most likely guards of a palace, trying to find a killer loose in their city. After all, the SeaWing had some similarities with these two dragons, so they were probably the the same wing (Wing means species of dragon).

"Well, this murderer was a male, and he looked like a SeaWing." I said. "He had a scar running along here," I took my talon and ran it along my side, showing them that that was where the scar was.

"Anything else?" Storm prompted me. Funnel peered at me from behind her. I thought for a moment. "Well, he also had these strange dragons with burn-y talons. My friend and I actually got attacked by them."

Storm looked at me. I couldn't tell what the expression on her face meant. Anger? Curiosity? We stood there, and I wasn't sure what to do. I think I told them too much.

"Storm, you know he's come now." Funnel spoke up. "He's going to..."

The ground started shaking. It was just like when I found Arrow and Scorch fighting in the forest, with trees swaying a bit too violently, hearing some cricks and cracks from the distance. This shaking stopped after a moment or two, but then again, I can't keep track of time when the ground does this.

"Uhm, where's this friend of yours?" Storm asked, trying to dig her claws into the ground, like she was planning to root herself there in case another earthquake came.

"Our camp is over there," I pointed down the hill and to the left, where the area started to get grassy.

"Could you take us to him?" Funnel asked.

Next thing I knew, I was sharing some stories with these strangers at night. I found out these two dragons were StormWing, and TornadoWing, and they were fun to hang out with. Scorch and Funnel decided to go out and see if they could find berries, so they left Storm and I next to the warm fire.

After a few quiet moments of sitting on logs, I broke the silence. "Soo, you live all alone here?" I asked Storm.

"Yeah, pretty much." She told me. "My mom and dad died when I was a small dragonet, so I had no choice but to grow tough skin." She took two fish from out food pile, threw them into the fire, and watched them start to sizzle and smoke. Soon, they started to turn into a crisp.

"I found Funnel not too far from here, actually. I wasn't so lonely anymore." She said. I could tell she liked looking back on that story.

  "What about you?" Storm asked.

"Oh, I chose to run away from my forest," And family, I thought, but I left that part out. "I dunno, I felt like there was a voice telling me the path to take."

She nodded. "Well, I guess it's getting late," Storm said. "Funnel and I better get going." She got up.

"Bye, Snowy." She half opened her wings, and tried to catch the wind. I saw she caught a little bit.

"W-Wait!" I said, running up to her. I stood in front of Storm. "We have a campsite here, not too far away. You could join us. We could protect you and Funnel."

She looked at me, then up to the stars for some reason. I saw some glittering in her eyes as a reflection. She looked back to me.

"Alright, i'll come with you."

  "Wait, really?"

"Yep."

We walked back to the fire, while I chatted on about how nice most of my friends are, but how grumpy Arrow can be at times. She laid down on her log. The fire dimmed.

"Sometimes Scorch and Arrow argue with each other, but I can tell they like each other. I'm pretty sure they'll be friends one day, and admit it." I sat there quietly.

"What about you? Do you think-" I turned over to Storm, but I saw she slept through everything I said. I laughed to myself, and looked up to the sky, just like Storm did earlier, but thought something.

Mom, dad... Is it possible to miss someone you've never met? If you can hear me, show me a sign you're out there somewhere.

Nothing happened. I sighed, and laid down on my talons. I folded my wings at my side, and curled my tail over my snout. But just before I closed my eyes, I saw a twinkle in the distance.

We hear you, child. And yes. We've been missing you all our lives.

I smiled, but I couldn't go to sleep. Instead, I watched the twinkling star until morning came.
