8. Calvin Doesn't Know Anything

Previously:

But he knew, that his parents wouldn't talk if he was listening, so he could just eavesdrop.

No, he was not at all guilty.

Unfortunately, whatever fairy burst he had earlier wasn't coming back. He couldn't hear a single word from his room. He tried making a thumping sound around the room to see if his hearing was still powerful, but nope, his hearing was back to normal.

Dam.

He sighed. He trusted his parents, didn't he. They would tell him if it concerned him.

His mind wandered to Derek and how he had trusted that everything will be fine now that they were here. Why did he trust them to do anything?

Who were his parents?

He looked at the book he was holding in his hand.

'Wings of fire.' Calvin chuckled at the irony.

With his mind filled with thoughts and body moving on autopilot putting his books on the bookshelf and putting the photos where he thought they looked good, he went into his mind space he often went into.

"Calvin, God dammit, Calvin. Mr. Boring is taking a test. Hey!" Baedon said, as Calvin's mind was snapped back from the makeshift world he had gotten lost into. But to be fair, he really didn't need to know about the teacher's cat's gastrointestinal issues.

"Yeah, yeah, sorry..." calvin said, his head snapping back to the blackboard.

"Honestly Calvin, sometimes I wonder what am I to do with you?"

"Nothing," Calvin gave a cheeky smile, "just keep being a crazy friend."

"Hey!"

"Hey Calvin, back to imagine-world again?" Sally said, as she entered the room.

"No, I just...I miss Braedon." Calvin said, embarrassed that tears were forming in his eyes.

"Its barely been a day, Calvin. Besides, once you make new friends here, you'll not miss Braedon anymore." She said, in her soothing motherly voice.

"That's what I am worried about. I don't want to forget Braedon."

"You needn't. Beside, the amount of time you talked about him, I was starting to think you are gay." Sally said, "Come on dinner's ready. Mathew and Heather have came over, along with Susan." She said.

"Who's Susan?"

"Their daughter."  She said, hopping down the petal with a little flap if her wings, which made her land softly in the next petal instead of landing- thump. She looked very graceful. Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for Calvin. He slipped on the curvy part of the petal and had to flail his arm like a hen to keep balance.

They jumped into another room towards Calvin's right, the room on which the demon had fallen.

There, around a round table sat his dad and Mathew, talking while waving their forks all around them. Heather was talking to a girl about Calvin's age, probably Susan.

She had hairs somewhere between brown and blonde, like her mother, which were falling in soft curls around her face, framing it and making her already distinct jaw more sharp. He nose was a little too small for her face, and there was little scar right below her right eye. It looked like claw mark. Her eyes were...stunning.

They were bluish white, almost an impossible shade of blue. Blue and white seemed to dance in her eyes the same way orange, red and yellow may dance in a fire. And fire was good comparison for her eyes, because the blue held a sort of energy and sharpness, that made Calvin didn't  think twice before dismissing the thought to ever make her angry.

She was talking to Heather. Her voice was unlike her mother, strong and deep. It could have easily passed as that of a teenage male, or if she specifically deepened her voice, it could very well be a good impression of a deep pitched grown male.

Calvin's mother sat down beside Heather and Calvin had to sit between the chair between his dad and Susan. His dad was deep in conversation with Mathew (they were talking something about...ducks?), so either he could talk to Susan, or sit awkwardly alone.

Thankfully, Susan asked the first question, "So, you're Calvin McKay, huh?" Her face was continuously scanning his, for what, he didn't know. But Calvin could tell she wasn't going to trust him easily.

"Uh...yeah."

"So, you really have been living in the human world?"

"Umm, yes? Is it not normal?"

"Yeah," she said, dragging out the ehh, "It's rare, but not unusual. I mean most people wouldn't be stupid enough to leave the elemental kingdom. But I understand why your parents had to go!"

"Really? Why?" Calvin asked, having not thought of this before.

"Wait, you don't know?" She asked, a look of surprise on her face.

Calvin shook his head. He noticed his father had became distracted from his conversation with Mathew. Like when he asked him a doubt in maths and he's watching his favourite TV show.

"Wow ok. You know, when your mother had you, there was this little rebellion and your mom had tons of compilations, so they took you to the human world for your safety. Of course, what everyone thinks is that they went because they were overworked, but my dad gets to know more, because our parents are basically family." She said in one long breath as if she was speaking a dialogue.

"But what does some rebellion has to do with my parents and me?" Calvin asked.

Her voice lowered to a whisper, "Look, if I tell you here, our parents will hush us, but I think what my parents told me isn't the truth. I'll tell you once we get to my room, okay?" Again, her face had a look of uncertainty on it, as if wondering whether she should regret telling him that.

"Okay." Calvin said, too overwhelmed by the information he was getting.

"So you have any friends?" Susan asked, now without a whisper. Calvin had to appreciate her acting skills. How can you go from a conspiracy  theorist to casual friend in a second?  She pulled her plate of dinner towards her. Calvin did too, and thankfully, it wasn't worms.

"Yes, one. Braeden." Calvin said.

"Why do you say 'yes'? Can't you say 'yeah' or 'ya' like normal people?"

"Why does everyone keep asking me that?" Calvin asked. He looked out of the corner of his eyes both the dads trying to throw peas into each other's mouths.

"What?" Susan asked, confused. Calvin put a round, bright, blue thing on his plate in his mouth. It tasted gooey. And sour. He liked it.

"Nothing. How many friends do you have?

"One, if we count you." She said. She put a piece of weird moon shaped fruit in her mouth.

"So, in other words, you don't have any friends?"

"Yes. You have any issue with that?" She asked, her eyes getting sharp.

"No, of course not. Just asking." She reminded him of MJ from spiderman.

"I will start school from tomorrow. So, maybe we will make friends there." She said. Again with the disgusted look.

"You don't have any friends in the neighborhood?" She scrunched up her nose.

"Not really. It's the nobles area. And most of the kids are snobby and arrogant. You're the only noble who hasn't showed off his skills at me or tried to flirt with me or both. Which is ironic, since your parents are in the highest rank of noble, right after the king and queen."

"Wait...I am a noble?"

She snorted, "You really don't know anything, do you?"

"Nevermind, I'll ask my parents." He said.

"Sheesh, I was just kidding. I will tell you all about it when we are in a little more secluded area. Oh wait, that came out wrong. Nevermind. You got it right?" She pushed her empty plate away.

Calvin picked up his plate and put it in the sink. He heard Susan mutter something suspiciously like 'goody two shoes!' before picking up her plate and following him to the kitchen.

"If its such a goody-two-shoes thing, then why did you do it?" He asked with a raised eyebrows.

"Because then my mom will eat me out alive, because you did. Come on now."

"Mom, we're going to my room." She said poking her head in the dining room and lead him to the house across the street.
