6. Calvin's Parents Are Badass
Previously:
"It's good for health, Sally!" His dad said, and winked at him. He then proceeded to fly inside the house then. He opened the curved door, which physically wasn't possible, but Calvin decided to ignore physics for the time being.
Calvin climbed up the knotted rope effortlessly and went inside the room. It had flat floor, and round walls surrounded them. It was the size of an average dining hall. It was lined in the sides with six doors, joining to the six petals he remembered seeing from outside.
Between the doors, curved yellow couches were put. There was a huge, glass chandelier in the middle of the room, making tingling sound in the air. Unlike the outside of the room, the insides were painted with bright shades of yellow and blue. It should not have gone together that well, but they did.
Both his parents folded their wings, and they went invisible like Uncle Mathew's had. Disappeared from existence.
Calvin went to his father and poked his back and side to see where the wings went.
"Ow! What are the hell are you doing?" His dad said.
"Language dad." Calvin said.
"When I curse, you say 'language dad', and when I don't you say 'I am not a kid anymore'. What's a dad supposed to do?"
"Here's what you do, don't say a word. Keep mum." Sally said.
"But you're the mum. I am dad!"
Both Calvin and his mother groaned and Calvin said, "Sometimes I wonder, whether I am the kid or dad?"
"Me duh!" His dad said.
His mom rolled her eyes and said, "Come on, I'll show you your room." She opened one of the doors and stepped in the petal outside, and climbed to the petal above it. And then to the topmost petal. Calvin followed.
"This feels like Jack and the beanstock." Calvin said. As his mother and Calvin were standing outside the room on the petal, a loud screech pierced the air. In the sky, two birds circled the air. And they weren't the uncle Mathew kind of birds, they were real birds.
They looked like vultures, except that their necks were rotten away, a red splotched bone was jutting out from one of their backs. They looked like creatures of his nightmares.
Faster than he could say 'demons', his mother had pushed him inside the room and closed the door behind him. He quickly went to the curved window, without registering anything in the room and looked out. He couldn't see his mother from here, but from her direction an arrow came flowing towards one of the vultures, lodging itself in it's wings. It fell on the ground with a screech.
He saw his father unfurl his wings and fly down, with a sword somehow in his hand. He cut the vulture in two equal parts and Calvin wondered why he neither looked away and nor was scared at the sight of the blood specked shirt of his dad.
Another arrow pierced the heart of the second demon, making it fall with a screech on the ground in front of his dad. His dad tugged it with his foot to make sure it was dead and turned to his mom who had flown down.
They tugged out the arrows and and wiped them on their clothes and put it back in her quiver, like it was the most normal thing in the world.
They looked at each other with worried faces. Calvin could tell that these kind of attacks were not normal. A fairy flew down from the house opposite to theirs with her wand raised.
"David! Sally!" She said, "Mathew told me you were coming. And quite the dramatic entrance too."
They were a good distance away from Calvin's room, but Calvin could hear them with crystal clarity. Calvin decided not to dwell on it now.
"That's not the point, what are demons doing in the middle of the city?" His mom asked with a frown.
"Its been like that for two-three years now. Ever since Kinney's took over...it's been all downhill."
"Why?" Sally asked.
"He took over the treasury and is hiring the demon slayers with higher salaries who have loyalty to him. And that too with the state money. Most of the slayers went to him, and those who didn't ended up in wrong situations mysteriously." The woman said, "Mathew and a few others tried to protest, but honestly, the people are scared after what happened to the slayers who refused."
"But what's the point? He's just losing money with higher salary, by making a personal army and making them them do the work they would've anyways done with lesser salary?" Dad said.
"No. The commoner areas are left unguarded, and the nobles have to pay extra money to get basic demon protection. Mathew refused, obviously, and now, all of our areas are unprotected." She said.
"But..." Her mom started, and was cut off by the woman, "The demon attacks have been terribly frequent this past month. I think Finney is knowingly sending them so we pay the charge to him for protection. There are attacks every single day, and I believe not even half of Finney's army is working on it."
"Derek was right, a lot has changed in fifteen years." His dad said. Calvin heard a crash behind him. He turned, and in front of him was a short wolf like creature. It had horns like a bull, and its fur was striped black and read. It had fox tail, and sharp claw. Its teeth were bared at him and its eyes were solid yellow with no pupils. It looked like something right out of Egyptian mythology.
"MOM! DAD!" He yelled. The demon took a leap at him, and he jumped clumsily onto the bed and ran to the other side of the room. The wolf jumped after him and landed on the middle of the bed. The bed was on the middle of the room, and there was no place he could run to that was not within the reach of its jump.
Wherever the wolf's claws had touched, the area was torned and smoking green.
He raked his brain for something. The wolf readied for a pounce. He looked at its stance. The wolf would go a lot farther than jumping on Calvin, from what it looked. Its claws would graze his face and he would land on the other side.
Calvin frantically looked everywhere. If the wolf's claws got anywhere near his face, it would definitely claw his eyes or nose. Good chance that it would be fatal.
Calvin's heart beat into his ribcage, the demon leaned back on his hind legs, getting ready for a pounce. Calvin sucked in a breath, and the wolf pounced...
