36. The story of Krishna
Calvin woke up to the sound of birds chirping. He realised he was in a sleeping bag, out in the open. It seemed like it was morning time, or evening, judging from the sun.
"How are you feeling now?" Ria asked. She looked tried and exhausted, but no worse for wear.
The events of the previous...how long has it been? "I feel I just witness the formation of Narnia and I was Uncle Andrew."
Ria gave him a look that said 'seriously?'
"I mean, I physically, I'm good as a horse. Mentally...Oh my gods, Kiara! Is she...is she..."
"Dead? She was."
Hope bloomed in his chest, "Was?"
"Look, this is complicated. I saw her boil to death. She was definitely dead, I can bet. But after you did that magic turn-hell-into-heaven thing, she just...sort of started breathing."
"Like life had been blown into her." Susan said, coming. from somewhere. She looked at him pointedly.
The past events caught up to him. It didn't make any sense. But one thing was clear, the prophecy has came into being, and that 'The spirit of Devfronds has been awakened' thing has brought Kiara back to life.
And despite all the events that had happened in the past few days, that's all he cared about. It's funny how you can get attached to people in a few days, isn't it?
"How is she?"
"She is...why don't you see for yourself?" Ria said.
Calvin snuggled out of his sleeping bag and followed Susan and Ria out of what he assumed was the cave of death before the Super Narnia Transformation.
They led him across a meadow of sorts, "I'm pretty sure the rocky island was not this large."
"It isn't. We're on a different island, fit to accommodate eleven people, with proper privacy." Susan replied.
"Uh, how long has it been?"
"You were out for two days. It's about 1am now."
"Are you sure your watch isn't broken? It doesn't look like the middle of the night to me."
"Apparently, after years with no days around here, this place has no night now. The sun hasn't set in three days."
"Oh. Seems like a cool vacation spot."
Susan snorted, "Yeah, no. It's still the land of demons. Even if it looks like a nice place."
"I...it didn't occur to me."
"Of course it didn't. I thought you knew you were stupid." Susan said.
"It was weird." Ria said, looking far away, " When we were on that smaller island, the demons seemed to steel clear of the area. Now we are here, they move away from this area."
"Why, though?"
Susan gave him a 'are you kidding' look. "You're a dummy." She announced.
"Cut him some slack. We've had three days to think it over." Ria said.
"Still a dummy." Susan said. "Point is, Calvin, they're scared of you. And I can't believe I'm saying this either."
"I...I'm so sorry. All that things in the lake...I didn't mean to..."
"...save our lives?" Susan supplied.
"Huh?"
"Admitted, killing all of them was a little ruthless. But they wouldn't have batted an eyelash before killing us. You saved our lives, dummy." Susan said.
"And I also killed Kiara."
"Yes, you did." Ria said. Maybe she hated him. Heck, he hated himself too, "But you brought her back too."
"And you did both of it unintentionally. You're such a dummy." Take a wild guess who said that.
"Score. You called me a dummy trajillion times in the past one minute."
Susan shrugged, "Deserved it."
They walked into a clearing of a ring of trees, where Kiara was sleeping under the shade of a tree. No, not sleeping. She was unconscious.
Calvin knelt down beside her. She looked like sleeping, her hands on her stomach which was slowly rising and falling.
"She's unconscious?" Calvin asked.
Ria shook her head, and spoke in whisper, as if it would disturb Kiara, "No. Its...I can't detect. Her brain activity is fast enough for her to be conscious. But...its like her life is being restored slowly."
"I'm so sorry. It's my fault."
Ria crossed her hands, "You know, I'm tempted to call you a dummy too. We've been through this. It's not your fault. But, we need to find a way out of here, and get her professional medical help. There is only so much I can do."
"What do you mean find a way? Wasn't the whole thing live streamed? Won't someone come and rescue us? Wait, it's been three days. Why?"
Susan bit the inside of her lips, a nervous habit. "The tower was attacked. I don't think they will be able to rescue us anytime soon. And it's not long before the demons' fear ebbs away and they start attacking again."
"Hmm. Yes. But what now?"
"I don't know, Calvin." Susan said, "Everyone is looking at you for leadership."
Calvin squeaked, "Me?"
"Well, you're a prince. Take up the leadership. Speaking of which, I think you owe all of these people an explanation."
Calvin nodded, "Yeah. I do." In his nervousness, he didn't even notice he said 'yeah' instead of 'yes'.
They gathered everyone around a tree and Calvin began explaining everything, starting from the prophecy he read to his dream. Breadon and Susan supplied when he felt a lull in the story.
After he finished speaking, James whistled, "Wow. That's messed up."
Calvin smiled bitterly, "Tell me something new."
"So, what now?" A girl with blonde hairs and silver orbs asked.
Follow the rocks to the large mountain.
Calvin repeated what Karen said. He pointed to a line of white pebbles - the kind you put as decoration in homes, along the stream.
"Why?" Ria asked.
Calvin shrugged, "Angel senses."
It's time the king and queen are rescued.
Calvin didn't repeat that. They magically bind Kiara to a sleeping bag, and minimised her.
"Braedon, how did you get those minimizing pills?"
Braedon grinned, "I'm not saying."
"He stole it." Susan supplied.
Braedon shrugged unashamedly.
After arranging Kiara on Ria's stomach like a kangaroo, they started following the line of rocks Karen had indicated to.
As they walked, Calvin told Susan, Braedon and Ria where they were going.
"So, how is this two parents thing going to work?" Susan asked.
Calvin bit his lips and replied, "You know the story of Krishna?"
She shook her head.
"So, basically, there was this Hindu god. His uncle (who was a king) put his parents in dungeons, because there was a prophecy that his sister's seventh child will kill him. It's sort of like greek hero Perseus's grandpa, you know. He went the to Oracle..."
"Stick to one reference, bro. You're confusing us." Braedon said.
"Right. So, Krishna's mom, he was her seventh kid, when she gave birth to him, she smuggled him out of the prison to a friend of theirs in a village."
"But, how?"
Calvin shrugged. "Gods. Anyways, so he grew up thinking his parents were someone else. When he was a teenager, he killed his uncle in wrestling, I think, and then freed his parents."
Susan caught up to what he was saying, "His parents were kings and queens too. And his adoptive parents were besties with the king and queen too."
"Right. And he is known as Nanda Kishor too, that means the son of Nanda, the adoptive father. And he is also known as Vāsudev, the son of Vasudev."
"Vāsudev, the son of Vasudev? That's...creative." Susan said.
"Point is, if he can have two sets of parents, so can I. I'm not going to give up calling the people who raised me mom and dad just because I'm not their son by blood. And the king and queen...well, I may not know them, but they're family."
Susan smiled, "I'll leave the sentimental stuff to you. But, what makes you think the king and queen are in Devfronds?"
Does she doubt the superior power of angel senses?
Calvin shrugged, "Karen says so. And she always turns out right, doesn't she?"
"Yeah."
They walked for about half a day, picking fruits from trees. The vampire, Black, was really good at judging if a plant was poisonous or not.
And Calvin had a field day with that name.
They surprisingly didn't feel tired even after walking so long. Maybe it was the effect of months of training, maybe it was something in the air, maybe both, he didn't know.
They came to end of the rock trial. It ended abruptly, in a straight line. It was like he rocks were cut there.
Calvin realized it at the same time as Braedon. Together, Ria and Susan and Calvin (who was now as good at magic as them, after awakening of his aqua side) removed the illusion in the air.
In front of them, were two rooms. Plane grey cubes, with no windows, barely the size of a kids room in a tiny apartment. Just perfect to hold long time prisoners.
And in between the rooms, stood Finney. Along with an army of about twenty people.
"Well, well. Look who it is. I really thought you were dead." He said.
"Aww, but you can't get rid of me that easily." Calvin replied with a cheeky smile.
And just like that, the ten of them engaged with twenty of them. They were outnumbered two to one. And they were kids, the adults were better trained.
Also, Calvin's side didn't kill. The others were plain trying to kill them.
Summon the demons.
"What?" Calvin could feel Karen roll her eyes.
You have the spirit of Devfronds. The demons obey you. Summon them.
"But how?" Calvin dodged an arrow and jabbed at his sword at his neighbour.
No reply.
Calvin dodged a hex, and tried to channel the anger he felt back at the point.
Nothing.
Calvin closed his eyes and tried to channel his anger. He thought of Umbridge, Gabe, Octivian.
Still nothing. He felt a push at his shoulder and he fell with a thud on the ground, the weight of someone on his body.
His eyes flew open and saw Braedon on the top of him in a very unflattering position.
"What do you think you're doing? Closing eyes in the middle of the battle?" He almost yelled.
His eyes fell on Breadon's shoulder. A dagger was sticking out of it. His vision tunneled.
His powers have hurt enough friends. Now, they'll hurt enemies.
And just like that, monsters from around the place- flying eagle hybrids, fangs, horns everything swarmed into the place. Friends and foes alike turned to the demons, halting the fight.
His friends looked at him uncertainly. He was standing with his body strong, head high and chest open.
And the monsters attacked.
Except now, they pretended like his friends didn't exist. In five minutes, Finney and his people were cornered into a force field, doing their best to keep the force field up against the demons.
But Calvin wasn't a monster. He wasn't going to kill him.
"Surrender. And I'll send them away."
Finney eyes widened, "Yes, yes. I surrender. Please, just take these away from me." He pleaded.
He was about to call the monsters off, when Susan said, "Wait. Throw your weapons out of the shield."
The soldiers exchanged worried glances, before Finney rushed them into throwing them.
"Now, on your knees, hands up." Susan said.
They dejectedly came on their knees with their hands up. Only the guys forming the shields were standing.
Susan gave Calvin a nod, "You're naive, you know that?"
"Sorry."
"You're impossible to argue with when you keep apologising. Take the demons away, but only enough for them to lower the shield."
He did.
Then Susan brought them on their knees, before ordering Calvin to pull the remaining demons away.
At that time, when he saw his enemies on their knees, tied up, his parents but a room away, Susan, Braedon, Ria and the others at his side, he felt safe even if he was, technically, the most unsafe he has ever been.
Maybe the land king is still after him, maybe his public feat is going to cause a huge media disaster, maybe he had to learn to live with two pairs of parents, as a prince.
But he has his friends and family by his side and that's all that matter. And he had the support of Karen.
The End
Do not call me Karen.
