2. Calvin Meets A Bird Fugitive

Previously :

It was then, that a man tumbled into his house through the balcony. And he wasn't just any man either. On both side of him, from his shoulder to his waist, brown long feathers erupted, like that in a bird. His arms were pressed on a part of his shoulder blade, where blood was trickling down from.

His wings too looked like a hurt bird's wings. Calvin's eyes widened, and the man smiled at him and said, "If you can see me, you must not be a human. Now help me with this wounds, will you?"

The more Calvin observed him, the weirder he got. His feathers were brownish, like that of an eagle. His nose was slightly long. Not long enough to look weird, he would probably not have given it a second thought if he saw it anywhere but compared with the wings, it looked distinctly beak-like.

As Calvin made no indication to move, mostly out of fear and disbelief, he said, "Ah yes! Mama raised you right. We must not let strangers into the house. But I am a demon patrol officer."

He took out a card from his pant pocket, which he realized was not at all pants. His thighs were covered upto the knees by the tunic he was wearing, below which there were two sets of leather coverings tied together with threads like hiking boots. His knees were covered with leather pads too making his legs look like they were covered in armour.

Surprisingly, that was all the armour he had on. His upper body only had a cotton tunic covering it.

'Probably the reason he's bleeding out.' Calvin thought, 'So irresponsible.'

Calvin looked blankly at the card he was showing, and said, "Parents these days! So irresponsible."

"Excuse me?" Calvin said incredulously. He had often been told his parents were very responsible and reliable people. Who was this random man coming to his house and insulting his parents

"Oh, so you do have a tongue on you. Okay fine, explaining will take too long. Get me the first aid kit, at least. I am bleeding." He said, exasperated. Calvin noticed that the hand with which the guy was covering the wound was getting distinctly red.

Calvin frantically nodded and rushed to get the first aid kit, but not before locking the 'demon patrol officer' in the balcony. Dude had the audacity to roll his eyes. He may not know the guy, but he was not going to let him bleed out in his house.

After he gave him the first aid kits, and he got to work to wrap his own shoulders, his fingers flying smoothly but gently on the wound, wrapping a gauze expertly around his shoulder blade, beneath his armpit and a little over the part of his wings that connected to his shoulders. Calvin found himself impressed by the show. He couldn't even put on his own band-aid.

After watching for three minutes in silence, his homework now stood forgotten, he couldn't resist himself, "Are you a bird?" He asked.

The man chuckled, "Yeah, you could say that. I am a hybrid bird. An eagle, best for demon patrollers, I tell you! So, tell me, what are your parent's names? I might have heard of them somewhere. Goodness know, ours is a small world."

"Really? How many people like you are there?" Calvin asked with interest, all the while avoiding giving away his parent's name.

"Don't think I didn't see what you did there, kid. There are about a thousand of us in air kingdom. Same amount in aqua, I suppose. Never got to verify though, awful enemies, air and aqua. And about double that on the land."

"That's...not a small world. I mean four thousand people is rather small,  compared to total human population but there's no way you know all of them." Calvin reasoned.

"Yeah, not all of them. But I probably know of them all. Being a demon patrol officer is a lot of paperwork."

"Are there really demons in your world?" Calvin asked softly, his mind going through so many books he read. Yet, this was not some fanfiction. He was not going to be a part of some story!

He put down the gauze he was using and folded his wings. Calvin blinked his eyes, such large wings surely couldn't be folded to invisibility?

"In our world, kid. You're a part of it too. And yes there are demons, birds, angels, fairies, werewolves, mermaids and what nots."

"You're kidding!" Calvin exclaimed.

"Am not, kid. Now, who are your parents." He said, and Calvin racked his brain for some distraction. He couldn't just give some random man his details. He might be a fugitive. A bird fugitive, but a fugitive nonetheless. Just then, the bell rang and after a moment, rang again twice.

"Its mom." Calvin said, with a huge grin and ran towards the door. He probably shouldn't have left the man alone, but his brain tended to short circuit when it came to his parents. Yes, maybe he was being over dramatic and clingy, but when you live so long without many friends, your parents become your friends.

He opened the door and hugged his mom. She was a lithe woman, rather fit with well toned muscles for someone who cashed checks all day. She had black hair, like Calvin, and eccentric blue eyes.

She put down her bag and hugged him back. Her eyes moved smoothly over the house like they always did before coming to halt at the balcony. The bird fugitive gasped, "Angel, that's your son?"

His mom turned to the voice, and said, her voice sounding pleasantly surprised, "Mathew, what are you doing here?"

"You've not changed at all. Always answering my questions with questions." Mathew complained, "How can you give birth to such a cultured boy?"

"While I am honoured you called my son cultured, I don't like the implication of your statement." His mom quipped right back like she had done it numerous times before.

Calvin waved his hand in front of them, "Hello? I am here too! You guys know each other?"

"Yes, this is Mathew, my childhood friend." She said. She looked at him now, like this had complicated things. Calvin hated being looked at like that.

"A smart child you've raised, Angel, he wouldn't let me out of the balcony." Mathew commented, "Or paranoid. Though I believe that might be David's fault."

"Don't call my mother, Angel. Her name's Sally." Calvin said, with a scowl. He didn't like strangers flirting with his mom, even if she seemed to know him.

"And protective too." He added.

"Wait, are you telling me you came into the balcony? The kid doesn't know anything!"

"Relax, he's taking it well. Right curious child he is!"

"Don't call me a child. I am fourteen, for God's sake." Calvin said indignantly.

"Okay, okay, wait." His mom said, "Calvin tell me how much you know."

"Okay. There is a secret Harry Potter world which apparently, you're a part of. And it has demons and fairies and angels and all other kinds of things, and there is aqua kingdom and air kingdom and land kingdom with about 4000 people. And this guy's a bird, apparently."

"Calvin's sharp. He has picked up even the smaller details I might have said." Mathew said.

"Yeah, you tend to talk. Goodness know how you became a demon patrol officer." His mom teased, "Come on, Calvin, I guess I will tell you all about your world. Our world. We were going to tell you soon anyways. The school starts when one turns fifteen, so a few days early, because of some bombarding idiot." She gave Mathew a pointed glance.

"Wait, I am going to join this...this school?"

"Yes. You'll learn to fly and to hold your wings and all other sorts of stuff."  She said.

"Well, Angel, I'll take your leave. You're moving in your old house, right?" He asked. He looked like he wanted to ask a lot of questions, but probably held back because of Calvin. Calvin really hoped his mom didn't have a secret bird-boyfriend.

"Yeah. Most probably." His mom said uncertainly. Calvin could practically see her mind running miles per second.

Mathew made his way to the edge of the balcony. Calvin wondered how no one noticed a man flying with large wings. Mr. Williams lived in the balcony. "I'll have it cleaned then. Oh, and I forgot to mention, school starts from two days from now. Its been preponed."

"Why?"

"Its been like that for a few years, Angel." Calvin bit back a retort for calling her Angel, "you know, management changes. You have missed a lot in fifteen years."

"Okay, then we'll have to move in tomorrow itself. Math, do me a favour and get the house cleaned will you?"

"Anything for my Angel." He curtised like a fancy prince, "And, don't call me Math! You know I hate it."

Calvin bit back his smile unsuccessfully when his mother said, "Well my son said he hated you calling me Angel too."

"Don't look smug kid, we are next door neighbours from tomorrow. Its once Sally has taken your side. She'll take mine next time." He said and flew away, bobbing a little here and there because of his injured wing.

"He's as childish as ever." His mother sighed.
