Chapter Five - Illusions And Questions
Thea did not put her book down. Never before had she been so intrigued by such stories. Her father never allowed her to read anything which would open her mind to outside views. She lacked in outside influences and Mulo preferred it this way.
Lying in her bed, reading page after page about the legends of the gods and goddesses, Thea had an idea. She wanted to go outside. And she did not mean her tiny secluded patch of grass.
She rose quickly, fetched her long black cotton cloak and floated along the corridor, past her Fathers room as quietly as she could, down the spiral stairs, to Onas' room. She knocked on the wooden door gently.
Onas pulled his door open, and smiled at Thea before ushering her in.
"I want to go outside," Thea declared bravely.
"Child, are you sure?" Onas replied hushing her and turning to shut the door behind them.
"Yes. I want to go exploring, I want to feel the grass."
"You know of grass?" Onas asked back. Thea shyly nodded. "Child there is more than grass outside, there are trees and animals. Sunlight, starlight, many things." He shuffled towards a messy bookcase, covered in many books. Thea watched him carefully.
"I am not magic Thea; I don't know what you want from me. How do you think I can help you?" He walked over to a desk, and pulled open draws, looking inside for something.
"I know Onas, of course, I just hoped maybe you had an idea on how I could get out of here."
Onas paused as he found what he was looking for. He lifted out a large silver hand mirror. It was decorated in grooves and swirls around the handle. Walking over to Thea, he handed it to her.
"What is it?" Thea asked, taking the mirror from him and reaching it to her face.
"It is the Illusion Mirror. This can help you leave the castle but you will need an item which belongs to someone else. A soldier or a follower perhaps. And then you chant these words..." Onas shuffled back over to the draw again and pulled out a piece of parchment, which looked old.
"Jofi ni vimm, jofi..." Thea said the words out loud but Onas stopped her.
"Not yet, wait. Those of words from the ancient language of the gods." He took the parchment, rolled it up and placed it in her pocket. "Put the mirror in there too so no one sees it."
"Thank you Onas!" Thea grinned with her face filled with gratitude. She turned to walk out.
"Oh and if you want to know any more about the mirror. It shall be in your little book." Onas called as Thea skipped out the room. She ran back up the stairs, past her Fathers chambers and into her room.
She shut her door with a thump and leaped onto her bed, where she had left her book. She carefully took the silver mirror out from her pocket and placed it on the bed next to her. It was beautiful. She picked up the book once more and flicked through the pages, searching for information on the mirror.
She found the page and stared at it. It had beautiful illustrations on how it worked.
'The Illusion Mirror.
A bewitched item which gives the utilise the ability to disguise themselves as whomever they opt for. Engendered by The Moon Goddess as a gift for the Vampire God. A saccharine Irony that in fact Vampires do not have reflections and so could never utilise the Mirror themselves.
How to utilise:
Find a piece of apparel, be it a hat, a shirt, a cloak, and place the item on yourself. Look into the mirror, and chant the incantation. Keep reiterating until you descry you have transmuted forms.
Note: This is to be performed before sunrise. As when the sun elevates, the spell will break and you will be back to your former self.'
Thea looked at the Mirror again and then lifted towards her face. She had a reflection. She had never noticed that her father and the other vampires lacked reflections and wondered whether Onas had one. She stood once more and went to her bedroom window. From there she could see the people downstairs as it looked out to the cave courtyard. The followers of Mulo were very different to his soldiers and almost respected less by Mulo. Many of them were fragile men and women who had been out casted by the mortal world and wanted salvation. Mulo promised just that. Or at least he promised a place to live, a bed to recharge and food to eat, provided they went out and found it themselves. Food meaning blood of course. The Vampires, never needed human blood. They survived quite well on the blood of deer, foxes, cows or sheep, anything big enough. Many Vampires had attempted to go without blood for a long time, but the craving was just too much. They called this the Dark God syndrome.
Thea decided she was to choose a simple follower of whom Mulo had probably never acknowledged before. She noticed a small middle aged woman near a cart of barrels.
Thea made her way out of the castle. She tried her hardest to avoid any eye contact as she reached the cave walls near the entrance tunnel where the carts were kept. There she found the woman. She had brown to silver curly hair, and what seemed like green eyes. Thea crept closer from behind hoping not to be seen. She ducked behind the cart. The woman sat down on the ground and took her shoes off and then her dirty holey socks. She placed them down, not far from Thea's reach. Thea twisted her face, but knew this might be her only chance. As quickly as she could she reached her hand out and picked up one on the socks, placed it in her cloak pocket, lifted her hood and stood once more. She walked off swiftly into the shadows heading in the opposite direction without turning around. She made it back into the castle doors, walked along the corridor and up the stairs. As she turned to walk towards her room, her Father stepped out of his.
"Oh Thea. You should know what time it is I am sure." He spoke.
"Yes father, it is around midday." She lied. Thea very rarely knew the time. But Mulo assumed she did as a mortal.
"Very well, I think after some food I shall have a re charge." He replied and wafted past her and down the stairs from which Thea had just been.
Thea reached her room and took off her shoes. Picking up the old sock by the tip of her fingers, she looked at it in disgust. She placed it on her foot before she could changed her mind. She then picked up the mirror. She paused for a while thinking about her decision. Before shoving her items in her pocket again and heading to the disused sleeping chambers at the very back of the castle. She knew this would be a perfect place to transform and if she walked out as someone else, no one would bat an eyelid compared to a stranger leaving her bedroom.
Once inside the old dusty and disused bedroom, she reached out the Mirror again and then this time the piece of paper. She looked at herself, into her own dark eyes. Her black long hair flowed gently around her face.
"Jofi ni vimm, jofi ni puv. Jofi ni vimm, Jofi ni puv, Jofi, ni vimm..." She started to change, first her eyes, they swirled and swirled into a deep green. "Jofi ni puv, Jofi ni, vimm..." Then her ebony hair disappeared and twisted and turned into brown and grey streaky curls. She felt cold, but her heart was beating still, much faster than before. "Jofi ni vimm, jofi ni puv." She muttered. Then she paused. She looked at herself closer into the mirror, and she was no longer herself.
She hid the mirror under one of the unused beds and rushed out of the room and down the winding corridor. As she turned she noticed the real woman, entering the castle and heading for the kitchen. Luckily this was the opposite direction. Thea lifted the hood of her cloak over her head tightly and proceeded out the castle doors and into the courtyard. She strode past many people and they smiled and waved completely fooled. Walking over to the cart where she had previously saw the woman earlier, she stood around until the coast was clear. Many people were heading inside to have something to eat.
Then she headed down the dark tunnel entrance. Her heart thumped heavily and she was filling with anxiety. Her hands trembled but she clasped them together to control it. She was really leaving the cave. Walking past the guards who stood watch, they nodded at her as she walked down a small dip leading out into a small woodland area.
She looked in awe at the tall wooden beams, forming from the ground, twisting and turning and decorated with beautiful little green pieces. Leaves. They were large thick trees, of many types and sizes. And flowers, daisies and clovers, and dandelions graced the floor beneath her feet.
She twirled around as she felt the breeze dance around her. She looked up and the sun was blinding. Beaming down as if to greet her. She ran among the trees, deeper into the woodland, leaping over falling trees and mole hills.
Eventually she reached a river. A large wide river, but the water was calm and gentle. She paused for a moment, embracing it. She stepped over small stepping stones, which poked out from the water surface in no particular order. Thea carried on walking past the oak and walnut trees, large and thick trunks, with beautiful deep and bright green leaves waving in wind. She looked behind her and the Cave entrance was no longer insight. She was completely alone.
She floated about, touching the tree trunks, feeling the leaves, swirling and twirling. The sun shone down strongly through the tree canopy high above her, maybe it was midday after all. Apple trees were in front of her now and she wondered whether she was near an orchard of some sort, as they seemed so perfectly placed in a row. She edged around it, hoping she was not near any mortal village.
Between the trees she heard people talking, Thea paused for a moment before deciding to head back where she had come from and back into the woodland. She rushed through the trees in a panic, and then stopped as she came to an opening. A rock lay in the middle, quite a small rock, reaching to Thea's hip. Walking towards it she noticed a blue glow. Kneeling down beside the rock lay a man, a transparent man, with his eyes closed. He wore the bare minimum of clothing, and beaded necklaces among his neck. Thea stepped closer. As she did the man's eyes opened, they were blank and empty. But Thea's eyes widened in shock and the man slowly stood before her. He was much taller than she was, and she noticed this was because he was in fact floating inches from the ground below.
"Greed and power, darkness is coming. Greed and power and power and selfish manner. Onlu one can make the change. Don't believe those you think you can trust. For their heart is blacker than the darkest of crows!" The man screamed loudly towards Thea and formed into a ball of energy, and zipped off into the woods. Thea collapsed to the floor and propped herself against the rock for support. She noticed now the sun was lower in the sky, and was struggling to reach the ground below. Time went by so quickly on the outside. Thea stood and dashed back into the shadowy woods the opposite direction she had come. Looking behind her to see if she could spot the blue glow again.
Sprinting now she reached the cave entrance. The guards noticed her and one of them raised their hand out towards her as she got closer.
"Everything okay Agatha?" One guard asked cautiously. Thea nodded back smiling gently slowing her pace and walking into the tunnel. She reached the cloak over her head so it covered her face and headed back into the cave trying to avoid everyone. Walking through the castle doors, along the corridor and up the stairs once more she noticed her bedroom and made a quick dash before anyone could see her.
Shutting the door behind her, she ripped off her cloak, and reached for her book. Flicking though the pages quickly, her eyes scanned the words, trying to find any information on what or rather who the glowing blue man was.
