10: A Tool of Envy

A sigh escapes my lips as I flip through my notes. Being stuck in a carriage with Ciel and Alois is bad enough. The fact that none of our butlers are with us makes it worse. The awkward atmosphere is so thick, I could cut it with my dagger, and I almost want to out of boredom. Measurements of the woman's, now known as Katherine's, waist, bodice and height was written down in thin cursive. Along with this is the events leading to the zombification of her now deceased husband, Wallace.

After Wallace fell off a ladder, he had been acting strange. Things had been relatively normal at first for someone that had a head injury, but when things didn't go the way he wanted Wallace had become violent and impulsive. An inquiry from the Earl Phantomhive led to us discovering that Wallace had gone to the doctor immediately after he fell from the ladder, but not again after that. Wallace had killed himself about three days later. In private, Katherine wept as she told me how her husband had pushed her off the stairs after she refused to participate in marital activities. Katherine was pregnant at the time. She isn't anymore. The worst of it being that her husband, before the fall, had been gushing over the unborn child. It was the light of his life.

A light hand comes to rest on my clenched one. I immediately release the crumpled pages. How inappropriate of me. Blue eyes met my own and began to put me at ease. I straighten my skirt and sit a little taller as I politely cross my ankles. Better.

Alois wraps an arm around my waist and lightly entangles his fingers with mine. Our rings kiss. I let my head fall into the crook of his neck as I slowly shut my eyes. Surely, the boy across from us can say nothing. His betrothed was absolutely horrid. Last night I hadn't slept for long and today has been utterly exhausting. Can't he grant me this?

The blue haired boy speaks up and wakes me before I even begin to dream. Unable to hold his frustration in any longer, he shouts "Why must you touch each other so much?!" He throws his hands up and his uncovered eye grows with frustration.

I'm caught on the fence of anger, embarrassment and laughter. Nervous giggles erupt from my throat as I scoot away from the blonde boy, "I don't know... it just happens."

Alois gets a devilish look in his eyes and swoops me away from my proper seat and plops me down onto his warm lap. My escape was a failure, but words most definitely succeeded. Every movement he made was recognized by my body. His hands as they dance down my sides. His lips as they caress my skin in the faintest way possible. His heart as it beats its steady rhythm going un-wavered by nerves. "Why do you care? Are you jealous?" Alois' playful words cause heat to rise through my body; but not in passion. In fury. How dare he simply use me to spite Ciel!

I'm a lady. Alois is not my betrothed. However reluctantly, I forcefully break the Queen's spider's grip before sitting as far from him as possible in the small carriage, which is only about the length of two footsteps. I silently catch my breath. "Alois, it seems like Ciel is getting the wrong idea. We are merely good friends," I say to the Earl. "That's all."

I don't look to see eitherof their reactions. They were both very inconsiderate towards me: Ciel with hisquestions and Alois with his actions. With swift movements, I open the carriagedoor. I look warmly upon the fast moving ground before I step out of thevehicle. Loud shouts follow me as well as a pale hand, but I do not knowwhose.
