Chapter 22: Working With Dr. Connors

(The next day)

Y/N's P.O.V

Right now I'm on my way to Oscorp to get to work with Dr. Connors.

As I walk down the street I get a call from Tory.

Tory: Hey, Y/N.

Y/N: Hey, what's going on?

Tory: Well, I actually wanted to ask you something.

Y/N: Okay.

I look up to see Oscorp up ahead and I go to cross the street.

Tory: Do you maybe want to hang out tonight?

Y/N: As in just the two of us?

Tory: Yeah. Just us.

Is she asking me out right now? I can't tell.

Tory: So, do you want to?

Y/N: Uh, yeah. I mean I'd love to, but I can't. I'm gonna be working at Oscorp with Dr. Connors tonight. I'm sorry, Tara.

Tory: No, it's okay. I understand. What you're working on with him is important.

Y/N: But how about another time?

Tory: Yeah, definitely.

I smile.

Y/N: Alright, great.

Tory: Cool.

Y/N: Well, I better go. I'll talk to you later.

Tory: Okay. Bye.

Tory then hangs up.

I walk into Oscorp and take the elevator up.

(Five minutes later)

So, I've just walked into Dr. Connors main lab.

He and I are working on a Cross-Species genetics project to help hundreds of people.

We've worked on the algorithm and today we're gonna test it.

I turn and see Dr. Connors walk in.

Y/N: Dr. Connors.

He turns to face me and smiles.

Curt: Ah, Y/N. Good to see you.

I walk over to him and we shake hands.

Y/N: So, today is the day, huh?

Curt: Yes. Today we run the simulation test. And assuming it works, we can test it.

Y/N: Great.

Dr. Connors loss the use of his right arm in an accident seven years ago.

And ever since he's been looking for a way to help himself and others like him.

Now he has to use a wheelchair to get around.

Dr. Connors brings up a hologram of a lizard.

Curt: As you can tell, this is a hologram of a lizard. Now, these wonderful creatures are able to grow entire limbs at will and heal incredibly quickly. You can see my envy.

Y/N: I do. If we can isolate the lizard DNA we can use the Decay Rate Algorithm to help the mouse regrow his limb.

Curt: We'll do it.

He and I work at the computers and after a few minutes we have the simulation ready.

Y/N: Okay, it's ready. Cross your fingers, Doc.

I imput the everything that's needed.

Y/N: Alright, that should do it.

The simulation starts running.

Computer: Running Decay Rate Algorithm. Pending. Pending... failed. Subject deceased.

The mouse dies in the simulation a few times.

Dr. Connors turns away.

Computer: Pending... test complete.

Y/N: Doc, it worked. Look.

He turns back and sees it.

He then smiles.

Curt: It worked. I can't believe it.

He looks at me and puts his hand on my arm.

Curt: Thank you, Y/N.

I nod.

Y/N: It wasn't just me, Doc. We did it together.

(Ten minutes later)

Dr. Connors and I are now testing it on the real mouse.

He puts the serum into the injector, while I hold the mouse in my hands.

I kneel down so he can inject the serum into the mouse.

Y/N: Hey, buddy. It'll be okay.

Curt: Okay, careful now. Don't wanna prick you by mistake. Human trials aren't until next week.

He injects the serum into the mouse and I put him back in his cage.

I can't believe the algorithm worked.

I sigh.

Y/N: So, what do we do now?

Curt: We wait. And once we know if it worked, we'll start human trails. I'd like you to be there for that as well, Y/N.

I smile.

Y/N: Really?

Curt: Of course. I wouldn't have been able to crack it if it wasn't for you, son.

I nod.

Y/N: I'll be here, Doc. Don't worry.

He smiles.

Curt: Thank you, Y/N. For all your help.

He and I shake hands.

Y/N: Anytime, Dr. Connors.

Curt: Now, you should get home. You've earned the rest.

I nod.

Y/N: Got it. See ya soon, boss.

I then leave the lab and head home.

(Twenty minutes later)

I web swing home and walk into the house.

I then see dad sat on the couch.

Y/N: Hey, dad.

He turns to look at me.

Henry: Hi, kiddo. How did the test at Oscorp go?

I walk over to the couch and sit with him.

Y/N: It went really well. The test worked and if all goes well, we'll be starting human trails next week.

He smiles.

Henry: That's amazing, Y/N.

Y/N: It is. If all of this works, we'll be able to help hundreds of people. Help them regrow limbs, allow them to have their normal lives back.

He smiles.

Henry: That's great. I'm so proud of you, son. Your mother would be too.

I smile.

Y/N: I hope so. I'm trying to make her proud, dad.

Henry: I know and you are.

I sigh.

Y/N: Well, I'm gonna go and get some sleep.

Henry: Okay, buddy.

I stand up.

Y/N: Night, dad.

Henry: Goodnight.

I walk upstairs and go to my bedroom.

All I want to do is sleep right now.
