Chapter 16: A Talk With The Mentor

Y/N's P.O.V

I'm now on a rooftop near where the Ferry incident happened.

I've taken off my suit as I've made a decision.

Just then Rhodes flies over and lands down.

Rhodey: Hey, kid.

I turn to him.

Y/N: Is everyone okay?

He retracts his helmet.

Rhodey: Everyone's fine. Don't worry. Why are holding your suit?

Y/N: Because I'm done. Can you give it back to Mr. Stark for me?

I hand it over to him.

He sets it down on the ledge.

Rhodey: What are you talking about?

Y/N: I'm done, Rhodey. I'm not Spider-Man anymore.

Rhodey: What?

Y/N: Rhodes, look at what happened. Those people on the ferry almost died.

Rhodey: Kid, that's not your fault.

Y/N: It is. I mean I was good when I was fighting in a team, I could handle it. But the first time I try to take down the bad guys on my own, everyone nearly dies.

Rhodey: Look, I know this didn't go the way you had hoped, but you can't just give up. This city needs you.

Y/N: No, it doesn't. The city was fine before I came along, it'll be okay without me. Hell, it'll be better of. I'm sorry, man. I'm Spider-Man no more.

I walk away and leave the rooftop.

(One hour later)

I've just come back home and see dad sat on the couch.

Y/N: Hey, dad.

He turns to me.

Henry: Hey, kiddo. I heard about what happened on the ferry. Are you okay?

Y/N: No, I'm not. I messed up and people almost died. I'm no hero.

Henry: Y/N, I...

Y/N: Dad, I love you, but I don't wanna talk about it. I just wanna be alone.

Dad nods.

Henry: I understand. I love you too, son.

I nod before going up to my room.

(Two days later)

For the past two days I've just been going about my normal stuff.

Just like I did before becoming Spider-Man.

I walk out of the bathroom and go back to class.

???: Hey, Y/N.

I look over to Mia.

Y/N: Hey, Mia. What are you doing out of class?

Mia: Just helping set up for the dance next week.

Y/N: Oh, yeah. I forgot about the dance. You going with anyone?

Mia: No. I've spent some time helping set up for it, I hadn't thought that far ahead. What about you?

Y/N: Uh, no. I'm not going with anyone.

I step forward.

Y/N: Do you maybe wanna go with me?

She smiles.

Mia: Yeah, I'd like that.

Y/N: Cool, cool. And do you maybe wanna go out on a date with me tomorrow night.

She nods.

Mia: Definitely.

I smile.

Y/N: Okay, great. Well, I'll see you later.

Mia: Alright, bye.

Y/N: Bye.

I walk back to class.

(Three hours later)

I'm now walking home and as I walk down the street I hear police sirens.

I turn back see cop cars chasing a speeding car down the streets.

Y/N: Crap. I better...

I touch my chest and realise I don't have my suit anymore.

Even though I'm not Spider-Man I still have the instinct to help people.

I sigh.

Y/N: I need to talk to someone about this.

I pull out my phone and call my mentor.

Y/N: Hey. I need some advice. Can we talk?

(Two hours later)

I'm now on a rooftop in the city to meet with Mr. Stark.

And I've just told him about what I've been feeling.

He turns to me.

Tony: Okay, so why come to me? What are you trying to say, Y/N? I thought you were done.

I sigh.

Y/N: Ever since I could remember I've wanted to help people. But the first time I do it alone, I screw it up. People got hurt, they nearly died.

He nods.

Tony: I know. I get what you're feeling, I've been there.

I shake my head.

Y/N: What if I'm no hero? What if I'm just some kid who got bit by a spider?

Tony: I don't think that spider just bit you, Y/N. I think it chose you.

Y/N: I'm not like you, Tony. I'm just some kid who has no idea what he's doing.

Tony: Maybe. But you can be better than us. You can inspire people, give people hope, in a way that I never could. Watching over your city like a guardian angel, making a difference. Saving people.

He steps away.

Tony: When you're ready, you get back out there. Save lives and stop the Vulture.

Mr. Stark activates his helmet before flying away in his suit.

I smile.

Y/N: Cool.

After that I head back home.

Vulture can wait, I've got a date to get ready for.

(The next day)

So, for the rest of the day I've been getting ready for my date with Mia.

Dad has driven me to Mia's house as her dad is driving us to the restaurant.

He pulls up outside the house.

Henry: You ready for this, son?

Y/N: Yeah.

Henry: Okay, let's going over things one more time.

Y/N: Right. Pay the bill, open the door for her and be a gentleman.

He smiles.

Henry: That's right. I used to do it with your mother on dates. Trust me, it works. It works every time.

I smile.

Y/N: Yeah. Mum did always tell me that you were the romantic type.

He smiles.

Henry: Well, I do my best.

Y/N: I'm gonna go.

Henry: Good luck. And have fun.

Y/N: Thanks, dad.

I get out of the car and go up to the front door.

I knock on it and a moment later it opens.

I see the man I saw on the ferry.

???: Hi there. You must be Y/N. I'm Adrian.

I recognise his voice too.

Oh, shit. Mia's dad is the Vulture.
