THE SPAWNS
The Two of Us
Chapter XXVI—Cole

One of the funniest things I found in life was when Jayden Eaton was pissed off, and right now, it was pretty darn hilarious.
Pick-Up-Line Night was going as well as Pick-Up-Line Night could be going. A little too well actually. Absolutely nobody had gotten turned down, that's how sad it was. As a matter of fact, Maika was now surrounded by four guys trying to win her over. Hence, a Jayden sitting at a booth, sulking and glaring.
The devil's spawn, also known as my cousin was nowhere to be seen. I figured she was committing a crime somewhere. If she could get caught it would make my fugging year to call my mum to tell her she had to bail out the delinquent. Anyway, now Jayden had no one to throw more misguided sexual tension towards so that was why he was glaring at one of his best friends.
I wasn't sure if I should say something or let him figure this out for himself. Ever since Maika and I had our little conversation I couldn't help notice so many little details about her relationship with Jay. I really had no idea how Blake Eaton's son could be this fugging clueless. His dad could smell when we'd switch the kind of spray paint we'd use for our graffiti.
Maybe it was a good thing Beth and I weren't going to happen any time soon. I wouldn't want him as my father-in-law.
I stopped thinking about Beth because that was just somewhere I did not want to go.
Instead I focused on our two other friends.
Clyde and Frank had a lot of fun trying pick up lines but now they were trying something they called their Olsen Switcehroo trick, which consisted for one of them to start speaking to a girl, then after a little while, switch with the other without the girl realising it and doing this over and over again until they got caught.
This was the twelfth time they were switching. I was counting. I didn't have much else to do besides making fun of Jayden sulking.
Just before I could make a comment to piss Jayden off a little bit more a girl walked up to our table. I remembered this girl from earlier. She had laughed when I had asked her if she worked at UPS because I could have sworn she checked out my package.
She stopped right in front of me from across the table and smiled at me nervously. Jayden kept shoving me with his elbow and kicking me under the table probably thinking what the hell dude. "Hey, huh, we talked earlier. I was just wondering if maybe you wanted to come with me to this other bar. It's like right beside my apartment. It's pretty nice."
Fuuuuuuug. I didn't want to be a prick and I was sure the girl was nice enough. The thing was, all my life I'd live with this whole misconception that the only love worth pursuing was the one that hit you in the face like a shovel. Trying out a pick up line on her earlier hadn't come anywhere near feeling like I had a concussion. And maybe I could talk with her and I could develop feelings and that was the way most relationships worked out. Feelings developed. Love at first sight was fickle. But too many things in life were insignificant and common. I just didn't feel like love should be one of them. Love should be wild and crazy and extraordinary and magical, and it just wasn't there with this particular girl.
I was going to die alone.
I had to let her down. If I hadn't been drinking a little too much, I probably wouldn't have said what followed... who was I kidding, no alcohol was needed here. "Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to lead you on." I tried to look as sad and apologetic as I could. "I just wanted to try anything to stop all this sexual tension I have with my best friend." I grabbed Jayden by the neck for emphasis.
Trust my best friend to play the game. He grabbed my face, squishing my chin and cheeks in his hand. It was damn uncomfortable. "You know you and I can't work, you can't get hard," he said, sort of hysterically.
I grabbed his face too and squeezed. "It's okay Boo, I'll be bottom and we'll use toys."
Jayden acted like he was about to cry. "Are you suuure?"
"Oh yes, come here Boo," and then I let go of his face and went for a hug lifting my leg over the table trying to wrap it around him.
At that point the girl had just backed away slowly, probably completely freaked out.
Oops.
"You guys are freaking pathetic," Clyde, coming back to our table.
"I thought we were here to get dates, not for you two to get it on," his brother added.
"Let them," Clyde continued and let himself fall on a chair. "They ought to actually fuck. I can't keep on living with all this sexual tension."
Jay and I laughed but then I had to asked, "You got caught?"
"Naw," Frank shrugged, sitting too. "I just thought it was wiser to stop this before we started to name our babies."
"Yeah, we're not sharing a girlfriend again. That was way too much work," the other twin added, rolling his eyes.
Maika had picked this perfect time to join us. Her groupies had been left behind. "You guys shared a girlfriend?" she asked, sitting down too. She grabbed Jay's bottle of water and blew him a kiss when he glared at her.
"Yeah," the twins answered simultaneously.
"So, why won't you have a threesome with me?" she asked, like this was the logical next step.
"Oh, she never knew we were twins. She never even knew she had two boyfriends." Frank explained, grinning like a lunatic. Clyde was making the same face. It was fugging scary.
"Jay, Cole, you have fucked up friends," Maika said, shaking her head, narrowing her eyes at the boys.
Yeah, I figured that out a while back...
"Evil genius you mean," Clyde said and then made a perfect Dr Evil laugh, with the pinkie and everything.
"That was the longest eight months of my life," Frank complained.
Maika slapped her hands on the table. It wasn't news for Jay and I so we just shrugged at her when she stared at us incredulous. "Wait? That lasted for eight months?"
"Yep."
She leaned back in her chair. I couldn't help chuckling. She added, "Holy shit. Wow. Okay," in a daze. I couldn't blame her. It was pretty fugging messed up. "I seriously feel out of the loop tonight, with that bomb and the whole me not having a fake ID when you all do. I feel like a virgin among porn stars at the Playboy mansion."
Going to see Clyde and Frank was partly to enjoy their deranged train of thoughts and partly to score Maika fake IDs. They'd already given me and Jayden ours. Everyone turned to them back in college for IDs. I never asked how that whole business worked. I was a little worried to ask actually.
"Don't worry, we'll be gentle," Clyde teased, putting his hand on top of hers.
"Alright, should we wrap it up for the night? The bar's about to close?" Jayden asked. I kept my laugh under check. Sure, we had to leave because the bar was closing not because Clyde was getting friendly with his guuuurlfriiiiend.
Nevertheless, we all agreed that it was getting late and we should grab a bite before wrapping the night up. Now the problem was finding that fugging cousin of mine.
We looked all around the bar for her but finally found her outside, talking with a group of people smoking.
"We're going to the fast food joint across the street. You coming?" Clyde asked her. He wasn't completely fed up with her yet, so more inclined to deal with her.
"Sure, whatever." She looked bored with us. "It's nice to see you guys were so worried about me. What if I'd been murdered behind a dumpster?" Dakota said, catching up with us.
Maika sighed, looking sideways at her. "When I asked you were you were going you just said very un-nice things about my mother... which technically is sort of useless because I don't have a mom."
Dakota snorted. "Of course you have a mom. Everyone has a mom. Yours just abandoned you."
Everyone stopped walking. "Woah, that's a little uncalled for," Jay automatically said before anyone could answer. Maika was deadly still.
"It's the truth though isn't it?" Dakota pushed. "My parents told me the little story, how your parents abandoned you by a pond so you'd drown and Cole found you and even his parents didn't want you so they dumped you to their gay best friends."
Maika walked right up to Dakota, looking her directly in the eyes. Maybe I'd have to break up a girl fight tonight. Or not. I didn't have to. "That getting murdered thing behind a dumpster, do you want to make it into some kind of premonition?" Mai said really calmly. Scaaaaaaaary.
"Yeah, huh, you should apologize," Jay pressed. The twins were slowly backing away. Safe move.
"Who cares, it's the truth," the red headed devil pushed. Maika had turned around and headed the other way.
"Fug off," I told Dakota. That was the last of it for tonight. "I mean it, go take a walk and come back in the next century."
My cousin walked up to me this time. Was I going to fight tonight? "Oh yeah, sure, that's fine, discarding me, that's a new one."
"Come on guys, let's settle down," Jay said, coming in between us, trying to keep the peace. "Look, go talk with Mai. I'll deal with Dakota," he told me, holding me back a little.
I stared straight in his eyes. "I hope your way of dealing with Dakota doesn't include tongue footsies."
"Come on, just go," he pushed me towards our friend and pressed his hand against the devil's spawn's back, going the other way.
I caught up with Maika and the twins decided to follow us. The fast food plan went up in smokes. We weren't even talking. I could almost hear Mai's teeth grinding together. I called a cab and the four of us crammed into it and went back to the shady motel we were staying at for the night. We had gotten two rooms because Dakota apparently didn't want to share it with four guys. That made total sense, I mean, I wasn't going to force her to be the meat in a Clyde and Frank sandwich, but right now I didn't like the odds of us being only three guys in this room tonight. I was all for Jayden popping his cherry, just not anywhere near my cousin. I understood the fact that we couldn't exactly abandon Dakota in the middle of a random town, but at the same time it would have been nice for him to follow his friends.
And who was I kidding, I kind of wanted Dakota to be kidnapped and have her organs harvested at the moment.
The cab left us by the curb in front of our motel. Clyde and Frank went straight to our room but Mai and I took our time.
I wasn't sure what I was supposed to say, what I had the right to say. We barely ever talked about this, about her adoption and about me finding her. Sometimes I could kind of remember it, like a dream that's slowly slipping from your memories grasp, one that you can still feel lingering somewhere in your subconscious.
Maika talked before I could. "We can kill her, just the two of us I mean. Jay always said he'd help me burry a body if I killed someone, but we'd be able to just take care of it, the two of us," Maika trailed, staring at the ground, kicking pebbles.
I held her arm gently, turning her to face me. "Hey, it started out as just the two of us. It's fine if it stays that way." I leaned my head down a little to make eye contact. "Sorry, I know we don't talk about this."
My favourite Asian shrugged. "It's okay. It's the truth after all."
"And you know my parents didn't dump you to your dads right?" I pressed.
She sighed. "I know, dad's father is an ambassador so he was able to pull string and speed up the adoption process. I know all of that."
"And you know your dads are a lot better at parenting than my parents. You won the parent contest no doubt." That was a hundred percent true. Her dads might be a little overprotective, but they were always parents. Mine rarely were.
"I love my dads, I might bitch and moan but I wouldn't trade them for the world. I don't care about the bios and that they dumped me... it just..." she ran her hand through her hair, sighing again.
"It hurts," I said for her.
She made a little grimace. "Yeah."
I gave her arm a little reassuring squeeze. "That's normal."
"I know. It just sucks that the red headed bitch knows it," Maika said, and raised her eyes towards the dark sky.
"I know it sucks but don't let it phase you. She's obviously unhappy about a lot of things and taking it out on you. You're better than this."
"Thanks," she smiled weakly.
We left it at that. What more was there to say unless we really started to plan on to get rid of my cousin.
We walked into the room together. One of the twins was in bed and the other was getting out of the bathroom. With the crappy lighting and the fact that they had changed clothes I couldn't tell which was which.
"The chick is sleeping in our room?" the one getting out of the bathroom asked, like this was a great affront.
I rolled my eyes. "Yes, the chick is sleeping in your room."
"I thought it was girls room and boys room," he added, shaking his wet hair.
"I'm not sleeping with Cruella de Vil," Maika informed him and grabbed one of Jay's shirts from his bag.
"I was actually going to wank over than mental picture," the twin in bed told her, grinning. Clyde, obviously.
Maika narrowed her eyes at him heading for the bathroom. "Wow, so classy, please dial it down, otherwise I'll have to have my wicked way with you right here, right now."
He patted the space beside him in bed. "Don't mind me."
"Again Cole, fucked up friends," she told me shaking her head and closed the bathroom door behind her.
"Thanks," I answered.
I went to my own bag and switch my jeans with my sweatpants, dropping my shirt off too.
"You two are sleeping together?" Frank asked.
I shrugged. "We always sleep together." It was probably weird for outsiders, all things considered.
"And what about Jay?" he added. I sat in bed, rearranging the covers in a more efficient way, not all tucked under the mattress like some kind of straitjacket.
Maika answered for me when she got out of the bathroom with only Jay's shirt on. "There will be plenty of room when he gets here."
"You relationship is kind of unheathly. You're like a weird three organism symbiosis," Frank added. Clyde was just staring at her and drooling a little.
"You're just jealous it's not your erection against my ass that's going to wake me up tomorrow," she answered and sat beside me in bed. I closed my eyes and laughed silently.
"Seriously Cole, how are your balls not permanently blue," Clyde asked.
"Careful, that's my sister you're talking about." I smiled at her and she smiled back. "Now go to sleep you pervs."
We closed the light and stayed silent for the most part, except to scream at Clyde for farting loudly every ten minutes.
I fell asleep with my pinkie hooked to Maika's, the way we used to sleep when we were kids, the only way she would sleep after finding her.
