I Promise I'll Be Gentle
Chapter XXV—Jayden

I never truly understood the expression "cutting through tension with a knife" before sitting in a car with Cole, Maika and Dakota. Maybe cutting the tension with a knife wasn't the right way to express what was going on though. It kind of felt like when Grandpa Eaton would grab me by the shoulder and keep me down on me seat explaining to me the fluidity of changing meters in Francis Poulenc's Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra whenever Cole and I would break something in his house. The weight of the tension was as pressing as Grandpa Eaton's grip.
"No one here likes you go away, get a clue, go back to your fucking zoo I want to burn as you do," Maika sang very loudly in the back seat. Dakota was sitting beside me in the passenger seat and Maika and Cole were sitting behind.
"Huh, Maika, could you maybe, change your tune," I asked, trying to be as soft spoken as I could, given the circumstances.
"I don't know," Maika replied sweetly. "Could you maybe be more supportive of my artistic drive instead?"
"I'm feeling a lot of tension..." I trailed, and coughed a little.
"I don't know what you're talking about. Oh, hey Cole, I've got an amazing idea to pass the time while we're driving," Maika said, and my hands clenched a little around the steering wheel, while giving sideway glances at Dakota.
She looked completely unfazed, pushing the cuticles of her nails.
"What have you got in mind Tiger?" Cole replied.
"Wanna make out?"
I jerked the car to a stop and parked by the side of the road. "Okay, seriously, can we just all act normal please?" I asked my two friends in the back.
Maika grinned at me. "How is me making out with Cole not normal? I'm actually thinking about making it something more permanent."
Cole didn't look like he was going to argue. What the actual fuck? What was wrong with those two? Were they freaking serious?
"Please, you're just saying this to get on Jayden's nerve, you two aren't attracted to each other," Dakota interjected beside me. Yes. Thank you.
"Oh yes, because you're the expert on what I want," Cole snorted.
"Can we just all not argue and get along please?" I asked again.
"Look, I just want to bitch to acknowledge something," Maika said, and a flinched while she glared at Dakota. "We had no reason to bring you along. Sure, Cole's mom said we had to you bring along if we wanted to go for a road trip, but technically, we really didn't need her approval. We could have left on our own, we're all adults here. We just humoured her because we feel bad for her sometimes. So there, we could have just left without the red-head she-devil. But we still brought you along. So there's absolutely no room for your sabotage, your snubbing, your menaces and your condescension. Really anything that could get on my nerve has no place in this car otherwise I'll drop your ass on the curb faster than Cole's parents can get undress."
"And if you were unaware, that's not a lot of time," Cole pointed out.
"Jesus, guys, chill, will ya?" I groaned.
"Fine," Dakota answered.
"Perfect, you can drive on Jayden, Cole and I will just start making out now," Maika said, smiling that sweet smile again.
I glared at her. What was her problem? "You two aren't making out."
She shrugged. "Why not?"
"Because there is no PDA allowed in this car. Or on this road trip really," I warned.
"You understand what you just said right?" Cole chuckled.
Oh... damn. Yeah. Whatever. Maika was annoying me. Why would she suddenly want to make out with Cole? Why was she even joking about that? Did she think it would annoy Dakota? Because it was mostly just annoying me.
"Just, please, don't distract me while I'm driving," I mumbled.
"Sure thing, Eaton Boy," Maika replied and gave me a salute.
I rolled my eyes and started to drive again.
After leaving Cole's house, we had texted our twin friends, Clyde and Francis. They were a bad influence during school time, but during vacation time, they were the perfect partners in crimes.
We were meeting them at their house which was a three hours drive away.
As I kept driving I really hoped that things could become less tense. We were supposed to be having fun right now and to change Cole's mind over whatever was bothering him. We weren't supposed to be on the verge of arguing all the time. Generally my friends were always welcoming and kind with new people. I didn't get why they were so hell bent on shunning Dakota out. So what if she was a criminal. We were criminals too, we'd just never gotten caught.
Three agonizing hours later, I was finally parking in Francis and Clyde's driveway.
I didn't even have time to get out of the car and Clyde was out—I knew it was Clyde because only Clyde was enough of an unashamed moron to do this—singing "When I'm feeling blue, all I have to do is take a look at you, then I'm not so blue. When you're close to me, I can feel your heart beat I can hear you breathing near my ear. Wouldn't you agree, baby you and me got a groovy kind of love" while doing David Bowie and Mick Jagger's Dancing In The Street video clip worthy dance moves.
"Francis, please, control your brother," I yelled to his brother while we all got out of the car, stretching our legs. Cole was just laughing and singing along.
"It's better to just let him sing it out," Francis pointed out, heading my way. "You should know this by now. Stop him and he'll just try to sing it, again and again and again and... hellooooo" his train of speech completely shifted when he got a look at Maika. "Clyde, CLYDE! Stop singing, come here, this is serious, SERIOUS business," the twin yelled to his brother.
My eyes narrowed. I didn't like where this was going.
Clyde stopped singing and came up to us. "My, oh my, Jayden, Cole, who is this Asian goddess you brought along with you?"
"Clyde, Francis, we've mentioned her many times before. This is Maika, our best friend," I reminded them, through clenched teeth. Cole was just laughing behind, and Dakota was leaning against the car, ignoring all of us.
Clyde just stared at Maika, appraising her, and I had to muster a lot of strength to keep from punching him. "Dude, when you said your best friend was Asian I thought you meant like only does math and plays online games, not stars in a porno," he said, his eyes fixed on Mai's boobs.
I sighed heavily while Maika just grinned proudly. "Jesus Christ, Clyde..."
"Have you tapped that? I mean, how the fuck can you not have fucked her? My balls are twitching here and we've just met." Seriously? He was saying this right in front of her? How did I pick my friends?
"And you ain't seen nothing Clyde," Maika told him in a sultry voice, before I could do or say anything. "The stuff I can do with my mouth will have you speak in Mandarin."
Clyde grabbed my arm shaking it, never taking his eyes from Mai. "Jayden, I'm formally asking permission to fuck your best friend. I promise I'll be gentle."
I slapped his hand away. "Absolutely out of the question." What was wrong with everyone today? Ugh. Seriously.
"Shut up," Maika barked at me. "He's not the boss of me. Unfortunately, I'll only accept your offer if your brother is in on the deal. I've always wanted to have sex with twins."
No, just no. No, no, no.
Clyde grimaced. "Is that your final answer?"
"Yep." She grinned at him.
"Damn," Clyde replied, looking down.
I was mentally pumping my fist. Take that, moron.
"Let's move on from this crude rejection, Twinsie," Francis said and then asked, "So, what are the plans? You didn't come here just to flaunt your hot Asian friend have her turns us down right?"
"We've decided to go on an impromptu road trip and you've been invited along for the ride," Cole answered.
"Oooh, sweet," Clyde answered sarcastically. "We feel so special. Are we all going to get matching t-shirts?"
"No," I told him with a satisfied grin.
"Then, no thanks," Clyde replied, smirking.
"Shut up, Clyde," his brother answered, rolling his eyes. "So any particular plans?"
"Well, while we're out doing stupid things, we figured that we might as while continue one of our fathers' traditions," I informed them. Our old men had good ideas, we had to give them that much.
"You mean that you'll finally bring us along to one of your act of vandalism?" Clyde asked gleefully.
It was my time to roll my eyes. The twins had been begging to be brought along when we did graffitis, but that was a strictly Cole-Maika-Lilibeth-and-I business. "No, not that tradition."
"Which one then?"
"Pick up line night!" Cole all but squealed.
Clyde frowned, confused. "Pick up line night?"
"Yeah, it's pretty much us going to a bar and trying on as many pick-up line as we can, and since you two are twins I'm confident this night is about to become legendary," I explained. My father and Cole's father used to go out and do that. They never actually tried to pick up girls, they just liked to try out as many ridiculous pick-up lines as they could.
"But, huh," Clyde cleared his throat and fidgeted, "what about the lovely ladies with us?"
My gaze went over to Dakota but she wasn't listening to our conversation, she was texting. I felt a little bad for her.
"Are you implying I can't pick up men?" Maika asked, looking offended.
I tried to keep my chuckle in check but epically failed.
"Oh, no, not at all, I'm actually pretty confident you'll have a hundred percent success rate, sweetheart," Clyde replied smoothly, winking at her.
This time I had to keep my gag in check. "Don't call her sweetheart," I warned.
"Yes, call me Major Boner," she replied with two thumbs up and a goofy grin.
I slapped my forehead. "Jesus Christ, Mai," I whined.
"Ooooooh, yes, talk dirty to me Vay-Jay-Jay," Maika crooned.
My eyes opened wide and I pointed at her, "AH! You did not just call me that, we have a strict rule about that nickname, come here you traitor."
And just like that, Maika was running away laughing and I was chasing her. That traitor was going to get it. The second I could catch her. And I was going to catch her.
