THE SPAWNS

Chapter V—Cole

Let’s Talk About My Unrequited Love

© DarknessAndLight

There was something deeply degrading when someone my age had to sit in the backseat of the car with my parents driving. Especially since I was too tall to fit in the back of the fugging Audi TT who frankly was not build to have people sitting there and I was going to give myself serious neck cramps later with the angle I had to keep it in.

But at least my parents weren’t having sex and we were driving to the Eaton’s house.

Finally! Let’s all chant together Halleluiah! Yes, you too creepy hobo even if I don’t understand what you’re doing in my brain, you too, filthy hooker that keeps crying and begging for change so you can call your pimp…

“Are you humming Halleluiah, Cole,” Dad asked in front, trying to contain his laughter.

My eyes stayed on the landscape outside. “Yep. Though the hobo isn’t on cue and I have a hard time hearing the choral of lifeguards because the stinking hooker keeps weeping.”

Mum made a tsking sound. “Maybe I shouldn’t have taken crack during my pregnancy…”

I rolled my eyes... If only… Maybe if I was a crack baby I wouldn’t realize I was messed up. “It has nothing to do with drugs Mum. I ruled it out on all the poking on my head I got that damaged crucial brain cells during my development.” I crossed my arms over my chest overly proud of that one.

In your face! Or well technically it had been on my forehead… gross.

“Our sex life aside, why are you singing Halleluiah,” Dad pressed again.

I snorted. “Because you ruined Toccata and Fugue in D Minor for me.”

After that remarked I pretty much lost my parents, and by losing them I mean they were laughing and giving each other googly sickening stares. My parents act like fugging hormonal teenagers.

Luckily the drive from our building to the Eaton’s house was very short, and soon enough we were parking in their driveway. Maika’s fathers’ car was already parked there.

Aunty Lexi was the one to open the door when we arrived and she smiled broadly when she saw me, automatically giving me a warm hug.

“I’m so happy to see you,” she kept grinning.

“Me too,” I smiled too. Now that was the kind of welcoming I should have had when I had gotten home. “Can I switch parents?”

Aunty Lexi roared with laugher. “I don’t think it works that way,” she answered, shaking her head at my parents. She probably knew why I wanted that.

Mum pinched my cheek very tightly “Be a good boy Cole. At least your parents love each other.”

“A little too much though,” I groaned and slapped her hand off.

And as always, my parents just laughed it off. Were your parents that way too, creepy hobo? Creepy hoooobooo? I’m talking to you! Stupid hobo. And hooker, if you don’t want me to mentally bitch-slap you, stop crying already!

Everyone headed for the kitchen, Uncle Alex and Uncle Travis already there, sitting at the counter in the center of the room.

“Where are the people my age,” I inquired, taking a mini pizza from the plate.

Blake wasn’t there, he was gone, I knew it because his car hadn’t been in the driveway and he wasn’t here either. So that meant he was out. He had drove Beth to dance practice, I was sure of it. We were Friday and that was one of her classes’ night. Now, as much as that sucked, at least I would see her soon.

This was my mantra to keep me from being hysterical; I will see her soon, I will see her soon, I will see her soon…

“In Jay’s room,” Lexi smiled at me, and I thanked her, before rolling my eyes at my parents—Mum had sat on Dad’s lap when he had settled on a stool—and made my way upstairs, a handful of mini pizzas in stock.

I took the stairs two by two and walked in the corridor shoving the five mini pizzas in my mouth—first door on the left was the guestroom, second… Beth’s room, and finally the third was Jay’s room.

I pushed the door opened and automatically raised my arms in disbelief, whining, taking in the scene before me. “Well this got to be my lucky day, two in fugging two,” I mumbled my mouth full.

Jayden and Maika’s head raised in surprise, both lying comfortable in Jay’s bed.

I rolled my eyes but when I finally finished chewing, smiled at them. “Jeez Jay, put a shirt on will you?”

Maika smiled, her nose wrinkling a bit. “Always the party pooper!”

            I laughed. “Come here Tiger!”

Mai crawled off the bed and ran to me, jumping in my arms. And because this was Maika and she was… well Maika, she basically wrapped her legs around me and planted a kiss, smack on my lips.

“What was that for,” I laughed uncontrollably while she placed her feet back on the ground. Jayden was groaning in disapproval behind her.

She wiggled her eyebrows. “You’re looking good today.”

I looked down at myself. Old fated jeans with paint stains on them and a few holes, an old dark gray t-shirt with a dark blue plaid shirt over it, unbuttoned, with the sleeves rolled a little up the middle of my forearm and I’m pretty sure my hair was sticking up and in a mess. I controlled the urge to roll my eyes. Sure, let’s roll with that answer.

I laughed again and looked behind her at my brother from another mother. “She liiiikes me better Jay! Ha HA!” I grinned evilly, pointing at him.

“It was just a pity kiss because you look like hell,” Jayden smirked back.

I snorted, but let the comment pass and went to sit on the bed while Maika got back to her spot. “So? What did I miss?”

Mai leaned her back against the headboard, and Jay sat too. “Nothing,” she shrugged and then smiled mischievously. “We were just talking about that time Jay got raped.”

I burst laughing and Jay leaned his head back whining. “Ah, Miss Sweaty Lazy Hands,” I nodded in understanding.

I knew exactly what she was talking about. It’s not every day your best friend comes back from a date, a male best friend at that and throws himself on your bed while announcing that he just got raped. Of course there’s nothing funny about rape, but Jay is just so stupid when it comes to those things that you can’t help but find it just a tiny bit amusing.

“Wow,” Maika snorted. “I so did not need that info. Was it—”

Jay interrupted her, pushing her head. “You guys are aware that there is nothing funny about this and if you talk about it again I’ll be more than happy to bring to the table during dinner that time you period on my cover Maika and Cole, two words; your initiation.”

My eyes widened. “Alright, I think we’re good?” I looked at Maika who wore the same shocked expression as mine. “You?”

            “Yep, all good!” She nodded.

“Thaaaaank you!” Jay grinned in victory.

“Well this definitely puts a bum to our discussion…” Mai complained, while I went to sit beside her, leaning on the headboard too. “Want to talk about your love life Cole?”

I shook my head looking at the ceiling. Sure, let’s talk about my unrequited love for Lilibeth with Jay just beside. “I think I’ll pass, thank you.”

“Yes, because you don’t have one because you two know next to nothing about relationships.” Maika grinned. “If it wasn’t for me you wouldn’t even know anything about girls.”

            Jay huffed in annoyance. “Please!”

“Oh?” She gave him a pointy look, probably raising her eyebrows but I couldn’t really clearly see since she was looking the other way at Jay. “Do I need to remind you that I’m the one that told you how girls worked down there, now that Jay was one of the conversations that is in the top fifty for awkwardness.”

I laughed at the memory. “I’d like to mention that I never asked for information on that subject.”

Maika turned to me and gave me a soft flick on the forehead. “You still listened.”

I poked her ribs. “I’m a boy, what were you expecting?”

The three of us laughed then.

I had missed this. I had missed the three of us spending time together. The ache I felt from not seeing Beth wasn’t enough to hide the fact that my best friends were as important as her, if not more. I could deal with Beth not liking me and not being with me, as long as she was happy, that’s all that mattered. But I could never survive without the two cuckoos beside me. Sometimes they were the only thing that kept me sane—er well as sane as it was possible for a disturbed Cole.

Jay’s door opened though before we could talk more. “Well don’t you three look cozy,” Jay’s mother smiled but then she narrowed her eyes at her son. “Jayden, put a shirt on will you?” Ha! Hadn’t I asked that? Come on creepy hobo, help me out, I had right? “Dinner’s almost ready so get your butts downstairs.”

“Yes Mom,” we all answered in unison making her laugh and we got up, following closely after her.

When I reached the last step of the stairs I heard the front door open. My heart started to beat faster.

I turned to look in the hall towards the door.

And there she was. Beth. Finally. She didn’t see me right away; she was looking down at her feet, taking her shoes off so I had a good ten seconds of taking her in.

She was wearing her black leotard with a pale pink cotton skirt, the kind that you sort of had to roll around yourselves because it was just a rectangular piece of fabric and a loose light gray top that fell off her shoulder a bit. Her hair was tied into a bun, but her fringe covered her forehead and a few strands in the back curled lightly against her neck. Her cheeks had a pink shade probably from all the dancing and they were covered with freckles. She seemed to have lost weight her face was somehow leaner… maybe that was just her growing up though. Because she had grown a bit, maybe one, one and a half inch, and her hips were just a tiny bit rounder.

I sighed in contentment, letting out the breath I had been holding.

I fought hard against my face to not grin broadly when I saw what she was wearing around her right wrist. The bracelet I had made her, two years ago.

And then she raised her dark blue eyes and they rested in me, at first widening a little in surprise, her cheek getting even pinker. For two seconds, her gaze was on me and she was all mine…

The choices for the title fo the next chapter, which will be in Lilibeth's POV are :

A) The Concept of Prince Charming

B) The Way He Was Looking at Me

C) A Gloomy Moon

D) Another Girl

On another note, I'm slowly starting to edit "I Sold...". The way it works is I go through it (it's brutal. To be honest, I'm kind of shocked some of you think that was awesome 0_0) and then I print it and È looks at it again, because she likes doing it on paper better, and then I do the modifications I need from there, AND afterwards I'll be sending it to a few other people to check it again sooooooooo, that's why it's taking time! lol

Anyway, I think that's all I needed to tell you guys. Thanks again for the awesome support, you guys rock. I don't always thank you all personally but do know that I love each and every comments and that they make me want to write faster! :D
