Chapter 20

The base was... gone. Demolished, destroyed, Annihilated. Just... gone. All that was left was burning fire and bodies, with the exception of Will swearing. I walk around the ruins of my home. My new home anyways, I had learned too love this place.

"Wait," Terry yells out. "You're still injured." Terry heals everybody quickly, my back feels warm at his touch. "Lets search the base, anything could be here." We mumble agreement and spread out.

The walls had been knocked down, the entire base was now a giant room. Bigger then the one holding the stone we were just at. Far above the room is illuminated by the firelight, I can hear the cars go across the road, not knowing how far down a drop it would be if it caved in.

I see a man I had met a few weeks ago, he was an apprentice healer to Terry. He had no head. I ignore his body, burned and scared beyond recognition. I only new it was him from his birth mark on his arm that was nearly burned away itself.

Tunnels going too places far away peeked out of the walls. Kind of like a giant bees nest, honey combed walls everywhere. The place smells of death, I smell the burning bodies and ash of the broken walls. I look for anything, anything that did not involve death. I find something.

Raised on a small mount, obviously earth magic work; a stool sat a top. Just a normal stool you would sit on without thinking. I walk up to it cautiously. On top of it is a letter. There is no address stamp or anything except the name to and from.

   To Liam Peak.

                       From Arnold.

My heart freezes. It feels like someone is squeezing my neck. I look around, no one is near me or looking. I grab the note and shove it in my pocket, as best as I can without crumpling it. I kick the stool into a blaze of fire. And quickly pretend too look somewhere else. Minutes pass and nothing else is found, eventually Terry calls us in.

"Ok, nothing else is here, that much is obvious." He sighs. "But, Rolly designed a safe house on a far side of the Sanctuary." He clears his throat, "It's fire proof and pretty much everything proof! He wanted it to be a last resort. I would think they would be fine but with Arnold around, I'm not sure."

He stumbles around and walks towards what looked like a smaller passage way, one I haven't went too before for sure. I walk past many charred bodies and burnt down lab equipment. Many of the dead weren't ours, that meant that we at least put up a good fight.

I follow Terry through the ash, we had to take a detour because a fire was too strong to get through. Finally after ten minutes we reach the passage. There were no more lights so Frederick lights his palm on fire. The fire lit up a portion of the hallway and we continue.

There was no bodies, burnt walls, fire or anything. We enter far enough to go out of view of the exit. Forward there was darkness, backwards was darkness as well. It was almost like it was trying too trap them. It took them five more minutes to find their first body. It was nobody I could recognize, his body was charred beyond all recognition. But Terry gave a cry of surprise. I study the body more intently, it was one of Banes body guards. There was an obvious struggle.

The walls were black, a part of the roof was pulled in by an earth elemental. I walk over too the rocks that fell in from the roof. I dig through with my mind, pulling away the rocks with speed. Sure enough, underneath was another body. It wasn't burned like the other, but I wish it had been. It was Banes second body guard.

"How many body guards did Bane have?" I hesitantly ask.

"Five, why?" Terry slowly chooses his words.

"I found a second."

Terry gasps, "Hurry, we need to get there quickly, it's not far."

We start at a jog, we pass more bodies along the way. It just got more gruesome the farther we went. One man was missing a head. The next guy had been ripped apart. Another guy had his throat torn open.

"Some of the people weren't killed by humans," Terry remarked.

"Like what?" I ask panting.

"Like that?" Will whispers.

Up ahead is what looks like a large wolf. It had long fangs and was about the same size. It was pretty much a wolf with a small mouth and long fangs with eight eyes. Small legs but built with muscle and had sharp claws like knives.

'Oh my god..." I hear Frederick mutter.

"What is it?" I ask.

Terry clears his throat, unable too hide how scared he was. "It's a Fangbow, beasts from the Yopolist dimension, they can suck out your soul and devour your entire being. Almost impossible to kill, I'm surprised we even killed one! If they suck out your soul it grows stronger, they can get as big as a bus! It doesn't grow that fast though, too become that big it would need too suck at least a thousand souls. The world would be already doomed if sunlight didn't hurt them!"

"Sunlight does what?"

"The Yopolist dimension is in forever darkness, it never turns too day and doesn't have a moon or stars. It's the most dangerous dimension for that main reason, you can't see what's coming! A flashlight will eventually run out of batteries and a torch will grab the attention of beasts like this." He pauses, "Sunlight would burn them, after living in darkness for so long, they developed night vision in the Yopolist dimension and in sunlight their eyes would burn instantly. With they're body as well."

I gulp. With an unmade decision they moved on, five minutes later Terry breaks the silence. "We're here," Terry says quietly.

I see nothing but the hallway. Terry raises a hand too the wall where a mural was, it showed the picture of a sun. He made the sun glow and a wall opened up. Another passage led too darkness. I can make out a room about five meters in.

We walk in. The secret room had failed, miserably. The ground was littered with bodies. Blood had made a pool two inches deep. People were everywhere but every one was the same. Dead. Terry flicks a light switch and I can see the massacre with more details. There was no sign of magic on the bodies, but the walls were covered with burn marks or had been ripped of they're paint from large gusts of wind.

Most of the bodies had scratches all over them, blood gushing from many wounds. Some had bite marks, and had deep injuries as if the enemy had been eating them. I lean down over a body I recognized as another one of the apprentices Bane had. He had scratches across his chest, some inch deep. His neck had bite marks on it and his arm had been ripped off. His eyes were the worst part, they had lost they're iris.

They were blank eyes. Nothing but white, only the slightest gray circle remained of his eye. I stand up, I notice Terry leaning over a body as well, inspecting the mans eye.

"This is the work of a Fangbow. These guys with faded irises? That's when they're soul is sucked out. The ones who have their soul died before the Fangbow could steal theirs." Frederick explained.

"Where is Rolly? Bane? What about his body guards, plus I thought this was a secret how did they get in!" Will complained.

"This isn't the secret hide out." Replied Terry, walking towards another sun on another wall.

"Oh, but how did they find this first one?" Will complained again.

"Arnold has enough power too get in by other means, like blasting in a giant wall for example," Terry gestured too the giant hole in the far wall, where a tunnel went far into darkness.

Terry opened the second secret base and instead of a wall, a stair way opened up, leading downwards into the ground. "If Bane and Rolly are alive, they're down here."

They walk down in cautious silence. Will suddenly trips over something, he rolls down the stairs, he goes into darkness and continues too roll into the bottom. When he reaches it, he must have been over two hundred meters below us.

"Ow..." He calls up. "What was that?"

I look at what he had tripped on, a body of Fangbow. "This isn't good," Terry quivered.

This one is at least the size of a rhino, it's huge, I don't even know how we could have missed seeing it. "How did they kill it?" I wonder.

"Bane probably did it, he doesn't always use magic, he's highly trained in swords man ship and has many enchanted weapons." Replies Terry.

"Um... Guys?" Will hollers from far below.

"What is it Will?" I yell back.

"I think I found another dead Fangbow!" He yells.

Terry takes off at a run. "Wait!" Frederick calls from behind but Terry keeps running, but yells over his shoulder.

"Hurry! If there are Fangbows here, we need too save Bane! He could be in the Juke stage!"

They run trying too catch up with Terry. It seemed weird, Terry was usually running from danger, not too it. We reach the bottom and find Terry looking at another dead Fangbow, Will at his side. This one couldn't be smaller than a large truck, its jaws were big enough to swallow me whole.

Unlike the one on the stairs, this ones death was obvious. It was beheaded. A straight cut made by a sword or knife right by the neck. Fresh blood slowly gushed from the wound.

"It's fresh..." I mutter.

A marble passage leads farther away, no more Fangbows or bodies in sight. "You guys just love your tunnels, don't you?" I grunt.

"It's kind of a thing." Frederick admits.

I jog into the tunnel with the group and light my hand on fire too see more, Frederick goes too the other side of the tunnel and lights up there. That's when we find our first body. It was nobody I knew but Terry seemed shocked. He had teeth marks on his neck where a Fangbow had most likely bitten him. He still had his soul.

We keep up the jog into the tunnel. Finally we find what looks like an end. It looks like it was meant too survive an apocalypse. Weapons and tools line the wall, food storages and lockers as well. I would have taken more time too look around, but the sound of screaming brings me too one side of the room.

Bodies are everywhere, both men and Fangbow. At least thirty people were on the ground, only four remained on their feet. Two Fangbow were dead and two were assaulting the survivors. One was the size of the one on the stairs. The other could have been as large as an entire room. If it wasn't for the elevated roofs, and wide room, he would be stuck.

As I watch I see a women, who held a longbow, shoot an arrow into the smaller ones neck. The arrow bounces off, it turns and pounces on her. She screams but it holds on too her with its teeth. The teeth start too glow and she screams louder, then it drops her and returns too the fight. The women withers on the ground. I realize many of the fallen are doing the same, blank eyes and withering bodies. Some of them don't move at all, already dead. The remaining three people flee, I easily see Bane in the lead, Rolly is no where in sight.

The largest Fangbow gives chase, easily catching up. Without even trying he grabs the slowest man and flings him into the air, he quickly snatches him and gulps him down, without even sucking his soul. The other Fangbow tackles the other man and they fall too the ground. The Fangbow starts too suck his soul, but the giant Fangbow tries too steal its prey and bites down and swallows.

It eats the man and the Fangbow as well. Not even caring what he just did, he chases Bane. Frederick throws flames at the beasts face but it runs through it as if he had thrown feathers.

Bane scrambles away, holding a sword, like Terry had said he would use. Will tries too slow it down using wind, but draws its attention instead.

"Now what!" He yells.

The Fangbow jumps at Will, but suddenly it sags too the ground, falling about a meter short of Will. Sticking out of its neck was the hilt of Banes sword. He had thrown his sword, impaling its neck and killing it nearly instantly.

Instead of running too see if we're okay, Bane turns and runs into a chamber. Terry quickly follows. They run out together, holding tubes of a yellow liquid. They run too the withering people and force drink them. I watch as colour returns too they're eyes and they start too breath. Terry starts too heal bite marks or injuries of the people.

"How are they doing that?" I stare in amazement.

"When a Fangbow steals your soul, you go into the Juke stage. If you can get the Juke serum, which is very rare, it can draw your soul back too your body." Frederick explains. "If you don't get it within about half an hour, you die."

"Sound cheerful..." Muttered Will.

"Hey Bane! Where's Rolly?" Frederick asks.

"Gone."

"How!?" Terry exclaims.

"He left on his own terms, there was no danger too him after all."

"Why!" Terry screamed now.

"Because," Bane said darkly, "he betrayed us."

"Rolly betrayed us!" Frederick was surprised now.

"No, he always was a traitor. He wasn't even Rolly. His real name is Gazar Halardy."

"No..." Whispered Terry.

"Yes. What you see here is all that's left of the Resistance."

"What do we do?" I ask.

Of course it's Terry who replies, because... well- He's Terry.

"Simple, we give up."
